  But the Mercedes-Benz hall was a sight to behold, with a selection of its major milestones in motor sport exhibited in a grandly scale exhibition, that had some unprecedented viewing opportunities. But as usual, it was the sheer scale of the show that couldn't help but impress, with more than 1250 exhibitors from more than 30 nations, 220-plus classic car, spread across 20 halls and a number of outdoor arenas.

  Radical revisions to driving test proposed 11 Oct 2013 (News)
  The changes proposed by the report are radical and arguably draconian – the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) suggests that there be a stronger emphasis on pre-driver training for under-17s, such as that offered by Mercedes-Benz World and Admiral Young Driver. Furthermore it suggests a 12 month learner stage starting at age 17 with a requirement of 100 hours of daytime and 20 hours of night time supervised practice. Furthermore TRL suggests that, on completion of those requirements along with the theory and practical tests, drivers undergo a 12 month probationary period during which time they must display a P plate, with a night time curfew from 10pm-5am unless accompanied by an adult over the age of 30.

Another world record was made at this sale for a standard road-going E-type Jaguar with a 1961 E-type 3.8 Series 1 flat floor roadster going for £225,500.

  Another significant car to go under the hammer at Monterey is the 1939 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster. This one features one-off coachwork by Sindelfingen, chassis 408383 is an incredible Art Deco masterpiece. Chassis 408383 was completed in early August 1939 for its first owners, the Horn brothers, proprietors of an exclusive boutique in Berlin, and it is believed that Rolf Horn, one of the brothers, had a major influence on its conception and design.
