  • Turbo idling: when and how? 9 Feb 2010 (Forum)
In fact, the only situation I can think of where i might stop the engine before the turbo has had a chance to cool naturally is at French motorway service area, where it's possible to pull up, nose first, within a minute of travelling at 130 km/h. On these few occasions, I generally remember to let it run for a bit, but it's a tiny fraction of the times I've stopped my car. Does anyone here encounter situations more often where this technique is actually necessary?

  • Ford Fiesta (2009 - ) - Miles per gallon 26 Jan 2010 (Forum)
I thought it might be a problem with the computer itself so I filled up, noted the mileage and set off from Milton Keynes to Bristol and back and a fair bit of running round MK. Filling up again showed that I had achieved 44 mpg which I recon is pretty poor bearing in mind Fords claim. I generally keep within the speed limit, don't accelerate like a nutter and don't run around with a bag of cement in the boot so what's going wrong here?

  • BMW 3-Series E90 (2005 - ) - 05 2.0 small oil leak driving me nuts! 5 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Hi All, I have a 2005 E90 320i - I have had a small oil leak where I can see oil collect on the metal plate that sticks out under the cylinder head, I can also see oil at the back of the cylinder, when I run a tissue around the back. I have had the profile gasket replaced, and the problem went away for about a week , but now its back!? - Small collection of oil on the metal plate an oil on tissue when run around the back of the cylinder head.
  • After 40 years - first NIP 27 Nov 2009 (Forum)
Feel very annoyed with myself - got a NIP for "running" (?) a red light. Apparently I was 1.31 seconds into a red light. remember it well - came towards lights, in a 50 limit, clear road so doing 45 - 50 ish (careful!!! speed cameras also) and as I approached lights changed from green.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 03 2.0 MAF sensor TDCi 17 Nov 2009 (Forum)
Hi I have uneven running when car is cold for the first 200 metres or so. I have had various checks done, and replaced a couple of parts but it is no better, but no worse. Nothing shows up on diagnostics. An article I read suggested cleaning the MAF sensor.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 01 2.0 TDDI engine oil level increasing 2 Sep 2009 (Forum)
The car has been idle for some months, then in the last few months pressed into service with long runs midlands to the lakes and back most weekends (250 miles each way (6K since April)), after changing appropriate oil and filters. During one of the earlier runs a turbo hose blew off, and it was refitted, as a replacement provided by FORD against the serial number/VIN didn't fit.
  • Ford Mondeo II (1996 - 2000) - 98 1.8 PAS Pump Noise. 11 Aug 2009 (Forum)
I assume the increase in pitch under revs is due to the aux belt driving the pump faster. I checked the fluid in case it's a simple case of the pump run dry of fluid - there's not a lot of fluid but there's some so I can't see how the pump can be running dry. I'll top it up to see tomorrow. I haven't physically looked yet and I haven't checked Haynes - am about to do the later, the former will have to wait for the weekend.
  • BMW 3-Series E46 (1998 - 2005) - 02 2.0 Car not starting 7 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Experiencing strange behavior with my 320D. Was running fine until Sunday when I stopped the car. When I came back and tried to start it again no joy. It was turning over but just not starting. My initial reaction was that it must be the battery. I got a set of jump leads and the car started.
  • Peugeot 106 (1991 - 2002) - 99 1.1 Overheats, top hose cold, replaced thermost 9 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Just read about K-Seal - would you recommend using this regardless?? Also air lock possibility? - I've run it for ages with radiator cap off, it just eventually boiled over. I'm at a loss - any ideas? Many thanks.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 98 1.4 cylinder liner disturbed 2 Jun 2009 (Forum)
I was very careful when turning the engine over again to make sure that i held the liners down. I have put everything back together, drained the oil. refillied with oil. CAr strarts o.k. and runs but there is a lot of water still in oil. I have run engine flush in the oil and will drain again today. to see if there is any improvement. Is there any other way of knowing whether i have disturbed the seal in the liner without taking apart again ?
  • Mercedes Benz E-Class W124 (1985 - 2000) - 88 2.6 Disappearing coolant... 13 May 2009 (Forum)
Hi chaps I've recently got myself an old Merc 260E. It's a fine old bus and is running great, however it's losing some coolant - needs a top up every few weeks or so depending on usage Horrible head gasket related thoughts immediately entered my head - it doesn't seem to be showing any other symptoms though.
  • Diesel gear change with DMF in mind 7 May 2009 (Forum)
A big forum post i found say most shift around 2 - 2.2k. I take mine up to 3 - 3.5k but sometimes feel the need to do an economy run. Mine has shift lights that do actually come on at 2k. Usually takes me down to 1.5k for the next gear. This got me thinking, people drive like this all the time, low revs and after reading about DMF failure and someone suggesting lugging from low down puts big stress on the DMF, does it?
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 01 1.8 Serious engine problems 21 Apr 2009 (Forum)

  • Demonstrators 13 Apr 2009 (Forum)
Just rang up a local garage to arrange a test drive only to find the demonstrator I want to try is away for Easter. It seems whoever is running the car is taking a long weekend. I'm sure someone will correct me if I've got this wrong but I thought demonstrators were meant to be available for the public to try, not company cars for the senior salesmen.
  • Ford Mondeo II (1996 - 2000) - 98 1.8td 'Squelching' noise when revving engine. 28 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Hello everyone, I'm new to this site and I've recently bought a '98 Mondeo 1.8TD, it's got 120K on the clock and seems to run well - most of the time. I've just noticed that when going up a nearby steep hill and having dropped to 2nd gear on full throttle, I get some 'stuttering' as if I'm running out of fuel - although I have half a tank.
  • Man maths and cars 27 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Butr what a load of embarassing rubbish. A Hillman Mix super estate with rattling big ends, ugh. Buy new at big discount and then run until the warranty runs out might be another approach. How do backroomers justify their purchases? With the exception of Rattle of course who seems to be more interested in the journey than the arrival - but, hey, that's another option.

  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 01 2.0tddi - no fuel in filter 31 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Ive got a 51 reg 2.0 tddi mondeo estate, the other day while driving it started to splutter and throw out loads of smoke and finaly cut out and would not start again,i had the car towed home and was told it may be fuel filter blocked and may needed changing ,so went bought new filter took old filter off and noticed there was no fuel in it,so before i put the new filter on i filled it with diesel connected everything back up and it started straight away i left it running for 10 mins then i cut out and would not restart so i disconnected the filter again and once more no fuel in it.Could it be the lift pump under the car near the fuel tank and also is there a relay that runs the pump.I know there not cheap is there any way of testing to see if it is the pump.
