  • Citroen C1 - Water pump replacement as a precaution? 24 May 2016 (Forum)
Hi, I have acquired my mums old Citroen C1 to get to work following a change of job. It's going to be used around town to get to work (only 5 miles each way but the bus takes FOREVER!) and probably get a decent motorway/A road run at weekends.
  • Berlingo Gearbox Whine & Wear - Berlingo Gearbox Whine & Wear 7 Mar 2016 (Forum)
Between picking it up from garage and returning back to garage car has done 40miles ish.   Any ideas on what could have happened and what my next steps are?
  • any - SatNav update (and how not to Spend a Sunday) 15 Aug 2015 (Forum)
I have a discrete TomTom XL satnav that is several years old and has never been updated. As I take this with me to use in hire cars when I go to Europe on business or holdays, I thought it was about time the maps were updated, (as for one, there is the rather unfortunate error on the Milan - Verona motoway, where the exit for Lake Garda DOES NOT actually exist)!
  • Volkswagen Golf VI - Help much appreciated! - Buying VW Golf 6 May 2014 (Forum)
First time posting to this forum. All your help would be muchly appreciated. I've sold on my old car (Peugeot 306....12 years of faultess service) and I'm now looking at buying a good second hand Golf VI Match Edition 1.4 tsi (the 122bhp one). I was on the verge of getting one when I started looking at the problems these engines have with the timing chains.
  • mondeo tdci 2003 - bad starter 17 Feb 2014 (Forum)
i had a cold start problem , read a lot of forum information on these mondeo problems , the car ran fine after first start of the day, it was fast smooth and no flashing heater plug light, no missfire or any other symptoms, new battery fitted last year and starter was spinning over no problem. changed cam sensor , cleaned out egr valve , checked turbo actuator ,no different on cold starting, i accidentally dicoverd the live battery terminal was getting very hot, it wasnt loose where it was crimped into the connector, i took out the battery , and solderd around the cable at the joint , hey presto starts first time now, so i now know that although my starter would turn the motor over for 20 mins or so when cold,it is not like the old days of diesal motors firing up on the slightest of turns on the starter, i hope this imformation might save someone the headache i had for weeks, voltage is critical with these motors ,check your connections ,
  • Yaris Hybrid 8 Oct 2013 (Forum)
We currently have a 2010 Doblo which isn't proving to be very reliable, or economical (is the 1.4 petrol and does around 30mpg). We are only a small family, wife, seven year old and 2 dogs. A big question will be whether the dogs will fit in the boot. They have rather been spoilt with Doblo boot, but rarely go in the car anyway. As a family we have occasionally used the space of the Doblo but not often and really want something smaller and cheaper to run.
  • SEAT Ibiza III - 2008 Ibiza 1.2 Reference Sport Thoughts? 1 Aug 2013 (Forum)
I've driven a number of Ibiza over the years from old J plates to new diesels and I'm happy with the comfort and general driving experience. I've read reports of the coil packs failing on VAG engines, so my question really is "is it worth going for"?
  • jaguar x-type 2.0 diesel - clutch defect 23 Apr 2013 (Forum)
The clutch failed at 10,500 genuine miles on my car that was just under 4 years old. Out of warranty, I had a local garage change it in March 2012 at great expence. I thought a proud rivet on the pressure plate was the cause, but since then it was reported in Honest John's web that AP and Borg & Beck clutches were failing due to poor materials, and being replaced with Luk.
  • Nissan Qashqai - What is acceptable proof of FSH? 10 Jan 2013 (Forum)
The garage said they'd sort it for me and delivered me a service book a few weeks later. However, the old one had obviously been lost as this is a brand new one. There's a stamp in there for the most recent service (last month) done by the garage, but no stamps from before this. Instead, there's a print off of an email from another garage listing what they've done to the car and when.
  • Toyota Yaris - Yaris With Light Bump/Timing Chain Fail 4 Sep 2012 (Forum)
Is it a risky purchase - and what tell tale signs should I be looking out for, that indicate it might be a troublesome car? Many thanks for any advice.
  • Mitsubishi Colt, 57-plate 5 dr, CZ2, 1.5 Di-D - Seized gearshift 19 Jul 2012 (Forum)
One part goes down into gearbox so not sure I could have done it myself. Is that reasonable for a 5yr old car and a common problem too? Wondering if they run on razor makers/computer printer  lines vis. whole thing cheap brandnew but the parts are almost as much again. Can I avoid it happening again?
  • General - Electronic control systems 25 Jan 2012 (Forum)
Ensure that Event Data Recorders (black boxes) are commonplace in new vehicles.   I still have an old car that will blithely ignore mobile telephone masts and other sources of interference.  If only I could get it going and keep it going reliably.
  • Citroen Berlingo Multispace - Faulty heater/blower 23 Oct 2011 (Forum)
the garage now want to change the switches but I am concerned that my mother is being lead a merry dance as she has already paid £100 for motor that is not needed I wold be grateful for you advice. Would you agree that maybe the old motor could go back on and look at replacing the parts you advice. The car is a petrol 1600 and build in 2005. I look forward to hearing from you , please could you also suggest where I could obtain parts required please
  • Ford Escort 1.8 TD - Battery has me flummoxed - one for HTH possibly 26 May 2011 (Forum)
Really a bit gobsmacked is all. I have an 18 month old Varta Blue E11, a superb battery that has now seen me through two winters down to -30c here in Latvia and is still very strong indeed. What I can't understand, this being a standard 6 x lead acid cell accumulator, is how it is providing the voltage that it is.
  • Mazda Mazda 6 (2008 -) - New front tyres fitted. Now st.wheel offcentre??? 5 May 2011 (Forum)
Mazda 6.... 6 months old and under 20,000 miles on the clock. This morning it drove absolutely fine. 2 new front tyres were needed so called in a national tyre chain's mobile tyre fitting service, who put on 2 Good Year Eagle NCTs.
  • Renault Megane II 05 reg - High Megane repair costs 7 Feb 2011 (Forum)
Took car to main dealer to investigate failed door handle entry switch (see previous post). Diagnosed faulty switch ! Amazing, just what we told them, however they quoted £130 as door panel has to be removed.
  • VW Polo - Need help with choosing engine oil 12 Jul 2010 (Forum)
Since I've owed it, I've been using 10w40 semi synthetic oil (as recommended), its now time to change the oil again and I've been looking at various oil manufactures websites for recommendations, I'm getting a vast array of recommended grades of oil, from 5w30 fully synthetic, 15w40 to 15w50 and of course 10w40 semi synthetic..... and now I'm confused which ones really are accurate. The car is now 10 years old and because of that, and probably poor maintenance prior to me owning it, the engine can be noisy on start up in cold or hot weather (until it is well warmed up), despite using engine cleaners etc at oil change.

  • Note said "Parking - fine" - That's nice, I said. 6 May 2010 (Forum)
(Old Tommy Cooper joke IIRC...) Got my second parking fine in ten years this morning. I'd paid the ticket but overstayed by about 20 minutes and "Lovely Rita" had already ticketed me when I returned.
  • Mazda 6 - Cancelled Direct debit - wrong choice? 19 Apr 2010 (Forum)
had a big argument with the company and now i have a so called "reliable" solicitor on board which told me the old solicitor had made a huge mistake on telling me to stop paying. he now advised me that i should start paying again, but more on top to cover my arrears. But the dispute will still continue and be classed as Payment under Dispute.
