  • Starting Problems on Golf 3 16v 31 May 2003 (Forum)
Its an intermittent fault but when it does happen, the engine starts and revs to maybe 1500 - 2000 rpm and then cuts dead. Sometimes it will start after A LOT of effort but after a while the battery runs dead. I came back to it this afternoon (nice hot day) and it burst into life with no problem! Frustrating! I've sent it to 2 garges where they did diagnostics but found nothing - one replaced the vacuum hose to no avail, the other couldn't think of anything so cleaned the injectors which did help for a bit.
  • Top tip 21 Jan 2003 (Forum)
It was a flat bit of road (so I couldn't push start it myself), nobody else around and the engine wouldn't turn over because the battery, which probably was not in its prime of life, had been flattened. I fitted another belt I had floating around in the back, jacked up a rear wheel, put the car in gear and placed my toolbox on the accelerator (as you need to give it a half throttle to start it when it is hot).
  • VW info and mk2 Polo Electrics 30 Dec 2001 (Forum)
I have lost power feed to wipers, fan (heater) and rear screen on daughters car and need to put on the road pronto. (Well it is on the road with a temporary direct feed from the battery via a 30A fuse direct to the fuse box, but I would like to do the job properly tomorrow, or I wont get a birthday present). If the fault clears itself, the reverse power feed may mean you cannot kill the ignition!
  • The Auto Taser 22 Aug 2001 (Forum)
For those of you who don't know, the Auto Taser is an anti-theft device that clamps across the steering wheel. It contains a stun gun system powered by 3 PP3 batteries. It fits across the stereo area and when armed, emits a warning flasher light. On being disturbed, the TAser first emits an agonising shrill squeal then lightning flashes up and down the barrel.
  • Starting Motor engaging whilst driving 27 Jul 2001 (Forum)
The first occasion the ignition switch and well as the starter motor was replaced. Last week I had a second "experience". On this occasion the starter motor had blown the battery. so this too along with the starter motor had to be replaced. The ignition switch was found to be sound and working correctly with no signs of "sticking". On investigation local dealership/& Vauxhall technical division say they have had no reports of similar faults reported.
  • Hyundai Ioniq EV - First 1500 all electric miles 9 Jun 2021 (Forum)
No gear changes, no engine noise, no fuss. Just put your foot down and go. On the EV side, from a 38kwh battery, we see 180-200 miles from a full charge, getting over 5 miles/kwh easily. (By reputation, no other EV, save a Tesla 3, is as efficient). We considered a bigger battery/range model, but just couldn't justify the additional cost for those very occasional longer drives.
  • Skoda rapid - 2 years / 20k miles in a Rapid (HB) 29 Mar 2016 (Forum)
My only "breakdown" was entirely self inflicted - I left the lights on all day last year and completely flattened the battery. I then realised it is not possible to open the bonnet when the battery is flat, necessitating my only call to Skoda assist during my ownership. The bonnet release lever is fouled by the passenger door trim, meaning it is not possible to pull the lever, without first opening the "deadlocked" door.
  • All - EV Buying Advice 3 Jul 2025 (Forum)
So, from people experience, can anyone make any suggestions for a short list I can go and test drive? Finally, I've ruled out a Leaf mainly because of the outdated DC charging and the aircooled battery, as I will be keeping this car for a very long time and I can only see the Leaf being a hindrance to this. Thanks, Dougal
  • Renault Clio E-tech hybrid - Impressions after the first 1000 miles 21 Apr 2024 (Forum)
Renault say that the maximum distance the car will travel in EV mode is under 2 miles. The 1.2kW traction battery is charged when decelerating or braking, there is no facility to plug into the mains. In spite of this, nearly half of the first 1000 miles has been covered in EV mode. The data log reads Total distance 1004.6 miles Distance travelled in electric mode 470.1 miles Average fuel consumption 54.7mpg Average electric consumption 8.9miles/ kWh Total recuperated energy 48.6kWh Average speed 21.9 mph  Without electrical assistance, a 1.6 petrol automatic like this would probably return around 30mpg on a good day (purely a guess).
  • Isuzu D-Max - "Check System" message, keyfob failure 5 Dec 2023 (Forum)
Dealer tried moving receiver down away from behind central display, radio, etc, saying it was related to radio warming, but that has not worked.  Same occurs with both key fobs and no indication of low battery.  This occurred later the same day that I damaged the towbar socket, letting in water.  Three other faults also occurred the same day: 1) no reversing light when reverse gear selected.  2) no central display switching to rear camera when reverse selected (can switch to camera manually).
