  • Honda Jazz/Fit (2001 - 2008) - Honda Jazz or Nissan Note - which to go for? 2 Aug 2008 (Forum)
I previously had a honda civic and was very impressed with the low running costs, one of the reasons why I am wanting to sell my VW passat tdi (great car but I don't really need all that space and power and do mostly short runs). I'm looking for economy, both in fuel consumption and maintenance, space for the occasional 5 passengers and a dog. I prefer the look of the Nissan and think it looks a bit more grown up than the Honda which I think looks a bit tinny and boxy.
  • Renault Scenic (2003 - 2009) - 04 1.9 Setting speedo to km/h in Scenic II 25 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Just in case this is of use to anyone (it doesn't appear to be in the handbook), I've posted it here: To set Renault Scenic II / Grand Scenic digital speedometer and trip computer to metric: Ignition must be off (so open and close the door in the case of full keyless models) Press and hold the upper (^) fuel computer button on the end of the wiper stalk Still holding the ^ button, insert the key card into the slot on the dash. Make sure you're not touching the clutch or brake pedals. Still holding the ^ button, press and hold the Engine Start/Stop button.
  • Renault Megane (1996 - 1998) - 98 1.6 RT Over-revving and misfiring 18 Jul 2008 (Forum)
I have a Reanult Megane RT Sport 1.6, which I bought about 3 months ago. During the test drive it almost ran out of fuel, as the seller had run it so low. After running it for about 4 days or so, it started to splutter pulling away from junctions, roundabouts etc, and also when over taking (very unnerving!). It also then developed a peculiar revving pattern.
  • Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - 2003 1.8TDCi - reluctant to start when part warm 9 Jul 2008 (Forum)
This time they found it (by accident) - it was a chaffed lead under the gearbox, lead which fed the fuel delivery system making occasional contact. I am hoping to sue the Dealer or Ford for the £1919-22 they charged me . Am I alone on this one - can any one advise how I proceed. Note Ford Customer Relationship Centre where NO USE at all didnt want to know..
  • Renault Laguna (1994 - 2001) - 1997 2.0 8 valve petrol engine vibration/misfire. 2 Jul 2008 (Forum)
All investigations have failed to find a cause - compressions are fine, no obvious bore damage, no leaks, the cylinder head is good and the fuel injectors have been replaced though they were firing properly anyway. A Renault specialist advised that the engine management showed nothing wrong and suggested that a pattern part coil was a common cause of misfires on Renault engines.
  • BMW 3-Series E46 (1998 - 2005) - 99 328 Lambda sensor failure? 28 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Would this indicate that the front sensors are on their way out and would this give me the slight "misfire" or judder that I can feel? Note that the car is otherwise running normally, fuel consumption is normal, acceleration is ok etc. engine, year details inserted in subject line - a closely guarded secret that we require these
  • True CO2 output 16 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Examiner was kind enough to say that the readings on the Emissions test were very good, which is pleasing as the car is a V6 auto and only really used now in town....however, it is maintained properly via a Jag Independent, I only ever use BP Ultimate fuel and it gets an 'Italian Tune' roughly once a month it has got me thinking though would a well maintained so called 'gas guzzler' beat a poorly maintained smaller car on emissions?... or would a well built quality car beat a cheap one that tended to go out of tune more quickly?
  • Vauxhall Astra G Petrol (1998 - 2004) - RE: Gendan code reader thread. 9 Jun 2008 (Forum)
You (and Gendan) saved me a lot of time, fiddling about but more importantly - money. My car is a Vauxhall 2003 Astra estate 1.6 (Z16XE engine) bi fuel (LPG/Petrol). I went with the Vauxcheck, Enginecheck and ELM327 USB interface and it pulled up 4 codes all relating to the EGR valve having (once more) failed. It also gave me a 'pending' fault of the coil pack being on its way out.
  • Volkswagen Tiguan SUV (2008 - ) - Broke down 7 Jun 2008 (Forum)
require car for longer to investigate, loan car provided. 1. Fright time initially, thought I had put wrong fuel in, check pump, check receipt, definately diesel 2. Dealer needs more time to investigate, no history known of similar faults 3. Dealer good with loan car (especially as I didn't buy car from them) 4.
