vw golf 1.9 sdi 1999 - loss of power 6 Apr 2013 (Forum)
bought a vw golf 1.9 sdi only a few days ago and driving round the doors it pulls like a train, however, take it over 50mph and it just does not want to know and speed drops to about 40mph even with foot to the floor, ive read a lot of the posts on here but dont seem to be able to find any problems relating to the sdi,,being an sdi i have no turbo so no problems there and i have just found out today that it has no MAF meter neither which is what most are sayin the solution is to TDI s...having just bought the car i dont know its history but will be giving it a full service on monday to see if that helps, just wondered if anyone has any other ideas incase the service does not help?? cos although i cant be certain it looks like the fuel filter has not long been changed and the air filter isnt that bad but for what they cost im going to change anyway, think someone has had ago at fixing with the new filters and passed it on to me,unfortunately for me i didnt test drive on motorway, but then why would you lol. -
Modern diesel engines - looking after one to get the best out of it 20 Mar 2013 (Forum)
What are opinions on injector cleaners such as Redex and Millers - any good? The MB interval on fuel filters is something like 60000 miles (can't be certain without checking the service book) - opinions on this?? Any other useful tips? -
Ford focus 1.6 tdci studio - Mistake buy with DPF? 4 Mar 2013 (Forum)
We placed a £500 deposit on a ford focus 1.6 tdci studio 59 reg DPF that has 58,000 miles on the clock that is costing 6500 I will be using it to commute back and forth from uni on the weekends that is a roundtrip motorway journey of 140 miles and occasionaly 5-10 miles during the weekdays in the town and estimate about 7000-8000 miles a year. We found this car and thought it would be a good buy because of the fuel economy (and i personally find diesels a better drive) but from what i may be reading, this might be a trap. It is an ex-company car so it has been fully serviced by ford dealers but nothing has been mentioned about a DPF replacement. -
Lexus RX 450h - Official mpg figures 23 Feb 2013 (Forum)
I have been extremely disappointed with the fuel consumption of this car, and complaining to Lexus, ever since I bought it in 2009. I had moved on from a RX400h which had an official EU figure of 34.1 mpg and in practice actually easily achieved slightly over 30 mpg. -
2005 vectra 3.0cdti - 2005 vauxhall vectra 3.0 cdti Sri diesel keeps cut 22 Feb 2013 (Forum)

Then I put the car into park mode turn the key a 3 or 4 times and way she goes with a few coughs then it seems to correct itself. Just gone out it in agin for a short trip and perfect not miss a beat. -
Any - Choosing an estate (probably) for £2000 11 Jan 2013 (Forum)
Currently considering: Saab 9-5 - 2.0, 2.3 or HOT (probably not...) or the big diesel Vauxhall Signum - 2.0T, 2.2 direct, or the big diesel (had a vectra 1.9 150 before, would consider but want something a bit more... fun) Volvo V40 1.9 T4 (if I can find one) Mondeo (probably a 2.5 V6) MG ZT-T (again, 1.8T or 2.5 V6) I'm probably borderline on distance/route between a petrol or diesel being more suitable, but as I say I'm looking for a something a bit grumbly or pokey or both, as long as it isn't going to cost the Earth I don't mind spending a bit extra on fuel. I also like gadgets and luxury! Any thoughts much appreciated!! Joe -
Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - 1.8tdci engine/DMF problems 10 Jan 2013 (Forum)
The independent results suggested an injector problem. They did a leak test on the injectors and found no problem. They changed the fuel filter and that cured the problem for about a week and now i'm back to square one. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. -
Vauxhall Astra G Diesel - fans constantly running temp gauge not moving 27 Nov 2012 (Forum)
hi i have a astra g 04 diesel y17dt engine i had the glow plugs replaced now i have fault codes (p0115 engine coolant temperature circuit) (p0180 fuel temperature sensor a circuit) (p0380 glow plug/heater circuit a p0409 exhaust gas recirculation sensor a) the two fans start when the engine starts and go off about 2 minutes after the engine is turned off or when you turn the key to the fourth position this will turn the fans off i have tried a differant coolant control moduel and replaced Volkswagen Golf V - GOLF V 1.9 TDI hot start - how to remap? 12 Nov 2012 (Forum)
I understand that some people have fixed this with either 1) new battery 2) new starter motor 3) new both of these BUT... I also gather that it can be solved by changing the engine management software to inject fuel sooner during a hot start. Please could somebody explain the following: Does the ECU chip have to be replaced (like a re-map) or can it be simply edited? I don't really have any interest in getting a performance upgrade etc, I would just like to iron out this bug and be kinder on the battery/starter.... -
Renault trafic 1.9 dci - Renault Trafic 1.9 dci100 boost and smoke issue 14 Oct 2012 (Forum)
