  • Would MINI been a success under Rover? 3 Oct 2006 (Forum)
It seems that buying second hand still doesnt water down the MINI ownership and it seems every care and attention has been considered to keep the MINI brand one of the best. Although I believe that MINI could have gone a long way to save MG Rover if BMW had not kept it, I personally dont think the name and values would have been as highly regarded and certainly used values would have been a lot weaker. Would be interested in whether you agree or disagree?
  • Road Wars 20 Aug 2006 (Forum)
They let them drive on. Bravo. Second most obvious was when they pulled over an Asian guy in a blingy BMW with front tyres worn down to the cords. He was given a warning and again, allowed to drive off. I thought that you had to be escorted to a garage or something? So, what stops the police taking more pro-active action against people like this?
  • S-Max to go same way as Signum 23 Jul 2006 (Forum)
Anyway, can anyone see this being a success for Ford, or for the brave first time owner? I expect it will go the same way as the Signum in that the BMW/Merc/Audi badges are more attractive to buyers for their perceived values, so sales will be poor. On the second hand market however, I would expect the S-Max to offer a lot of value for money. If buyers wanted to spend £20k plus on a Ford with some carrying capacity, surely they'd opt for the X type estate?
  • warning lights: crying wolf? 2 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Hi all, My GF's 2000V BMW 318Ci flashed warning lights a couple of days ago (ABS, TC and brake- manual says be cautious, but can keep driving). GF worried- books into local indy for a check tomorrow (sat). Check fluid- all ok.
  • £500 banger... 1 Jun 2006 (Forum)
At the same time, my mileage will drop drastically from around 22,000 to 8,000 as my commute goes from car to train due to the relocation. I have this crazy idea that I should get an old (probably pre-1993) E34 BMW - well just because I can, really. Insurance is an issue but is surprisingly sensible on an older car. Any suggestions as to what I should look for a. in an E34; b. instead of an E34.

  • Help replacing my Mondeo 27 Dec 2005 (Forum)
I started looking at Audi (A4 and A6), VW Passat, Volvo, Saab, Mazda MX6, Honda Accord, Nissan Primera... not too keen on BMW's or Jags, just because of the type of person who normally drives them -(;0) I've got about £10k to spend, if I get a good trade in on the Mondeo and also shift the Shogun - I've been looking at Diesels for fuel economy, performance isn't too important although I've always loved the V6 sound -(:0).

  • Supermarket Fuel - Quality? 25 Sep 2005 (Forum)
I have read recently that certain BMW engines (manufactured in the 90's) were the subject of a recall to prevent possible damage due to high sulphur content 'mainly in low quality supermarket unleaded' Is supermarket fuel really any different in quality to branded fuel - I do recall hearing this claim many years ago when the supermarkets started selling fuel and were undercutting local garages but is this still the case.
  • Germanic styling 29 Jun 2005 (Forum)
A recent thread about the new 3 series discussed the latest BMW styling, I posted to say how the 5 Series, Z4 etc has grown on me. I had been thinking that the previous 5 would be a bit of a modern classic due to the controversy over the new one however today I saw a couple of new 5's and an 02 plate 530d in short order which made the older car look very dated.
  • Dream car revisited 6 May 2005 (Forum)
Subaru Outback 3.0R until someone in Europe makes a slightly raised (not SUV) superb handling (not SUV) grand tourer with room for five. As I've said before, when Volvo, Merc, BMW etc make a prestige MPV with all the driving qualities they are known for but do not include in their SUVs then I may consider one...until then hello Fuji Heavy Industries. -- Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?
  • 60mile commute to work 8 Apr 2005 (Forum)
I can't decide on whether to take a company car or use my own. I can get a pretty decent car (golf GTI, bmw 3 series) from the company for about £420/month (ie including tax, loss of allowance, etc). Or I could drive my current car (5yr old Golf GTI), but am loath to put 15k extra miles on it a year and suffer the extra depreciation.
  • Beware of the Hun in the Sun 9 Sep 2004 (Forum)

OK mate if you are reading this think on. If all you can see in your rear view mirror is sun anybody looking towards you might just have trouble seeing.
  • Help appreciated on selecting new car 7 Sep 2004 (Forum)
Can live without an Estate and am considering a Volvo S60 D5 Diesel for good performance and fairly low Co2 emmisions but what else would people recommend for my budget of £14-16,000? Want 03 reg to be as old as it gets, ruling out BMW's - any suggestions? Co2 / list price new and budget all important. SAAB 9-5 2.2TiD Estate maybe? Good suggestions as to where to source, i.e: not main dealer, not car supermarket appreciated! Cheers!
  • Any decent car magazines?! 20 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Is it me or are there not really any good car mags anymore?! Autocar has turned into one big BMW advert. CAR is full of lovely pictures - lots of waffle though. Auto Express is just an info source with no real journalism and rates the power of cars in the 'european' way of rating power! gimme it in BHP!
  • used car for 8K 27 Jun 2004 (Forum)
He is not at all keen on Modeao, 406, Vectra etc etc...my, at 8-9k he could buy a used high ,mileage Audi A6 or BMW 525, but in my opinion if anything major was to fail then it could cost dearly. I have also suggested to him a tdi vw passat available for 6-7k or Accord for 5k and pocket the spare cash. He wants car that has reasonable running costs.
  • Damage to door 19 Jun 2004 (Forum)
No.1: (Rover Main dealer): new door skin. No.2 (large bodyshop linked to Nissan/Rover/VW dealer: repair to dents only. No.3 (independant BMW Garage which does bodywork for all makes): new door! The door now has uneven gaps around the edges. I have no prices yet. Can I push for a new door, or will the other insurance company try to go with the cheapest option?
  • Buying a bike 13 Jun 2004 (Forum)
I know there are few bikers out there, and I'd welcome their thoughts on what to buy for general commuting (50 miles/day max) and occasional fun. I have a full licence, also an old R80 BMW, but it's becoming rather high maintenance, and I'd like something lighter with brakes that work! I'm not ruling anything out (except perhaps scooters), but there seems to be huge void between 125's and 600's, with the exception of one or two 500's.
  • Mondeo 2.2 ST-D 11 Jun 2004 (Forum)
In the car-by-car breakdown, HJ notes the new Mondeo "153bhp ST TDCI from May 2004, gets to 60 in 8.4 seconds". That's almost as quick as my current BMW 330d! I know they showed this car at the motorshow, and the press release at the time said first deliveries from August. I've already decided on a Mondeo. If the lease prices are right, I'll wait for this over the 130PS version, but I can't find out anything!
