  • Rover 214 (L) - Hot Re-starting problem 13 Aug 2006 (Forum)
The symptoms appear very similar to those I once suffered in an old 1.8L Ford Sierra which was diagnosed by the AA as a vapour lock and I fixed it by replacing the mechanical camshaft-driven fuel pump. On the Rover 214, the petrol pump is however in the fuel tank and is electric powered.
  • Toyota Previa - just out of warranty 18 Jun 2006 (Forum)
My Toyota Previa T3 is 2 yrs 8 months old and went in for a service this week at 62039 miles. I should have got it in a few weeks ago before it reached 60K (the limit of the warranty) but life was just too busy. The car now needs a new water pump, rear shock and auxilliary drive belt for which Toyota are prepared to contribute parts at £100 plus vat instead of £182.72 plus vat, and for which I must pay the labour (which the dealer will do at warranty rate - £165 plus vat instead of £195 plus vat).
  • Replacement for Volvo 760 estate 22 May 2006 (Forum)
My mother has had her Volvo 760 estate for 15 years and it's getting near to change time. She will keep this car but will want a new replacement. She is 76 and has driven Volvos for 40 years and is obviously quite loyal. But she might be persuaded to but something else if it meets her needs: 1. Must be a large estate for carrying her music equipment around, trips to garden centres and ferrying 'all those old people around'. 2.
  • Dilemma - Legal advice appreciated 20 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Hello all The company I work (or worked) for have gone into adminstration, owning a multitude of people their months wages unfortunately also in my case the expenses I have paid out over the past month, this adds up to about £3k! I have a company car, laptop and phone which of course I cannot keep in recompense but the dilemma is, the adminstrators have requested that I deliver them to my old head office, this would mean a 250 mile round trip at my own expense.
  • Volvo 240 1993 30 Sep 2005 (Forum)
My good lady arrive back at lunch time to report that the old faithfull 240 ES 1993 B200 LH 3.1 ( one of the last ) ran very rough after being parked for 10 minutes. Then it cleared and was parked for 2.5 hours and again ran very rough and jerky would not pull but eventually cleared and she drove home the 15 miles.
  • Megane 1.6 plugs coils etc 16 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Also, what should the gap be? I would have reset the gap and tried the old plugs again, but it's a sunday night, I'm cold and dirty and I don't know the gap anyway! Cheers.

  • Snake oil and economy devices 6 Oct 2004 (Forum)
I have been given a set of spark plugs for my old 405. Powerplugs (www.lectro.com). They suggest improvements in fuel economy of "up to 20%" and "15% more power" from changing to these plugs, with one landrover owner getting 13% more fuel economy.
  • Head gasket failure Peugeot 106 10 Sep 2004 (Forum)
So my thinking is remove cam belt, lock camshaft in place with a bolt through the pulley into the head, unbolt exhaust manifold, unbolt inlet manifold, take of head cover, undo head bolts, lift off head. Replace head gasket. Then follow the old Haynes advice, "reassembly is the reverse of removal"? Obviously replacing all gaskets on the way. Just wondering if i'm way off the mark here, any help would be gratefully appreciated!
  • Clio engine cutting out 8 Sep 2004 (Forum)
Hi, I've got a 97(R) Clio 1.2 (old shape) and it's got a nasty habit of cutting out at low speeds when it's warmed-up (but never when cold). The engine sometimes judders before cutting out but other times just dies when I approach lights or park up etc.
  • M60 Roadsurface 26 Aug 2004 (Forum)
, I made an observation about the newish section of the M60 a few weekends ago. Often do a 'circuit' of the M60 when babysitting a friends 1 year old, as baby falls asleep more easily in the car than on my shoulder. A couple of Sundays ago it was raining very heavily. I noticed that there was a marked difference in driving conditions on different sections of the motorway, even though it was the same rain.
  • Pug306xr speedometer/oxygensensor. 6 Aug 2004 (Forum)
I have a relativley old peugot 306xr 209000ks on it, but runs really well the majoritei of the time. I have expereinceing many strange things and am wondering if there is hope for it. firstly ater driving for while an hour or more the speedo will start jumping around and then finally give up completely, after which It will start to stall completley as soon as the clutch is pushed in no matter the speed Im doing. also during idle atleast for 1-2 minutes at a set of lights the engine light will come on, whic according to peugot was a oxygen sensor au$500 which lasted two months and when taken back to peugot it would cost me again to have the computer looked at roughly $90 to reveal the same problem with which they shrugged their shoulders and said they cant garauntee it wont happen again if replaced, I think all these problems are associated and their is or was nothing wrong to the oxygen sensor. any insight would be much appreciated, as taking my car to anyone else resorts to them apologising and saying I have to take it to a dealer to have the computer checked.
  • Clio stutters once each journey 13 Jun 2004 (Forum)
I replaced the distributor and rotor arm at Xmas, so can't be them. Could it be the HT leads? They are still the originals, i.e. nearly 10 yrs old. If so, why does it only do it once per journey. Car mostly used for short journeys - could it be that? 2) When you pull up at a junction, the engine is always slow to return to idle - first drops to 1500rpm, then slowly to idle (around 850rpm) rather than drop directly to 850rpm.
  • SAAB 9-3 TiD - Turbo Failure? 4 May 2004 (Forum)
My partner's 5 year old SAAB 9-3 Tid was serviced about 6 weeks ago and she mentioned sluggish performance but nothing was detected (the car was serviced but not road tested). I don't drive it at all often but I tried it today and while it starts and runs OK, doesn't blow out any colour of smoke and no odd temperature readings, it seems well down on power.
  • Home Brew Petrol Additive 8 Jan 2004 (Forum)
I'm thinking of mixing 20 parts of paraffin to one part of thin oil with the idea that this mixture would condition the fuel system. I've heard of using ATF for this, and I've got some left over from an old auto car, but when it runs out I thought I might use pump diesel instead as this would make it even cheaper. Since mine is a 'cooking engine' based on 1980s technology, I might use a much larger quantity - say one pint of the mix to a tankful (15 gal).
  • Golf rattles 14 Dec 2003 (Forum)
There also now seems to be more vibration on the accelerator pedal at motorway speeds now than there was. On startup from cold there's a brief rattly / knocky noise that's reminiscent of an old Triumph Vitesse i had with a shot bottom end. This settles down to a bit of a rattly clatter (which you can't hear in the car). It only seems to make the knocky noise on startup (but still rattles when warm), from cold which seems strange (if it was the bottom end), as i would have thought it would be more pronounced when warm (thin oil).
  • Aged parent - should I shop her? 4 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Like others I mutter that they shouldn't be on the road when encountering some old dear or a man in a hat pottering along at 25mph. Now I notice that my mother, aged 81, is hardly able to drive competently. She is probably not actually dangerous, yet, just a slow-moving traffic hazzard.
  • Vehicle History Checks 30 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Should I use a different company or accept the check by the dealer also using HPI and faxed as is, to me direct? Would I be wasting cash when I appear to have access to a genuine report just a few hours old on the vehicle?
  • Pug 106 cutting out 31 Oct 2003 (Forum)
After 5 or 6 attempts, it caught and started, but only a few yards down the road it started 'chugging' and then cut-out, unable to restart at the time due to being late for work and so therefore used a different car. I could give a few suggestions as to the initial starting problem, spark plugs old, battery knackered etc, but i wouldn't have thought either of these would cause it to cut-out again after a successful start?
