2000 2.0 DTi - glowplugs - giveithorns
hi can anyone help me?
i bought a 2000 model vauxhall astra 2.0 dti and i am having trouble with it starting.
i have replaced all the glowplugs and the power unit, if it is very cold you turn the key and the glowplug light comes on and the car starts no problem, and when the engine is warm it starts no problem but the glowplug light does not come on ,when you turn the key,if the car has been parked up for the day and you try start it the glowplug light does not come on and the motor will swing for about 10 seconds before it starts and when it does start it blows a big cloud of smoke out the exhaust so it seems to be fueling but battles to start, i think it is some sort of sensor which is not powering the glowplugs unless it is really cold but i am not sure where it is to change it. can anyone advise me . thanks

{I realise you're new here, but please take a few moments to read some of the policies in place. One of which is to include the year & engine details within the subject line of your post - as per the 3 separate requests}

The duration is controlled by the main ECU's coolant temp sensor. It seems to be working; so maybe consider that air is getting back in overnight.

Replace the leak-off hoses between the injectors and, if necessary, the internal top seals on the injectors - that bit may be best left to a specialist.

i have checked the leak-off hoses and they look ok all joints are dryand they are not perished but i beleive they are quite cheap so i will replace them and it eliminates another possible problem.

You won't see any air leaks into the hoses - they just perish. Try them first - the injector T-seals are a lot more work.

hi screwloose
i got a set of leak pipes and replaced them but the car is still the same, i fitted a new fuel filter aswell incase it was a bit blocked, the car does start in the morning without the glowplug light coming on but it just takes a few swings and when it starts it is a bit rough for about 5 seconds then it is fine, when running it runs smooth. not much left now to change, do you think it could be injector seals, if the injector seals were damaged would it not leak diesel ?
thanks

If the glow light has stopped behaving normally; either get it plugged-in and watch the system in live-data, or change the ECU's coolant temp sensor.

hi screwloose

yesterday morning we went out to start the car and it wouldn't have it, today i loosened the injector pipe as i had a feeling it wasn't getting any diesel i let the motor swing and only a tiny dribble came out, my friend has the car and some one is coming around tomorrow to plug their diagnostics into it to look for errors, is the pump a common problem on these engines or are the electronics that run it a problem, is it a difficult job to change the pump if this is the problem.
thanks

How much diesel were you expecting? Try Easi-start.

Changing the pump, which often fails, is a skilled job and the £1700 cost might give you pause.....
