SWMBO's new car - pass the Prozac 1 Nov 2004 (Forum)
- it must be smaller than the A6 (easy); - it must not be an Audi or a VW, neither of us likes the new A3 or the A4 and the local dealer has been useless of late; - it must be petrol, she only does 6000 miles a year and has hated the various diesels we have owned / been loaned; - it must not be a BMW; - it must not be a Citroen, a salesman at the local dealer was rude to her dad; - it must have climate control; - it must not have leather seats; - it must have 5 doors; - it must be as comfortable and "high quality" as the A6; - it must not be a 4x4; It will take months won't it? -
Berlingo reliability. 22 Jun 2004 (Forum)
A taxi driver we know owns a Citroen Berlingo diesel. IIRC it's an 02 plate and has done about 50-60k. According to him it's been a nightmare for poor reliability from day one with various annoying problems ranging from a dodgy sliding door catch which never seems to work properly to a broken cam belt which happened last year and was repaired under warranty. -
Help in identifying Postman Pat\'s van 6 Dec 2003 (Forum)
The bonnet was short, rather low and had a pronounced curve, almost like that of a 2CV but starting lower down. It was white in colour, but the bars were bright yellow. Similar in appearance to a Citroen Berlingo, but closer to the Ford Courier in size. Her initial thoughts were that it was likely to be an electric or hybrid vehicle. Any takers? -
Worthy reminder 31 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Went to see it - sellers girlfriend has just had a baby, girlfriend is 21 so insurance is too dear etc etc. Service history for the last year, receipts from local Citroen dealer etc. After a lunch-long discussion on it, I managed to persuade him to get an HPI check - turns out that it was a total write off in Aug 2002!!! Not sure of the class of write off etc but there was absolutely no hint given from the seller, even though he was asked, of its past. -

New Mondeo TDci auto 6 Mar 2003 (Forum)
Still, it's impressive that auto diesels are becoming popular again - 10 years ago only Peugeot and Citroen offered them on non-prestige cars, if I recall correctly. -
Cheap estate car - opinions please? 30 May 2002 (Forum)
I'm not really worried about whether it is manual or diesel, economy isn't a huge issue, but I want a manual rather than an auto. Engine size should be 1.6 or above. I have some options I'm looking at: Citroen BX >87 - can be had from about £200. Volkswagen Passat estate >85 - can be had from about £100. Volvo 240 Estate >84 - can be had from about £300 Have also considered Carlton, Renault 21, Sierra etc etc Anyone have any opinions on any of these cars, or any I should look at also? -
Semi-busted Xantia cooling fan 1 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Hi all, Having now worked out why the coolant temp was fluctuating so much, it appears the retaining screw that holds the blades onto the left motor has done a runner, hence the blades have now fallen off (but are thankfully trapped between the grill/bumper and motor). Must have been off for a week or two by now! Do any of the citroen gurus, or anyone else out there know what size the retaining screw is? (I won't have time to dismantle it until the w/e to look at the other, and it doesn't look like the easiest job to remove the assembly in restricted space with grill removed) Hopefully it isn't just the head of the screw that is missing, the rest still in situ :-( The second fan appears to be working properly so the temp is kept to reasonable levels at the moment, but with the air-con on and working the engine hard, the temp does rise quite rapidly (but still won't hit 90 in normal driving). -
Xantia heater slow to warm up 26 Nov 2001 (Forum)
I've got a Citroen Xantia HDi (110bhp) turbo diesel. When the weather's cold, I've noticed it's very slow to heat up. I'm having the thermostat checked out in a week or so, but meanwhile wondered if anyone else had a similar problem. -
Xantia Estate : Brake Squealing 16 Nov 2001 (Forum)
as it's really starting to get on my nerves now. Chad.R P.S. The garage that did the work are Independent Citroen specialists I have never had a problem with them, they have said they will investigate and remedy this free of charge, I just haven't had a free day to take the Xantia back. -
