punto brake discs 23 Jan 2004 (Forum)
I admit that I drive the car quite hard and accept that pads & front tyres have to be changed regulary. However I was surprised at the discs. Would you expect the life of the discs to equal that of two sets of pads, or does this sound a bit much? -
New driver insurance 21 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Hi We're about to get a first car (1.0 Corsa 98S) for my 17 year old stepson who hasn't passed his test yet, and are checking out the insurance options. At the moment the best bet seems to be for my wife, who currently doesn't have a policy/NCD in her own name, to buy/register it and insure herself with son as named driver- this comes to about £1k. -

7 seater advice please 17 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Is there some reason why they're such a poor seller? Alternatively, if I were to tighten my budget and go for an old Merc or Volvo seven-seater, which would be the one to go for? thanks, Henry B (new to this forum) -
Inertia marketing 14 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Its just happened to me again!!!!!!! Motorcycle (same applies to car) insurance renewal quote £262. Make a few calls, best price £190 with something called \'puncture assistance\' thrown in. Deal done. Call old company to cancel previous insurance, get put through to the \'we will do anything to try and stop you cancelling department\'. -
Pierburg 1b carb 1 Jul 2003 (Forum)
hello, Im new to this forum and had a question regarding a Pierburg 1b on an old golf GX (1983). Firstly it seems to be missing the vacuum hose which connects to the distributor (is this what they call the vacuum advance/retard?) - but i didn't know where it connected to the carb/engine. -
Jaguar X type ( TDCi) misfire? 26 Jun 2003 (Forum)
He also said that there was some hesitation on acceleration when using partial throttle. I wondered if anyone else had any knowledge of this and is it the old TDCi misfire/ TDi tip in tip out problem yet again? Whilst I can more or less forgive it in my coarse but fun mondeo I would think that this would be a major embarrassment in a car which claims such refinement as a jag. -
Posh Estates 23 Jun 2003 (Forum)
I really want an umarket, high spec second hand (2 to 3 years old)estate car. I rather like the Audi A6, the BMW 5 series is good but I am put off that they are everywhere. THe Merc E class is just too expensive. The Saab 9-5 is very appealing but the fact that it is a Vectra underneath puts me off.Should I give them all amiss and become a Volvo V70 driver. -
Peugeot 306 'M' reg turbo diesel. 17 Apr 2003 (Forum)
I have studied the 'laid up' sec. of FAQ's but it really doesn't fully cover my problem. My 19 yrs. old soldier grandson left his base in Germany in some haste last Feb. to go to Iraq, where he expects to stay some 6-12 months. He has left the above car standing unattended in Germany. I am not just concerned about flat battery and flat spot tyres but also whether the remote control zapper will work, the turbo draining of oil , and brake problems. -
Approaching roundabouts in wrong lane 22 Dec 2002 (Forum)
Have experienced yet another example of someone approaching a roundabout in the wrong lane to save maybe one minute and expecting to drift to the left into the lane they wanted all along when 3/4 of the way through. The car in this case was an old silver LS400. He saw fit to lean on his horn when I had the temerity not to slam my breaks on, cause an accident and let him in. One hand signal later (from me, yes - I should'nt have less than two hands on the wheel) I'm on my way. -
Carland half price sale 9 Dec 2002 (Forum)
If you'd paid anywhere near full price for these, you'd have been stitched up big time. (£6k for a five year old Brava? I don't think so!) So all in all, if these cars have been on the forecourt for ages and they'd otherwise have been auctioned (imagine trying to shift a Focus saloon in purple) then Carland is about £1k down and has probably spent 20 or even 50 times that on adveritsing the allegedly massive savings. -
Vectra, cutting out 2 Nov 2002 (Forum)
If anyone cares to post a list of appropriate questions for me to pass on to him that may help to eliminate or elicit possible causes or cures I would be grateful. I can then get back to you with his responses. Much obliged, as me old mum used to say. Rita -
Citroen ZX Petrol/Diesel Binnacles 20 Oct 2002 (Forum)
Does anyone know if things like the connections will fit and a petrol rev counter work on a diesel if I just try a straight swap, or shall I just transplant the speedo head alone into my old binnacle? -
Honda Civic R 1 Aug 2002 (Forum)
2. My old man has an Impreza turbo and is always bragging. How does the Honda stand up to the scooby? (I would love an impreza but they are just to expensive.) 3. Any horror stories? TIA Acrabat -
Pattern oil filters etc 24 Jul 2002 (Forum)
can anyone direct me to a newer source of information on pattern (rather than makers "own") oil filters. After reading Car Mechanics I had a look at http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/oil_filter_study This is obviously a few years old, done by a layman rather than a professional, and based on American sources not British, but it does seem to indicate that many sources of what I had believed to be OE standard replacement parts are now manufactured in the third world, and may be of doubtful quality. -
Rover 214 sli K series...help pse 16 Jul 2002 (Forum)
SWMBO's old model 1995, 70,000mile rover has broken down and despite me being 200 miles away when it happened, naturally it is my fault! Driving along when suddenly power dies off and engine doesnt respond to throttle, it idles but wont rev up. -
Gearbox Oil Checks 25 Jun 2002 (Forum)
Can anyone tell me where the gearbox oil filler is on my 406 HDi. The Haynes manual doesn't do HDi's yet and as the car is new-to-me, I'm keen to give it a thorough once-over despite its full service history. Ta. Just as a supplementary to this (and the reason why I want to check the Pug), some time ago my wife bought a 5 year-old Polo with a full (mainly dealer) service history. -
Cowboy servicing 28 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Upon requesting (verbally) for an MOT prep with brakes for his ageing 2.0 GSi primera, (N.Ireland MOT's are conducted by official government run centres not local garages as on the mainland) and specifically declining any washing, oil, filters etc (due to DIY servicing) He gets an additional £86 parts + VAT & £30 + VAT labour bill for a full service, they even replaced a 6 month old fuel filter! He paid by cheque, as they would not release the car until paid. The owner accepted there had been a mistake but would not reduce the bill. Other than reporting to trading standards, what (if anything) can he do? -
306 Temperature fluctuation 22 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Having recieved good advice on my radiator issues about 12 months ago from you guys I have another small issue. The radiator is a new one, well one year old, and doesn't leak at all or to my knowledge have any airlocks as bleeding was carried out as per suggestions and worked very well. In the last week the temperature guage in the car has been fluctuating between 80 and 90oC when in the past it would remain at 80oC all the time without movement unless in traffic (a very rare occurance).
