  • Vauxhall Vectra C - buying a >3 litre car... scouring autotrader 10 Dec 2013 (Forum)
As you will be aware the site narrows the range of manufacturers for you. Mercedes - overpaying for the badge.  Ditto BMW.  Audis all seem to be quattros, don't think I need it really.  Don't want a 4x4 of any kind.  Don't want a diesel either.  Nearly went for a Phaeton but the repair bills will make me sad.
  • E46 320D Automatic - Automatic gearbox noises 22 May 2013 (Forum)
Hi everyone,    I am posting this as a newby and hope someone out there will be able to assist me with my problem.  I recently aquired an imacculate  2003 E46 320D Auto BMW with 210k kms on the clock. Thanks to posts on this site I managed to sort out the faulty fuel pump relay which seems to plague many of these cars. My other problem is when the gearbox changes from 3rd to 4th gear there is a sort of rumbling / vibrating noise with a slight hesitation.
  • ???? A5 / 5 series size - Motorway Car...advice appreciated 15 Feb 2013 (Forum)
I'll be doing approx 20,000 miles a year and look to keep it for 3ish years. Looking at the likes of VW Passat cc GT, A5, Merc CLK, Lexus IS220d, BMW 5 series or a Jag XF. If anyone can help me in my decision. What models should I be looking at / staying away from. Any common problems? I want general maintenance to be kept as low as possible and would hope for an mpg of aroung 50+.
  • Suzuki Swift SZ4 - Reasons NOT to buy a new Suzuki Swift 2 Feb 2013 (Forum)
3..small boot 4. reliabiity 5 years plus onwards 5. push button engine start (SZ4) is this a weakness that makes this car vulnerable     to theft like certain expensive BMW s ?
  • Jaguar X Type 2.1 2002 - Engine Light on X-Type Jag but car runs fine? 31 Jan 2011 (Forum)
Anyways, I did buy it with the engine light on, I have had a similar thing like this with a VW Bora I had, it was a sensor issue also on a BMW, that was an air bag light.   The Engine light is on, however it seems to be running fine, no misfire, just had a full service, new sparks, filters, fully synth oil etc.. but the light is still on.
  • Citroen Berlingo Multispace - Thinking of trading 2003 petrol Berlingo 4 diesel 27 May 2010 (Forum)
We usually get just over 40mpg from our 1.6 petrol on long trips, which isn't great. I used to have a BMW 525i which regularly gave 35mpg. Thanks for any info.....
  • Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - 06 2.0 Diesel DPF and driving modern diesels 16 Jan 2010 (Forum)
As my next car will probably be a diesel I need some advice. Looking at 1.6 to 2l diesel- Renault clio, Puegot 207, Ford Focus or similar. I would go for the BMW 318 or 320 D but too expensive for my cash purchase. I only do about 15k/annum and I think I may be better off with Petrol. Do they/the car tell you when you NEED to regenerate the DPF, or do you need a regular Italian tune up, which defeats the purpose somewhat.
  • Humph's new motor.... 3 Oct 2009 (Forum)
As some of you will know I've been self employed for donks but I've recently ageed to wage slavery again. The deal included a car or car deal. At first they wanted to give me a BMW X5 3.0 diesel Sport with lots of bells and whistles. Terribly generous and all but the BIK tax would have been ruinous. Circa £7000 p.a. Eek ! Anyway, I looked at car allowances, mileage allowances and so on and it all gets a bit marginal because I will still do a substantial mileage.
  • MINI - Automatics - CVT or Tiptronic? 25 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Or is there only one type of auto transmission, and some advertisers don't know what they're talking about and selected the wrong type of transmission wording? Also, does anyone have any experience of driving automatic Minis (talking about the BMW jobs here, not the old proper Minis)? I like Tiptronic autos, not so sure about CVTs never having driven one. Cheers!
