Escort TD, Air locked???? - turbo_wiesel
Hi all,
having a bit of trouble :(

Had to go quite a way the other night low on diesel eventually found a station and filled up, about a mile after pulling off it died not instantly it wouldnt rev first then it just coasted down and cut out, tried starting it straight away and it just turned over. Got out and checked the usual stuff and couldnt see anything wrong so got back in and it started, it did this 3 more times before i got home!! after looking into it a bit at home i could see rather a large air bubble in the fuel pipe between the filter and pump, thought i'd use this as an excuse to change the filter, after changing it there was loads of air in it so i cracked a jubilee clip just after a one way valve on the pipe and primed it with the plunger till diesel had forced all the air out. Coming home tonight it cut out about 5 times, every time i checked it seemed to have a bit of air in the pipe. My question is does it need alot of bleeding to get all the air out or is something else causing the problem? car is a 95 escort TD, any help would be great, cheers lads

Once the engine has started any remaining air should bleed out thro' the fuel return line(engine may run roughly for a few seconds). It sounds as though something has been disturbed in the fuel supply line and you have an air-leak.The fuel system should not have clear pipes(air bubble on view) and jubilee clips(these cause air leaks on small diameter pipes)-I would suggest replacing with the correct parts.

Thanks for that, unfortunately the clear pipes and jubilee clips are OE parts, how can i bleed it from the fuel return? surely its air going IN thats causing it to stall?
thanks again

Ford have never-repeat never-used clear pipes and jubilee clips on fuel systems-the original equipment was and is black nylon pipe and flexible rubber hoses(fabric covered) with spring clips.Clear plastic hose will go hard very quickly and small jubilee clips cannot apply force evenly round the pipe because of their design.Your local spares shop should be able to supply pipe and clips. You do not need to bleed the return,it will do that itself when it starts. To bleed the inlet after you have removed the possibility of any leaks, loosen or remove the pipe from the filter to the injection pump and pump (on top of the filter)till fuel fills the pipe, refit and crank. The leak could of course be in the filter assembly or betweenthe filter and the tank.

Jc is right. It would be worth checking the filter head and primer for correct leak free operation. Any problems here leads to air ingress.

Thanks JC, i'm a bit confused about the fuel pipe and clips, i've had 2 escorts and a mondeo TD (same engine i believe) and they've all had the same fuel pipe and clips, the hose is not what i call small at roughly 20mm O/D and the clips seem to have good purchase on the hose. I've bled it like suggested but it keeps drawing more air into the pipes from somewhere possibliy a problem pre filter as suggested although its quite a coincedance it happened after i let it run very low on diesel when it wasnt suffering with any problem before, very puzzling!!

I worked for Ford for 40+ years on the engine side and have owned numerous diesel Fiestas and Escorts-currently one of my cars is a TDI Escort and none of them have had clear fuel pipes and jubilee clips-the latest Fords use quick-release "John Guest" connectors on the fuel system but never jubilees which tend to go "D" shaped in small diameters.

I have an interesting picture for the photo-site which includes a hard to start 99 Fiesta TD, a section of hard plastic fuel pipe and a hose clip......more later.

Maybe there's been a fuel problem in the past, and someone's fitted a 'diagnostic' transparent fuel pipe. It could be that running low on fuel - and the raising of sediment etc. in the fuel tank has resurrected a long standing but dormant problem. By the way, a 20mm OD fuel pipe is far bigger than the 8 - 12 mm normally used on engines of this size.

Yes...I'd go the route that there has been a problem before....you see this horrible clear braided hose quite a lot these days on cranky diesels!

Out of interest, there is a pic of the Ford fuel pipe quick coupler discussed on this thread on the HJ photosite (Link in my sig, under main heading 'Problems')

Ford never made a '99 turbo diesel;there were a few outside conversions but not recognized by Ford.
