Right: Old car - 1996 (N) Peugeot 406 1.9 TD LX. Metallic silver, 125k miles. No air con. Very good condition for year - belt change 10k miles ago, four new tyres (6mm on back, new on front), minor scratches and dings but nothing exceptional.
  • No MOT Certificate 8 Sep 2005 (Forum)
My car had it's MOT yesterday. It's the first one I've had since the mid 90's, as I've always got rid of the cars before the 3 year old mark. I was not given an MOT certificate. The car is funded through a Private Contract Plan, through VW Finance.
  • Windscreen and icing 21 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Level of condensation is normal in that other cars have the same amount on the outside, I guess my door seals are old? Any top tips for reducing the condensation? Cos it freezes now and I'm unlikely to buy new seals. I was thinking maybe ski-waxing the inside of the windows so the water doesn't hold. whaddya reckon?
  • Buying a 325i Coupe Sport 2 Oct 2004 (Forum)
I'm looking to buy a 325i Coupe Sport along the following lines Manual gearbox, leather interior up to 1.5 years old up to £23k Any reasons why buying such a car is a bad idea eg resale value etc. Any suggestions as to where to buy such a car, is a BMW main dealer a good idea or simply over priced.. I have been offered a mystic blue manual 325i coupe sport with black leather (BMW head office car) through a main dealer which was registered in Dec 2003 and has 7k miles on for £24k.
  • aftermarket remote central locking 4 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Is there any cheap way of doing this while still using the standard alarm (this is the one that briefly beeps at you when locking the doors)? Is there any make better than the other? On her old car I had installed a Clifford. The problem with this was that if you did not start the engine within 30secs of opening up then the immobiliser cut in (not really a problem just a little annoying).
  • Q Car Advice 12 Oct 2003 (Forum)
I'm looking to spend about £20k so I realise that I'm looking at something a couple of years old, other requirements are mondeo size and with a good reputation for reliability. Present thinking is Audi A4 in previous S4 guise (like the idea of 4 wheel drive) but any suggestions would be most welcome.
  • a car for all seasons 21 Jul 2003 (Forum)
A Skoda might be a bit small and scrape the ground? I have a Volvo 740 at the moment but it is a thirsty old thing now.
  • LPG Conversion on a Volvo 22 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Hi, I am thinking of purchasing an Volvo C70 T5, since I do a lot of motorway driving and like a good value car. As they seem to be around 10-13k for a 2yr old with 30k miles on. And I currently do around 25-35k PA and my company I work for give me 13.5p per mile. My question is do LPG converstions work well with turbo cars?

  • load restraint for Focus estate 4 Nov 2002 (Forum)
I want to prevent what's in the back of the car (e.g. garden rubbish) from joining me in the front. My old Vectra estate had a vertical load net supplied as standard, my Focus estate doesn't, and there don't seem to be anywhere in the car for such a net to clip on.
  • Yaris D-4D 28 Jul 2002 (Forum)
After much soul searching over the last six months I have finally decided on the Yaris D-4D(PAS) to replace my ailing 12 year old Metro. Some while back the 'Right Car - Wrong Car' programme managed to obtain a GS Yaris (petrol) for a guy at the knock down price of £6k. Some 2k off! (at a car supermarket) Since then I have been all round the houses looking for a good deal.

  • Endangered species 9 Oct 2001 (Forum)
(And good riddance, I hear you say.) I can't really see anyone bothering to weld up and respray an old Talbot Alpine or Renault 14 - could these cars actually end up extinct?
  • VECTRA MISSFIRE 7 Jul 2001 (Forum)
MY PROBLEM IS,THE CAR IS ONLY 2.5 YRS OLD 26000 MILES ON THE CLOCK IS REGULARLY SERVICED AT A VAUXHALL DEALER AND HAS NEVER EXPERIENCED ANY OTHER PROBLEMS BEFORE. WHY SHOULD WE PAY THESE EXTREMELY HIGH PRICES FOR UNEXPECTED WORK ON A VERY LOW MILAGE WELL LOOKED AFTER NEWISH CAR.
  • Mazda Xedos 6 - Jerky drivetrain 28 Mar 2001 (Forum)
The clutch / accelerator / gearbox combo just doesn't seem to be harmony. The Mazda garage says the car is fine and there's no fault. However, it is no way near as fluid as driving, say a BMW 318is Coupe (my old car), in the same conditions. Anyone have any ideas or any experience or how to cure this?
  • Volkswagen - Reason for change of ownership on V5C 20 May 2025 (Forum)
We are looking to buy a VW GTi, just under 3 years old, from a large car supermarket. Car has 12k mileage and a main dealer service last September, all checks out on HPI.  Have noticed that the car was first registered in Sept 22, V5C then issued again in Dec 22.
  • Mitsubishi Colt 1.5 D - Automatic Gearbox Fault reving up for it to engage 2 Aug 2022 (Forum)
Obviosuly, this could cause a problem if he was parked between to cars. Once the car has run for a bit, the gearbox is fine and no issues. I am quite concerned as he is 70 years old so his reaction is not as got as it used to be. The car is booked into the garage next week from where he got it, but I woud like to know if anyone had any suggestions as to what it might be so that he does not get ripped off at the garage.
  • Is it safe to use a jump starter on all cars ? 26 Oct 2017 (Forum)
I do not want one with an internal battery. Whilst I will probably never need to use it on my own cars I do not doubt the opportunity to use it on colleagues cars will arise. I do not expect any of my colleagues would carry their cars hand books with them and I would have reservations about jump starting say for example a year old Toyota Land Cruiser in which case we are probably back to square one and waiting for the breakdown services.
  • Rover 416gsi 1993 - Driving a car thats been stood for a few years 1 Mar 2017 (Forum)
Hello folks,    I recently have been given a 1993 rover 416gsi from an old relative who has given up driving, and as i now need an automatic thought it might be worth a shot. The car has done 66,205 miles and has full service history and has been garaged all its life. The only thought i have had is the car has done barely 400 miles in the last three years and in the last 10 years has not even done 3000 miles.
  • Small car with a big boot 15 Sep 2016 (Forum)
Rather than muddle this with the spare wheel thread, I think it'll be interesting toi take up Engineer Andy's challenge to those of us who enjoy advising on buying a new car. If I've got the message right, Andy, you want something no bigger - ideally smaller - than your Mazda 3 but with plenty of room for luggage.  As you rightly imply, there are a lot of small cars around which can seat a family of four but haven't a hope of taking their luggage if they want to go away in the car.