  • Don't know what make this is ! 8 Apr 2009 (Forum)
A lady warden came across a car parked illegally, the car had no badges of identity and she just said, ' I can't ticket this one, I don't know what it is '....it was a BMW 5 series. I don't think she looked at the tax disc. I have wondered ever since, as I sit in my bath-chair and dribble gently into a tissue, if this would be a good 'get-out' to avoid tickets. I then think a little further, suppose I took the two badges off the Jowett stick a chrome 'Electrolux' script or something similar on and position the tax so the make is obscured, would any offence be committed....likewise, take the badges off the Citroen and replace them with another make.

  • Cost of spares --- Like a wiper relay 12 Jan 2009 (Forum)
While in there another person asked for a wiper relay -- I did not manage to hear the make of his car but the spares place deals in five makes of the average type of car, not Mercs or BMW. The man was told it was £55 + vat, and it would need to be ordered, as was my part. Now I know I can buy general purpose relays for just two to three pounds so on an electronics parts web site I looked up an 'automotive relay' that would handle 30 amps and 12 volts (more than enough) and saw they were less than £1+VAT in 1000 off.
  • Nissan Primera (1990 - 1996) - 1997 1.6 Abs Pump? Financial doom :( 4 Dec 2008 (Forum)
And it then happened a few more times, ABS kicking in for no reason but not doing anything to stop the car... had to use the handbreak to prevent knocking a shiny BMW I dont have an ABS light on or anything, the garage says its most likely the ABS pump... which will cost upto £1300 to repair / replace. Do you guys have any suggestions? I am a skint musician who paid £800 for the car itself, so I guess I may have to sell it :( The pumps you can pick up for 80 quid on ebay reconditioned, so why are they so expensive to fit?
  • Car Ventilation 28 Oct 2008 (Forum)
It doesn't seem that long ago that all ventilation systems could do this for you, but I can't find anything available now. That is except a BMW, 3 series and bigger; the 1 series can't do it. Most staff in sale-rooms look at me as if I'm really eccentric (maybe I am) when I ask for this heating option and it has even been suggested that I drive with an open window.
  • Fuel efficiency of older diesel cars 8 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Can I assume that this kind of MPG for a 2.7 litre has something to do with the lighter weight of taxis relative to other cars or is this just an average MPG to be expected even from a big diesel engine in town. Would something like an Audi, or BMW diesel with the same engine size be doing much less than 25 - 30mpg in town?
  • Lexus - When does it make sense to buy new ? 29 Sep 2008 (Forum)
As this offer doesnt apply to part used cars on the forecourt they are almost twisting my arm to buy a new one rather than part used 12/18 mnths old for not alot less. Does anyone else know if other manufacturers ie BMW are making such sweeping price cuts.
  • Truck menaces cyclist 17 Sep 2008 (Forum)
I caught up with the thug at the next traffic light , began berating the moron driving the truck ( he looked the type to usually drive a one headlamp old BMW ) , but he gave me two fingers and screamed off at speed again I noted down his reg - it was liveried and belonging to a well known firm in the soft drinks business - am still seething 3 days - this guy will kill someone.
  • Mercedes Benz ML-Class (2005 - ) - Mercedes ML Range 9 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Also, have the dealers/service centre pulled the same finger out as I can't seem to see many complaints that are recent. I have test driven a BMW 330d M Sport which was very good but I do like thought of the ML and you seem to get much more car for the same money. I am aware ML's/4x4 values are dropping like a stone, but if I can get one REALLY cheap......
  • Repaired on the go 14 Jul 2008 (Forum)
All my neighbours drivers (this is in India ) were baffled by the ease of the job. Expect my door bell to be busy. Why do BMW bother with runflats which last for 300 km after deflation when each dealer is 500 km (if you are lucky) apart out here? Plug and play me says!
  • MINI MINI Cooper and S R56 (2007 - ) - Door Mirrors stolen 15 Nov 2007 (Forum)
A colleague at work has recently had the door mirrors stolen from her Mini Cooper S (BMW want £300 parts only). When she informed the police it was the 11th case that weekend in the area so clearly someone was doing the rounds and no doubt these will appear on ebay or similar. They were removed suprisingly easily and they left no damage to the doors - they did a real good job.
