Citroen Berlingo Multispace - Thinking of trading 2003 petrol Berlingo 4 diesel - eyelight

We've had a 2003 Berlingo Desire 1.6 petrol for almost 2 years now, and overall it's been great. Very reliable. Bought it with 40,000, heading for 60,000 miles now and the recent MOT had a few advisories, not to mention the upcoming cambelt change.

Thinking of trading it for a diesel one, maybe 2005 or 2006 if we can get a good price for ours. Just have a few questions about the diesels.

Is there a whole lot of difference between the 2.0 and the 1.6 HDi engines? In terms of performance and economy. For some reason "Whatcar" recommend the 1.6 and advise against the 2.0.

Is the fuel economy anywhere as good as the published figures? Up to 60mpg for the 1.6. We usually get just over 40mpg from our 1.6 petrol on long trips, which isn't great. I used to have a BMW 525i which regularly gave 35mpg.

Thanks for any info.....

I have a 1.6 HDI Berlingo (07). routine mpg is 50, this is everyday commuting. otherwise 55-60 is easily achievable. A friend has an older berlingo with the 2.0 HDI, he gets 40 mpg. My impression is that performance is slightly better in the 1.6.

Thanks for the info, and the quick reply.

Another question, which I meant to include with my first post, is about air conditioning. My wife thinks the Berlingo gets very hot in summer. Is an A/C equipped car worth looking for? They seem hard to find. I remember reading somewhere that the Berlingo A/C isn't that great.

Thanks

Ours has A/C and although it works fine it isn't the best system in the world. Nice if you can get it but not a disaster if you can't - in my view!

Thanks.

A/C really pushes your MPG down, you can really hear the engine tone change when you engage a/c as the engine takes the strain. I run a 02 1.9 Diesel with a 50 mpg return but it wouldnt pull the skin off a rice pudding.