Brakes or no brakes 18 Jul 2001 (Forum)
Madame's Singer Chamois (Hillman Imp) did let go the front to rear brake pipe years ago when I was driving, but I managed to stop without incident on the handbrake, and I have had a front to rear pipe go in an old Citroen CX (dashboard lit up like a fairground, hydraulic pump chattered away, gallon of green fluid on the road) but it still stopped on the footbrake. Any comments, ladies & gentlemen? -

The mrs wants a car 11 Jan 2021 (Forum)
Er indoors, has decided she needs a little runaround, something small, now obviously with all the lockdown business it won’t be anytime soon, so I’d thought I’d ask on here what you guys think, the budget should be around 3k, I say should cos she’s paying, but cheaper would be better, mileage will be low as it would be mainly used as an urban runaround so no motorway use, and it goes without saying, petrol not diesel, so she likes suzuki splash, or the Vauxhall agila, not sure what the difference is apart from the badge ayago, Citroen , Peugeot, I know these are identical cars but which one, now she wants as new as possible ( given her budget) so I know the swift would be recommended, but the few we’ve seen on auto trader are probably a bit long in the tooth for her, now the final bit...reliability, which of these would be the most reliable in your opinion? -
Vauxhall Ampera - Worth a punt ? 20 Jan 2020 (Forum)
Although I'll make savings by using the SUV less I can't fund any sort of second vehicle on them so I know I'm going to spend more but to keep the cost down I'm looking at 2012 (ish) cars which are now out of their extended warranty so I'd like the Backroomer's views on the risks involved. Two specific cars have caught my eye - the Mitsubishi i-MIEV/Peugeot Ion/Citroen C-Zero and the Vauxhall Ampera/Chevrolet Volt - I'd welcome opinions on these bearing in mind they're 8 years old and out of warranty. I also considered the Renault Zoe but at this age, they all need a leased battery which puts the cost up way too high. -
9649846780 Alternator help (C4 GRAND PICASSO) 28 Jun 2019 (Forum)
Hi all. First time posting here so hopefully I can get the answers I need. I have an alternator from a citroen c4 grand picasso with a manufactures number of 9649846780 (150a). My question relates to the electrical connections to this unit. I understand the alternator(-) is connected via the physical bolt connection to the engine and the alternators (+ to battery) is via the large nut/bolt under the plug connection on the alternator ref (B+). -
Berlingo Gearbox Whine & Wear - Berlingo Gearbox Whine & Wear 7 Mar 2016 (Forum)
Ok all, need a bit of info... My Citroen Berlingo Multispace 2010 1.6HDi has just been in for a new clutch (high biting point and bit of slippage, nothing major, but get it done before it fails completely!) Has come out the garage, and it now has a gearbox whine in 1st-5th, and its very hard to get into the gears with clutch fully depressed. -
Fuels and their money - advice from HJ 19 Jan 2016 (Forum)
However, on our local radio station a so-called expert stated that using the higher grade of petrol was only beneficial to those with high performance cars and would be a waste of money in a standard everyday car. I have been filling up alternatively with the standard and higher grades in my Citroen which has yet to reach 70,000 miles. Your opinion would be appreciated. NG, Gosport The man on your local radio station was living in the past. -
Car after Motability 12 Jan 2016 (Forum)
I have narrowed down the following: Peugeot 308 (although quite fancy a change). Citroen C4 Ford Focus Toyota Auris Also, I know that Motability do not allow a driver to build up a no claims bonus, however, would they be willing to give me a breakdown of my driving history to take to my new insurers? -
Dream car? 4 Jan 2016 (Forum)
If I got a 'better' car it would: use more fuel cost more to insure and service take longer to wash due to its size be harder to get in and out of (in car parks) due to its size have more things to go wrong My car's a Citroen C1 (1.0) and I think I'll stick with it. What's your dream car? Is it something fast, something economical, or something else? Maybe you already own your dream car?
