  • Mini Diesel - Putting the wrong fuel in my car! 25 Jan 2013 (Forum)
Dear John To my horror I recently put petrol in my diesel mini and drove it until it died along the M1.  I read your recommendations and rang...
  • Ford Focus III - Diesel Pariculate Filter Problems 4 May 2010 (Forum)
Dear all, I've had a Ford Focus 1.6 tcdi 06 plate for just over a year.  I bought the car from a well know national car supermarket.  In January the engine management light came on and it turned out that the DPF needed repenishing.  As this was not covered in the entended warrenty I paid for, I had to bring it down to Ford and paid £100 for it.
  • Honda Accord Tourer (2003 - 2008) - Miffed With Honda 12 Feb 2010 (Forum)
The loom had never been secured to prevent this happening, and had no form of outer covering that could have prevented this.
  • Lanzarote Jottings 2 Feb 2010 (Forum)
The locals are suffering fom a shortage of tourists and have taken the strange step of raising prices to try and maintain their income! Car hire is excellent value; I had a 1.2 5 door Fiesta for Euros 108 for the week all included; petrol is 77 cents a litre and with a taxi from and to the airport @ 80 euros, a car for a week for 108 made good sense.
  • Jaguar XJS V12 (1975 - 1995) - Irrational XJS purchase. Mid-life crisis already? 2 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Being still under 40 I am wondering if I have already reached the 1/2 way point..... Browsing the Classic Car section of Ebay and saw a car I have liked for years and I instantly fell in love. 1991 Jaguar XJS 5.3 litre V12 convertible in black, cream leather and a history file going back to the day it was built, stuffed full of receipts showing exceptional love and devotion.
  • Rover 400 (1995 - 1999) - Is there a 1600cc K series engine? 21 May 2009 (Forum)
Is the 416 a pile of carp, or was I silly to pass it up? The owner said it had covered 80,000 miles, a bit more than half my car's mileage.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 97 1.4 Urgent help needed! ignition problems! 18 Aug 2008 (Forum)
so to start the car i have to wiggle my old key thob on the top of the igniton barrel to get it starting, which is a right pain because that means i have to leave the steering wheel covering off to do so. was wondering if there was a way of taking out my immobiliser all together?
  • Diesel Reliability 29 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Once again the subject of unreliable modern diesels has popped up on the forum. Also HJ alludes to it in his column this week. I switched to diesel 12 years ago and have covered almost 500k miles in various diesel powered cars since. With the notable exception of a Renault Espace they have all been faultless. The question I have for anyone who has access to the facts is this.
  • Blocking of both lanes when two lanes merge to one 2 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Pity the lady in the red car near Filton in Bristol who accelerated to fill a gap of at least 30 yards that I tried to slot into nearly stuffing her car into me in the process, all horns and lights blazing. All in the aid of ensuring that her spot in the queue was kept.
  • Corsa 1.0 ecotec oil leak 22 Apr 2007 (Forum)
My girlfriend's corsa has started leaking oil, and my first thoughts were that she might have hit a raised man hole cover and cracked the sump. However, when I came to look at the car the sump was fine. I checked the oil level - normal - so I started the car and watched underneath for the drips to start. It is leaking from what looks like a pressure sensor (immediately to the left of the oil level dipstick) I've looked through my Haynes manual and can't find any pictures or references to it.
  • Sunblinds for rear doors. 13 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Hi, I have a Ford S-Max and now that the sun has arrived i really need some sunblinds for the reardoors to stop the sun going in my babies eyes and to keep her cool. The problem I have is that the door windows are HUGE on the S-Max and a standard sunbline covers only about 1/3 of the window!!! I know that I could fit multiple roller blinds but I am also keen on being able to lower the window whilst still having the blind up if possible. I know that you can get window sox but they need to be taken on and off everytime you go out in the car.
  • clutch failure on 2005 8000-mile Meriva 5 Apr 2007 (Forum)
The manual clutch on my father's 2005 1.6 Meriva, which he has owned from new, just failed abruptly leaving him stranded on the A38. The car has done under 8000 miles. Nearly all of that has been clocked up on motorways and country roads. His garage/dealership told him the problem was down to wear-and-tear, not covered by warranty. He has just paid a bill of 700 quid for a new clutch.
  • £3K to £4K to spend 25 Mar 2007 (Forum)
I have been considering a 1.8/2.0 P11-144 Primera or Honda Accord. To be honest, I don't need such a big car and have also been considering the Almera/Focus/Astra. I cover around 17K private miles a year. Perhaps I should also be looking at a diesel or lpg? Getting to work involves 20 mins traffic free urban, 20 mins motorway queueing and 30 mins traffic free motorway, so the car needs to be comfortable and reasonably quiet at motorway speeds.
  • Fiesta HG Gone :( 9 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Following my burning oil thread, I have realised that is has not been burning oil at all but its steam and thats why it gets worse as the engine heats up. I took off the rocker cover to find lots of creamy mayo in it, and the radiator header tank looks a tiny bit contaminated. I am not sure what to do, I am not taking this car in to be fixed, I will just either have to live with it (its not drinking much coolant yet) or pray K-SEAL fixes it.
  • Mondeo TDCi Oil Level 2 May 2006 (Forum)
The whole of the plastic gauge part is covered in oil when dipped, well over the max mark, and I'm pretty sure the dipstick is coming out without dragging on the sides of the tube. I've dipped it whilst stone cold and it's parked on the level.
  • 2004 Polo 1.4 brake deglazing ? 19 Feb 2006 (Forum)
t=37755 ) in the offside front wheel area is "probably" caused by the brakes needing deglazing due to "driving style". This will cost £220 as it is not covered by the warranty. Head office have repeated this "driving style" excuse when I spoke to them. I am confused as to how a squeak can be caused by shiny brakes when they are not engaged and secondly why this fault should occur at all after about 6 months in a brand new car.
  • Starting out in the motor trade 5 Sep 2005 (Forum)
I am looking at starting out for the first time trading from home. I am looking for some help / advice. I think I have most things covered off. The only thing I have left is trade insurance. i have spoken to a number of companies that dispose of cars and they are looking for trade insurance as proof I am in the trade. I dont work in the motor trade and have had a few quotes but they all seem to be £2000 plus.
  • Is it worth buying?? 24 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Hi, I have been looking an August '97 2.0 LX Auto Mondeo with a mileage of 50k. I was told that the owner had bought the car in Sep 2000, but took ill just after the purchase. The dealer delivered the car to his house and it has been sitting there ever since. Obviously I could not get it going as the battery was dead, however the interior is not too bad considering.
  • Oil filter leaking? Escort 1.3 1 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Hi Car is an '89 Escort 1.3 HCS (OHV) I've been a bit of a naughty boy recently and haven't checked the oil in my car since it last had an oil/filter change in January. When I checked this morning, guess what?
  • C3 Clutch 3 Nov 2004 (Forum)
They say the clutch has burned out and needs to be replaced, and that this is down to wear and tear. They would like a shade under £400 to replace it. My wife drives the car mainley, and I know she is not prone to 'riding' the clutch, and has had no such problems with either of her previous cars, in which she covered more than 40000 miles. Anybody else agree with me that this is unacceptable?