  • Audi A3 Sportback - Car occasionally decides it doesn't want to start! 21 Jul 2023 (Forum)
When it has refused to start I have been able to jump it fine but the last time it happened it wouldnt start from jumping it and had to bump it. Battery and alternator are fine. My Dad didn't think it was the starter but the person who helped me bump it last time said they think it could be the starter sticking ??‍?? It went to the garage for a mot a while ago and was fine before however there wasnt a great amount of diesel in the car (would have been enough for a simple mot) and they ended up doing some work on it to do with high emissions where they put a trearment in and took the car for a drive.
  • Choosing an SUV for long drives? 28 Jun 2023 (Forum)
Several dealers have told me petrol hybrid is the way to go, but I don’t see how they can maintain their top efficiency for long drives, as the battery surely has to deplete eventually. I am not sure what the petrol+electric mode is called in order to do further research. The CR-V 1.6L 2WD Diesel is the car I have done the most research into.
  • Off to Spain this summer? A couple of reminders. 22 Jun 2023 (Forum)
Warning triangles (two for Spanish registered vehicles, otherwise one) are gradually being replaced by a much safer "Help Flash" battery-powered magnetic roof beacon, which you can pick up for about €20 in an accessory shop. Hi-viz jackets are required for anyone exiting a broken down vehicle.  ¡Felices vacaciones!
  • Berlingo Multispace / Ford B or Grand C Max? - I need help choosing next vehicle 7 Jan 2022 (Forum)
Unfortunately,  I broke my ankle 20 days ago badly 3 bones and have a long recovery ahead before I can drive again. It's been advised I get an automatic car going forward.  So since I've had the Berlingo 2 batteries  have been replaced  couple of sensors issues and now nox sensor needs replacing,  being done under warranty thankfully! Shall I stick with Berlingo (just blips)  and go automatic or change brand ie to a Ford Grande C Max with sliding doors ie more reliable or can anyone think of another vehicle that will be good as an automatic for my needs .
  • Mini cooper 2002 - Mini sometimes won't turn over 23 Mar 2021 (Forum)
A few month ago I drove to the paper shop ,when I came out the car wouldn't start, all the lights came on yet nothing on the last bit of the turn, no noise , nothing.. I'd replaced the battery a few month before so I knew it wasn't that. I rang a friend and he said it's sounds like the starter motor. I turned the key again and it started so I took it to a local garage, he asked me to bring the spare key as he wanted to try a different key.
  • Hyundia Sante Fe SE 2015 Decemeber 14k miles one - TPMS and 4 wheel tracking, 2 questions 18 Sep 2020 (Forum)
I will phone the car makers re warranty but doubt if the tpms is included as it appears the battery have run out. But you think they are covered as low miles and used on 300 mile round trips only so not driven for many hours. My husband has a Mercedes ML, 2014 bought new, 20k on the clock and tpms still working.
  • Ford Focus 1.6 tdci 2007 - Engine Systems Fault 28 Dec 2019 (Forum)
I then phoned Ford UK helpline, a premium rate number, first person said it was under the battery but only thing there was an engine mount, had to phone again and this time was told, after what seemed like ages, it was relay 12 in the engine fusebox, strange as the relay I got from the ford dealer doesn't look anything like the R12, which is a standard looking grey relay whereas the one i got is alot taller, different connections and has a mounting hole.
  • Ford Focus Estate 2007 TDI 1.8L - How do I keep rodents out of engine compartment 12 Aug 2019 (Forum)
Recently I had an electrical problem which was diagnosed as rodents having got in behind the battery compartment and chewed some wiring. (I assume this happened a few monts ago when it was cold and it only recently manifested itself). Luckily it was repairable and did NOT require a new loom (otherwise bye-bye a really great car).
  • Electric scooter 24 May 2019 (Forum)
The Chinese-made Ego Street Scoota will let you zip around the city using bus lanes, avoiding congestion charges and cutting out queues, all without buying petrol or paying for road tax. Powered by an onboard battery that's recharged via the mains, it boasts a range of up to 40 miles with a top speed of 30mph and it the claim is that it only costs 8 pence to charge (8 hours needed for a full juice up) and of course, is super eco-friendly.
  • SEAT Toledo - Strange Electrical Problem 1.6 TDI 11 Feb 2019 (Forum)
Hi, for the past few weeks, my car has developed a strange power issue which I can't figure out. The car is serviced annually, currently has around 55k on the clock  and had a new battery around 6 months ago as the old one simply gave up and refused to charge. The problem... The car will start fine but while the engine is running (it can be under load or idling) I can hear a "click" sound and at the same time, all the electrics loose power for a split second and very shortly afterwards, if the engine is idling, the rpm will drop by around 200 again, just for a split second.
