Volkswagen - Reason for change of ownership on V5C - James Richard

We are looking to buy a VW GTi, just under 3 years old, from a large car supermarket. Car has 12k mileage and a main dealer service last September, all checks out on HPI.

Have noticed that the car was first registered in Sept 22, V5C then issued again in Dec 22. DVLA issues one previous owner. So, effectively 2 owners to now. Doesn't look like it would be a pre-registration, so does this indicate a fleet car or perhaps lease? Slightly confused over why it might be registered then V5 reissued (to new owner) three months later, any thoughts?

Going to view the car on the weekend but looks clean (supplied without original mats). Car will have balance of 4 months of manufacturer warranty on it, checked in with main dealer and eligible for any warranty claims due to service history.

Any help or advice gratefully received.

Could it have been a dealer demonstrator vehicle?

These normally have to be kept around 3 months before being sold on as nearly new.

Indeed, that's how I bought my Swace. I bought a bargain end of model ex demo with 26 miles on the clock in July 2024 which had been registered end of March 2024. Quite a lot of those 26 miles were on my extensive test drive!

How about it being initially on a personalised number? In any event if the DVLA say two owners etc then that's all it's had.

Might it have been just a change of keeper's name or address ?

Changing keepers name (eg on marriage) or address or changing off/on a private plate does not increase V5 owners. I had to change the V5 when the selling dealer registered my car in a diminutive of my first name. There was no increase in the number of owners when the V5 was reissued.

That. Exactly.

Bought our Skoda Superb in January as one previous owner. Moved it onto the 1951 vintage plate we inherited from Mrs B's Mum and it still says one previous owner.

Looking down the other end our first Berlingo was registered to Mrs B in 2005. After she passed it to me eight years later it became two owners but with zero difference as to it's role, usage and nuts behind the wheel!!

As most vehicles are now sold on main dealer PCPs I'd be asking questions about how it ended up in a car supermarket at less than 3 years old.

Probably a dealer pre-reg to meet a month end target or a demo type vehicle which probably did 6 miles before being sold "used".

Manufacturers use such tricks to shift cars and meet targets all the time.

That would fit with it being an ex-demo car though. Those are more likely bought with cash, as on PCP they don't work out much less per month than a brand new one.

Car supermarkets do re-market decent cars they accept as trade-ins so the owner has probably just upgraded to something bigger and got a better deal at the supermarket than the main dealer.

Given the model, it's unlikely to be an ex-hire car, which is another way cars get two keepers in a relatively short period. I've been in a three month old hire car with over 11500 miles on the clock, and a sticker saying "do not exceed 12000 miles" - the next day I gave it back about 50 miles short of that, much to the hire company's relief as apparently they get charged by their lease company if the mileage is exceeded.

Yup, over the last three decades I've generally done just that. Cash buy for for a heavily discounted ex demo and/or nearly new car and keep for a decade or more! I certainly have a few friends who have done something similar without PCP etc.

However a few people I know seem to be moving to PCH these day.

Pound to a pinch of peppermint it was something to do with sales targets even if a staff member ran it for a few weeks,

TBH if it does what you want at right price etc is the number of keepers a deal breaker?
