  • Mondeo air con 6 Sep 2006 (Forum)
I havent noticed it before but today I filled up with petrol and noticed quite a large puddle under the car, just rear of the bulkhead. Anyway....I called out the breakdown people and they looked at it and said it was "normal". After feeling a bit stupid, I carried on but checked again later.......still doing it.

  • Volkswagen goodwill gesture 6 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Annoyingly she has taken out a 3 year service plan (including breakdown recovery) with VW and can't think of any accessories. So far there has been no mention of the value of such a gesture. Comments would be appreciated.
  • Is my brother about to buy a lemon? 10 Apr 2003 (Forum)
I've checked in the C-B-C breakdown and it's the 2.1td that seems to be problematic. Any of you BRers have any experience (good or bad) of these motors? Many thanks for your help.
  • VW Bora Windscreen Wipers 6 Mar 2002 (Forum)
We found somewhere to park and checked the fuse which was OK. After about half an hour we were just about to ring the breakdown people when we tried them again and they were fine. The car is fitted with a rain sensor and when they stopped working they were on the intermittent setting. Has anybody got any ideas what could have happened?
  • New car 12 Feb 2020 (Forum)
Hoping someone could recommend a decent car. Both mine and husbands cars have decided to breakdown, I'm due to start maternity leave soon and can do without a car for a while (parents live close and I am insured on their cars). Husband drives a 2013 petrol Astra.
  • Good car 24 Feb 2003 (Forum)
I am new here, and female too, but do need some good advice, not bothered in the least by street cred, but am looking for another car S/H, between 6-8k, now looked in the car by car breakdown over the Civic, but it says it is not a galvanised body so it has turned me off a bit, the other car is the Nissan Almera, one thing i have learnt on this site, buy Japanese so i have listened to you.Not in a rush though, like my Ford Fiesta zerec, well how it drives but quality is crap and it was a friday afternoon car too, its cost me a bomb and Fords main dealer cannot/will not fix my raining in so i just want to change my car and let one if the kids have this one as a runaround, i do about 25-30 thousand a year.
  • Peugeot 306 XUD9TE Conrod failure 30 Oct 2016 (Forum)
Taken from the excellent car-by-car breakdown section of this most excellent site..... \"Spate of conrod failures on 1997-1998 R and S reg 1.9 XUTD diesels; one case of a late reg T: too many to attribute merely to running with low oil levels.
  • Volvo S80 - European Car Insurance for Switzerland 28 Jul 2011 (Forum)
My comprehensivecar car insurance covers me for 90 days in the EU (both Comprehensive and the statutory Third Party). On contacting my insurance company  (HSBC) about whether I could  travel into Switzerland I was told it was not covered by my insurance.
  • Rover 200 and 400 (1989 - 1996) - Electrical fault 1.4 petrol DOHC 10 Nov 2008 (Forum)
I was travelling at around 40 mph when the car experienced a virtual total electrical failure. At first the breakdown mechanic suspected a battery failure, he connected a battery booster and it no effect. The battery is only about a year old I had no problem starting the car about 5 minutes early.
  • Unable to charge flat battery 30 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Yesterday dear beloved daughter phoned - had left courtesy light on her sports car for two days and now vehicle refused to start. Obviously flat battery so round to hers with jump leads. Connected up and donor car running.....zonk... nothing when car ignition turned. Neither was there anything from horn or lights.
  • Jaguar S-type - experiences? 24 Jul 2006 (Forum)
t=42318&v=f In my more sober mood, I've decided that I still want a bit of luxury, so I've come the the conclusion that while an S-class might have some disadvantages, an S-type might be sufficient for me. I've read the car-by-car breakdown and still like them. Couple of things - The ones I'm looking at are 2.5V6s, 2003, all about 60K miles. Is that cambelt change time for the car? Does it have a belt or a chain?
  • Reliable Rental Cars 26 May 2005 (Forum)
Over the years (say at least 35) I have been driven in or have driven literally hundreds of hire cars and racked up tens of thousands of miles in at least 10 countries. As far as I can remember, I have never suffered (other than self-inflicted) a breakdown or puncture. In fact apart from my father losing the keys to a Fiat minibus in 1974 in Pisa and him having a puncture on top of the Andes a few weeks ago, when he took a dirt track over the top rather than the main highway, we cannot recall between us a single incident.
  • Test Drive Technique...? 23 Feb 2005 (Forum)
The latest possibles are an Audi A6 2.0 SE (N plate, 130k miles) and an Audi 100 2.6 SE (K plate 102k miles). I'm happy enough with the prices being asked but in Honest Johns Car by Car breakdown he suggests to be aware that the autobox might be worn. Is there anything in particular I can do while on the test drive that will give me some pointers? I know to check the ATF and the service history for fluid changes, and one of the cars has a tow bar fitted which I guess will have a bearing on condition, but has anyone got any other suggestions?
  • Nissan Primera 2.0 SVE auto 19 Nov 2004 (Forum)
My car is under 3 years old but out of warranty due to 87,000 miles. Last week I learnt the head gasket has gone (after a M25 breakdown!) but because this will be its 3rd replacement (last one 20,000 miles ago)Nissan say they will only guarantee the work if I have a new cylinder head as well!
  • Towing driverless cars 9 Apr 2004 (Forum)
Saw a motorhome last week towing a Ford Ka via a short towbar. No friver in Ka, all four wheels on ground. I've seen breakdown trucks towing this way too. So how does the towed car not decide it wants to take a different course to the one that's towing it? Tracking, tyre pressures, etc spot-on? Steering locked? Or do vehicles towed in this way just behave themselves naturally?
  • Fiat Multipla safety upgrade 10 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Okay, I know there's a thread about this in the Archive, but thought I would resurrect the query about the mythical Fiat Multipla safety upgrade, to which HJ himself alludes in his Car-By-Car Breakdown entry for this model. The EURO NCAP test results (mid 2001) report Fiat's claim to implement it from models on-sale late 2001 onwards. Can anyone say with certainty if indeed the design has been amended to achieve a four-star result; and, if so, from what date and chassis number?
  • Vx parts in N.London-M1/M4 corridor 20 May 2002 (Forum)
(I'm thinking of "eurocarparts" or "German&Swedish" type) My Neighbour has just bought a '95 Omega 3.0 Elite saloon and is looking to do "minor" DIY servicing/repairs. Apart from HJ's comments in the Car-by-Car breakdown is there anything I should warn him of? Many thanks, Chad.R PS. It got 89k on the clock and has full Vx Service history with the Cambelt done at 72k. The interior is immaculate with every conceivable extra bar Sat Nav.
  • Peugeot 405, rust. 31 Mar 2001 (Forum)
In HJ's car by car breakdown for the Peugeot 405, rust appears at the top of the list of what's bad. HJ also said about the 405 a while ago: Look for rust "in the seams and in the brake lines. Get the thing on a hoist and have a good look underneath.
