  The 7k mile 04 reg MX5 Sport 6-speed in the photo sold for £10,500, which makes sense against the £14,000 discounted new price being asked for the last unsold old shape MX5 1.8 5-speeds. I also saw my first Mazda 6 under £5,000: a 95k mile 02 2.0TS 5-door, which sold for £4,400. Yet in another hall, a sought-after 60k mile 2000W Premacy 2.0 GXI diesel made a strong £4,100. Passat diesels still make more than Mondeos.

  A grey 99T Mondeo 2.0LX with 51k miles and 11 months MOT made a market average £1,850, whereas a 89,000 mile 97R navy Mazda 626 LXi made a comparatively high £1,600. £1,240 would have bought you a 2000W Fiat Brava 1.6 Trofeo. It was a horrid lime green colour but seemed honest and cheap for its 42k miles.

  The international jury presiding over the Car of the Year award, made up of 58 specialist journalists from 22 European countries, has elected the Fiat 500 Car of the Year 2008 with 385 votes, ahead of the Mazda 2 (325 votes) and the Ford Mondeo (202). In addition to winning the Car of the Year 2008 award outright, the super-compact Fiat distinguished itself by obtaining votes from most members of the jury: 57 out of 58 included it in their short-list, and 33 made it top in their personal rankings.

  A 133k white 95M 2.0 with 7 months ticket and aftermarket stereo and alloys sold for £375 whereas a scruffy 96P mauve 1.8 estate with a 66k and an incomplete history sold for £341. This compares with a superficially good Mazda 626. With its shiny black exterior, touring car style multi-spoke 17” wheels, performance exhaust and Clifford alarm someone had shown it some attention. However, the fact that it only had a months MOT when it looked so otherwise cared for raised suspicions.

  Anyway, the fully loaded 21k mile 03 reg T6 Geartronic bid to £26,000 and the similarly equipped 16k mile 2003/53 D5 Geartronic bid to £27,100. A 29k mile 02 reg Mazda MX5 1.8 Sport 6-speed with leather looked value to me at £9,950. This is the best MX5, equally at home on a track as it is cruising top-down through the suburbs. You’ll get a new one for just over £15k, but if you only have £10k then this was the car for you.

  On the other hand, a 33,000 mile 99S Primera 1.6SX sold for a bargain £2,600; an 85k mile 92K Mazda 626 2.0iGT estate sold for £900 and a 48k mile 83Y and very tidy Triumph Acclaim 1.3HL sold for all of a tenner. Of the newer tackle, FIAT Stilos did not appear to be doing at all well.

  An 85,000 mile 99V 323iSE looked very sensible at a top bid of £8,400, but it was in white. A 5,000 mile 02 reg Mazda 323 1.6GXi currently selling at a bargain £9,950 new, bid to £7,400. There are an awful lot of Mercedes MLs in the trade at the moment, which helped to explain why a 97,000 mile 99T ML430 ran out of bids at £16,000.