  • Service not done when told it would be 5 Jun 2008 (Forum)
I asked him severel times what he thought was a full service, and he kept on blabbing on that it would be done. I said that i expected the oil,air and fuel filter to be changed, as well as the plugs and oil. He said that would all be done. Finally managd to have a look tonight. The oil filter looks new and the oil is clean. Air filter looked like it has never been changed so i am guessing that the rest of the service items have not been replaced.
  • Modern diesels - is there really a problem? 26 May 2008 (Forum)
And all these diesels that develop problems in later life ......... how many of those are the result of an earlier mis-fueling?

  • Mitsubishi Carisma (1995 - 2004) - 99 1.8 MOT failed on CO emissions 30 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Garage are muttering about faulty injectors, and I'm inclined to think that has logic, with poor combustion producing the high CO and highish HC from unburned fuel. Last year there was some discussion about a failed catalyst, and it seems possible this could also cause these results. I know the GDi engines have some problems and I'd be interested to know if the Back Room have any ideas before my colleague has his wallet opened.
  • Vauxhall Astra G Diesel (1998 - 2004) - 2000 2.0 DTi - glowplugs 30 Apr 2008 (Forum)
i bought a 2000 model vauxhall astra 2.0 dti and i am having trouble with it starting. i have replaced all the glowplugs and the power unit, if it is very cold you turn the key and the glowplug light comes on and the car starts no problem, and when the engine is warm it starts no problem but the glowplug light does not come on ,when you turn the key,if the car has been parked up for the day and you try start it the glowplug light does not come on and the motor will swing for about 10 seconds before it starts and when it does start it blows a big cloud of smoke out the exhaust so it seems to be fueling but battles to start, i think it is some sort of sensor which is not powering the glowplugs unless it is really cold but i am not sure where it is to change it. can anyone advise me . thanks {I realise you're new here, but please take a few moments to read some of the policies in place.
  • Mercedes Benz - Vito Sport 3 Apr 2008 (Forum)
I currently have my car as a private vehicle and charge my business for its use, but at only £0.40 per mile, (and only £0.25 per mile after 10,000 miles), it is not as good a deal as it once was. These rates have not been reviewed for a number of years (at least five AFAIK), but the fuel cost has of course gone through the roof. It is of course possible to charge the business more than this per mile, but then Mr Darling gets his hands on some of it. Sounds like I'm from Yorkshire, but I'm not.....honest!
  • Skoda Fabia (2000 - 2007) - 2002 1.9TDi - Loses power, sometimes wont start 3 Apr 2008 (Forum)
A few weeks ago it seemed to go flat as if the turbo had stopped, 2 days later parked it out side a shop came out and it refused to start. Checked fuel getting to filter, checked fuses all ok. Called RAC, busy day turned up 2 hours later it started ok. Since then it's beean more or less ok, but last week it's back to lost power. Fine when 1st started runs ok for about 4 minutes then power goes, odd day it's ok. 3 days ago it was fine and it went to manchester and back ok. 250 miles, would not start next day!!
  • Renault Laguna (1994 - 2001) - 1994 2.0rxe auto - System Malfunction 25 Feb 2008 (Forum)
and finally, i put £30 petrol in it but the petrol gauge is still lit up and the voice synthesizer tells me that fuel is low, there are no leaks anywhere and was wondering if it could be a fuse thats gone. I did only pay £250 for it and other than these problems it is in fantastic condition inside and out with all the electrics working.
  • Audi Allroad (2000 - 2006) - 2003 2.5 TDi - loose timing belt. What damage? 21 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Car began cutting out at low revs on the way to holyhead ferry. I called the dealer who thought it might be fuel contamination. They offered a hire car to continue our journey. However we would have missed the ferry. We got the car to ireland and took it to an audi dealer nearby. On the way there ,about 2 miles, the engine began sounding very rough.
  • A new car every three years - sensible? 7 Feb 2008 (Forum)
My calculations are probably crude but they took into account factors like part exchange value, fading fuel economy and rising service costs over time. So... have I missed something? Is it simply that such people are not private buyers and that there some quirk of company car ownership that makes frequent replacement sensible?
  • Volkswagen Golf III (1992 - 1997) - 1994 16.CL - Missing a Beat 10 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Replacing both the oil pressure switches has not solved the problem. My feeling is that the problem is electrical / electronic rather than fuel / oil pressure. But where to look next ? Be grateful for any ideas !
