  • Socially responsible tow bars? 10 Jul 2006 (Forum)
People who don't look where they are going might bark their shins? The extra weight and consequent fuel consumption might cause us to run out of oil sooner than we thought? I use my trailer 2 or 3 days a week in summer in the course of my business so I fall into HJ's exception group, but what of others?
  • Volvo S60 running costs and issues 5 Jul 2006 (Forum)
I'm interested to hear from those who owns a higher-mileage S60 or knows about repairing high-mileage S60 on following subjects. 1) What have been repaired on your car? How much are the repair costs? 2) What's the fuel economy like between the 2.0 and 2.4? I use the car in central London and I heard that the 2.4 is significantly more thirsty in traffic. 3) Is the auto-box reliable? 4) As the 2.0 is only 20hp less than the 2.4, is the 2.0 similar to drive to the 2.4?

  • petrol in a diesel engine - Ford Connect 15 Jun 2006 (Forum)
could drain I filled up on my way home from work and accidently put in super unleaded petrol into my diesel hire van...luckily I noticed before starting it up, so I managed to call the RAC, this was 10pm, it was too late or at least too far to take me to a garage that could drain the tank, so I asked them to take me home...I 'm going to have to sort this out tomorrow morning, are there particular garages I should be looking for that can halp me with this situation. The hire company's breakdown policy doesn't cover filling up with wrong fuel. I live in Basildon in Essex.. thankyou for any help.
  • Engine frequently cuts out 1995 Micra 10 May 2006 (Forum)
Rescue patrols have come out and suggested various potential problems such as distributor, 'points and condensor', mass air flow sensor, fuel pump (though patrol looked at this at all seems to be in order there). Anybody out there got any words of comfort before I hear back from Nissan workshop tomorrow??!! Many thanks! Andy
  • Mk2 Golf/Vw Garage problems 9 Apr 2006 (Forum)
The garage have just rung to say it takes them just two attempts and that this is normal because its a carb and not fuel injection, the guy also mentioned that it was similar to starting with a flooded engine. Another problem I have is that sometimes it is uneven at idle speed and judders as if it is going to cut out.
  • Saab 9-3 Tid Se 2001-Y - Turbo charger 11 Mar 2006 (Forum)
There is no noticable reduction in power/acceleration, only this blowing sound, especially when cold, and the fuel consumption is approximately 39mpg and should be around 45 ish. So the question is, does the turbo require to be replaced (God I hope not !!)or might there be another reason for these symptoms that can be more easily and cheaply rectified before it becomes terminal for the turbo ??

  • A4 TDI pours out smoke at idle 2 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Afterwards it started to smoke (white/blue) heavily when idling - v. noticeable in traffic queues, cars behind would back off! There's strong 'sooty' smell but no loss of coolant or oil, performance is unaffected and fuel economy hasn't suffered; the car drives normally. The headgasket was replaced last year (due to coolant loss) c/w valve stem oil seals done at the time and again since. EGR valve, hoses all checked and OK.
  • Clean burn engines 15 Jan 2006 (Forum)
This is a development of features from both petrol and diesel engines with a view to meeting the coming restrictions on release of NOx and particulates (and a 20% increase in fuel economy). It will most likely introduce solenoid open / close mechanisms because it requires such close control of valve timing. Whoopee, no more busted cam belts! The development hasn?t reached full operational range yet - it can?
  • Vauxhall Monterey L reg Auto losing powe 31 Dec 2005 (Forum)
Hi i was wondering if there is anyone out there in cyber space who has any knowledge about the vauxhall monterey 3.2 auto, we have been having a few problems with our vehicle it is losing power which confuses the gear box and then starts blowing out lots of black smoke. We have had the vehicle fully serviced with lots of new parts including map sensors & fuel sensors which seemed to do the trick for a short period of time then the problem starts again, local garages seemed to be a bit baffled and i was wondering if anyone either has had this problem and solved it or if anyone knows the best place to get information.
  • Tipo fails MoT on emissions 8 Dec 2005 (Forum)
New plugs, points and leads failed to cure it, found to be timing, so had new cambelt fitted - ran fine, but consuming way too much fuel. Gave it a treatment of injector cleaner, still no improvement, so put in in for early test to see what else it failed on, with a view to fix if cheap. It starts and runs fine, except it's doing 25 mpg driven sensibly, on medium runs.
  • Hybrids update 13 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Autos and hybrid transmissions are both costlier than manual gearboxes but whereas the conventional planetary + torque converter auto uses more fuel than a manual, the hybrid uses much less except in most conditions. Cheers, Sofa Spud
  • pug 205 gti ignition wont switch off 4 Oct 2005 (Forum)
hi all, the ignition on my car doesn't switch off. it recently broke down with no power going to fuel pump so checked fuses/relays but ok! took a plug out of my immob and lo and behold the car started, so logically i thought that was that, but now my prob is the ignition doesn't switch off (although when the engine is runnin you can turn that off on the key but not the ignition -wierd!)
  • Pug 406 speedo - playing up (again) 4 Oct 2005 (Forum)
I had this problem about a year ago - speedo suddenly fluctuates & drops to zero for a time then comes to life again, I took the instrument panel out & checked any obvious connections & it seemed to behave - until now.. to add to the fun the rev counter sometimes joins in briefly on the fluctating bit and this morning the fuel gauge had a quick flutter as well, when they all go it's in sync as if there's a loose connection (earth?) somewhere, although only the speedo actually stops reading & this can last from 5 seconds to a minute or so and then it all seems normal again.
  • Driver jailed after 47th ban offence 27 Sep 2005 (Forum)
His latest ofences occurred on Sept 7 when he drove away from a petrol station without paying for £35.00 of fuel. Why is it some people think laws do not apply to them. Personally I do not think the sentence was long enough. -- Roger I read frequently, but only post when I have something useful to add to the thread.
  • Vectra ECU Fault 22 Aug 2005 (Forum)
He suggested replacing the crankshaft sensor which was done but this hasn't rectifired the error as when I go above 3K revs the light comes on and the limp home mode arrives! although there is more power in the emergency mode than before? The garage suggest that it maybe fuel pump at a cost of >£1000.00! Any suggestions? Another point, when I turn the ignition off the light goes out until it starts and goes above 3K revs!
  • Pierburg 2E2 help needed 24 May 2005 (Forum)
On longish drives at a constant speed of about 80mph the car will start to misfire, getting worse until I stop and let it magically fix it?s self, if this happens it really eats fuel. 3. engine tends to idle to fast sometimes I know some people will say bin the pierburg and get a weber but they are very hard to get hold of at the minute due to production problems, so if anyone has a second hand 32/34 DMTL let me know.
  • Engine Pre-Warmers 12 Apr 2005 (Forum)
What I would like to know though is whether anyone out there in Backroomland has any personal experience of using these systems and can atest to the claims made for improved fuel economy and extended engine life. What evidence did you use to reach your conclusions? What were the actual improvements? Did you install the system yourself - was it straight forward? Also what about other car systems that are not pre-warmed (eg. gearboxes or wheel bearings).
  • Is Optimax really necessary? 1 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Now the question is this...In order to maintain optimum performance of the engine and ignoring all other factors, which car would benefit more from Optimax or equivalent fuels. Is it necessary for Car 1 and vital for Car 2? -- Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?