Hi all My trafic smokes on start up, for the first 10 seconds or so the revs are 500-1000 and almost stalls. the if you rev it in neutral it hesitates between 2500-3000 and white smoke fills the sky. if you try and drive it smokes at the same revs and then after 3000 it feels like the turbo kicks in. after about 5 mins driving all is fine, it drives well and smoke is gone but sometimes it goes into limp mode. so far i have cleaned egr and maf ( which is new and i have tried it with another maf in case mine was duff), leak test on injectors was fine, changed fuel filter, 2 of the 4 glow plugs need replacing and the lid of the air filter box doesnt seem to fit properly. An AA man showed me a test were you squeeze the intercooler pipe and get someone to rev engine and the pipe should expand in you hand, this does not happen. diag code reader only brought up glow plugs Any ideas whats going on and why it is fine after a 5 mins driving? -

Vauxhall Astra F - Astra 1.4 16v Not starting at all 22 Aug 2012 (Forum)
The starter motor is fine though as the car jumps forward when you try to start it in gear. Petrol is definately getting through and fuel pump seems to be working alright. Also getting a spark but I changed the plugs for good measure. i have also cleaned all the electrical connections as shown in the haynes manual, all relevant earth points look fine. -
Citroen DS3 - Citroen dealership caught speeding in my car 17 Jul 2012 (Forum)
the car went in with engine issues, sudden loss of power and no acceleration. the garage has had three oportunitys to fix the car. the first time they did a software reset and gave it me back. the second time they replaced the timing chain and other associated parts. the third time they replaced the fuel pump. the car is, for now, OK but I've now had a letter from the police over an alleged speeding offence. this is dated to a Sunday, at 16:00, outside of business hours, at a time when i did not have possession of the car and had not given permission for the person who used the car permission to do so. surely this is classed as theft i would like to refuse the car and have my initial deposit refunded. the car is now 13 months old, i have owned it from new, having bought it from the garage where this offence has taken place advice would be greatly appreciated. -
1.4 - Fiesta TDCI - another change 13 Jul 2012 (Forum)
I notice many people on here have cars with this unit and say its underpowered and thirsty lol I notice in some literature that there is a latest version that is rated at 104g/km which equates to 70.6mpg - not a huge leap and still falls short of the magic tax exempt point. Cars advertised with such amazing claimed fuel economy do not deliver at all eg the latest 1.6 TDCI econetic that offers 86 mpg and the Kia Rio certinaly does not return 88 either. I was wondering what improvements does the latest 1.4 version have over mine not that I’m bothered the latest version is going to be replaced again later this year when the revamped version comes up. -
mgf - MGF Not Running 7 Jul 2012 (Forum)
When turned over it would run for a few seconds then stall and then not restart. First port of call was coil pack, then leads, plugs, fuel filter, manifold, new injectors and loom. After all these (not at the same time) I still had the same problem, Then a friend suggested I check the cat as it may be blocked, I thought anything was worth a go at this point, so I disconnected the downpipe at the manifold and presto the car started. -
Vauxhall - New GM engines on the way 8 Mar 2012 (Forum)
Vauxhall-Opel is poised to replace its entire line-up of four-cylinder diesel and petrol engines, starting this year with a new range of direct-injection 1.6 petrol units for the Astra. The engines will feature hi-tech refinements required to cut fuel consumption and CO2, such as turbocharging, double variable valve timing and, where necessary, balancer shafts. They will all be designed to work in hybrid applications. The move, involving a €500 million investment and first revealed by Autocar last year, was announced this week by CEO Karl-Friedrich Stracke. -
Volkswagen Passat - VW DSG problems after Piezo injector manufacturer 20 Feb 2012 (Forum)
Naturally I am suspicious as the car was perfect when I took it in... Can anyone advise if the problem may be linked to fuel management? Also, wouldn't the computer analysis be able to detect where the problem was? I could believe that the gearbox was broken if happened all the time - but it doesn't! (VW UK are also looking into the problem...) -
BMW 320i M Sport Touring - Catalytic Converter - Cleaning Additives? 11 Feb 2012 (Forum)
Asked the garage to do a diagnostic check on the EMS and they reported that the check had shown up a blocked catalytic converter. They had put a proprietary additive (not sure which one) into the fuel and advised me to go out and "drive the car as if i had stolen it" Went for a blast down the motorway for about 50-60 miles but not sure if that will be enough to affect a clean out. My questions are - How efficient are these cleaners and how much high rev driving must i do to get them to work? -
Toyota Avensis (2007) petrol - Changing a courtesy light fuse 11 Feb 2012 (Forum)
Incidentally, since blowing the fuse (if that's what I've done) the clock has defaulted to 12:00 and the rev counter/fuel and temp gauges are resting in odd positions only when ignition is swtiched off. Is this because a separate circuit has been interrupted? Many thanks in anticipation! -
Mercedes Benz E320CDI Sports Estate 2007 - Claimed "total failure" of instrument cluster 26 Jan 2012 (Forum)
The instrument cluster includes both the display of all the instruments including the speedometer and fuel gauge and the multifunction computer display. The symptom is that instrument panel and computer display are not activated when the ignition is turned on. The engine still starts and the car is driveable albeit without any instruments or status reports whatsoever.
