  • You could've knocked me down with a Rover! 6 Jun 2008 (Forum)
So I said quite loudly "that's right mate, keep death of the roads, drive on the pavement!". He retorts with something along the lines that the old dear he's helping can hardly walk and that one day I'd be old too. My reply was "If I get to live that long with idiots like you around!"
  • Rover Metro (1990 - 1995) - 1994? 1.1k series - rough running after HG change. 17 Jan 2008 (Forum)
It wasn't worth spending money getting a pro to do the job, so a couple of amateurs had a go at changing it for the cost of just the headgasket kit. The car drives, and passed an MoT. However, it drives really badly and has done ever since the headgasket change. You can put the accelerator pedal to the floor and the car will actually slow down, it even thinks of stalling.
  • Clio off roader 19 Oct 2007 (Forum)
I have been brought up on a farm and worked on them all my adult life and because I get paid to drive a real tractor would rather poke my eyes out with a stick then buy some pathetic SUV. Anyway, I have been harvesting potatoes in a 64 acre field for a couple of weeks and in said field there is a trail plot.
  • Why are supercars so wide? 16 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Well, why did Ferraris and their ilk become so wide? They only seat two people and their raison d'etre was a fast drive through a wide range of non-motorway roads. I imagine the opening sequence to The Italian Job as being the absolute pinnacle of Italian supercar driving, sweeping along a winding twisting road high above the Italian Riviera (excluding the JCB of course).
  • A bargain,am I missing something? 20 Jun 2007 (Forum)
This seems exceptional value for what should be a reliable safer car with Aircon/ ABS / CD etc. Am I missing something? I realise a Focus would give a better drive and look nicer, that is clear, but as my wife does only 3,000 miles a year, driving pleasure takes a back seat against value and safety. Also the most savage depreciation has passed and it is likely only to lose 100's £ per year rather than 000's.
  • Honda Jazz 1.4 DSI S + optional AC 3 Jul 2006 (Forum)
Assuming they have fixed the problem and get an invite to test drive the car, we will look at other Jazz SE model which will have the AC and sunroof, but cost a few hundred pounds more. Any feedback is appreciated.
  • Comfortable Ride? 30 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Vehicles made only in the last oohhhh say eight years... I'll go first. Subaru Forester Mk1 (not drive Mk2 yet). Father just bought a five year old non turbo model. Incredibly good ride and and handling. Just ignores most surface imperfections, that my Volvo would magnify 100 times. any others -- Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?
  • Be careful out there! 29 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Those who have driven in ice and snow will know that cars behave completely differently. I don't know a great deal about driving in snow myself except that it requires driving very carefully and at sensible speeds for the conditions. Hopefully we can avoid some more accidents by giving some careful thought to very different conditions, rather than simply being caught out by them.
  • Large 4x4s again! 23 May 2005 (Forum)
Can I compare this to MPVs. These are mainly driven by women who have to drive lots of children to school, they are higher than the average car, and therefore have prescence. They are usually driven badly etc etc etc... There is also limited difference in economy unless the MPVs are derv drinkers.
  • What causes Road Rage 31 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Driving along minding my own business, right speed, right lane, aware of other road users etc etc. Travel round a roundabout keeping in my lane and overtaken by hooting and gesticulating car and driver plus wife and 2 kids in the back.
  • Mk1 Mondeo problem! 9 Feb 2005 (Forum)
I then have to restart, and sit there with my foot on the rev's to keep the engine from stalling. Then, what will happen, is I will drive around town, and or drive a long way eg:200 miles, and pull up a junction, (off the motorway) and as soon as it hits idle, it will stall... All of this happens on and off, and its just totally irregular..
  • Gritter has pierced my Radiator 24 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Right then here's the scenario. Driving along the last night on a normal A-road and coming the other way was a gritting truck going like a bat out of hell. I slowed down a touch, but as the truck passed the car I was driving, it got hammered by grit.
  • Dealer indifference 11 Jan 2005 (Forum)
"But there are four of us" "Ah, Sir, it's a five seater" "But that means my wife will be sitting in the back between the car seats. Also, she won't get a chace to drive because I can't fit in that gap" "Well, then, Sir, I'll go for a drive with her, then with you" "But we want to try it for a couple of hours - try in on the motorway, round town, along a B road; try to get some idea of whether we'd like to live with it" "Can't do it, Sir" "Honestly?"
  • troubles starting - skoda octavia 1.4 9 Jan 2005 (Forum)
    another thing: there's a light "check motor electronics" on the dashboard lighting, but the garagist says that I don't have to care much about this because I'm driving on LPG... (the LPG installation works very good, so that is not the problem because starting the engine is on fuel) {car make added to subject header.}
  • brava dash light and advice 6 Jan 2005 (Forum)
also, its done 86,000 miles, and i want to get it serviced, iv only been driving it the last 1,000 miles, and the people i bought it from are pretty much cowboys. It needs to be able to drive long distances, so does anyone have any tips on main hardware that will need to be replaced/inspected?
  • Who's behind Mr Flat Cap? 31 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Whilst on holiday recently and with nothing else better to do, I pondered over the world's problems and of course Mr Flat Cap came to mind. I can't pin-point the exact time my Father donned his flat cap and adopted the driving characteristics we all know and love. I do remember in my youth that I was always impressed with his driving, he was certainly no slouch. But some time after I had fled the nest and his Grandchildren came on the scene, the gradual process took place.
  • Driving lesson after 20 years! 19 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Well it's been over 20 years since I had a driving lesson so, given that I'm assisting Mrs V. to learn, I thought it might be wise to sit in on her lesson to a) see how her official instructor handled things and b) in what respects the test and the required standards have changed over time.
  • Optimax test results 8 Mar 2004 (Forum)
One credit card (Tesco) Lots of Shell Optimax The M3, M25 and A3 mainly. Method: Fill car to brim with Optimax (from as near empty as I dare). Drive 3281 miles that match usual driving mix as far as possible. Fill car to brim with Optimax (at the same pump in the same garage) Work out fuel consumption Results: Used 107.3 Gallons, equalling a fuel consumption of 30.6mpg Usual consumption of car is 31mpg, so this is probably within errors an unchanged fuel consumption.
  • Impreza WRX - shall I, shan't I 10 Feb 2004 (Forum)
This isn't really a "what car shall I buy" thread, really just seeing if I am going to make a spectacle of myself. I currently drive a 2001 Wobbly 3.0 Omega which for reasons I've posted before I've got to get rid of. None of the cars I've driven in the past(mostly company cars) can I honestly say I've enjoyed driving - particularly the Omega.
  • Changing oil grades - 1.4 Escort (1992) 31 Jan 2004 (Forum)
i cant see any obvious leeks (oil filter, sump plug, seals etc) so am assuming its burning a bit - i do a lot of motorway driving - M25s constant slowing and accelerating, and M3 rolling hills - and i admit to driving hard and fast (no reprimands please) Getting to the point, as thw 5W30 is a thin oil at the best of times, would upgrading to a 40 weight oil (hot temp) stop the oil buring off quite so much - as its thicker and may not seep past slighlty worn pistin rings/valves etc quite so easily..
