Car after Motability - Glasgow26

Hi there

At the moment, I drive a Peugeot 308 (new model - 14 plate) on Motability; my brother is disabled and I'm the nominated driver. However, very soon my brother will be going into long term care and I will have to hand back the Motability car. I would be looking for a similar sized car to the Peugeot 308 and would prefer zero or very little road tax. I would also like a boot size comparable to the Peugeot 308 as I will be taking my brother out on day trips in the car and will need a reasonable sized boot for his wheelchair. I've been on various websites and will probably go for a pre-registered car. I have narrowed down the following:

Peugeot 308 (although quite fancy a change).

Citroen C4

Ford Focus

Toyota Auris

Also, I know that Motability do not allow a driver to build up a no claims bonus, however, would they be willing to give me a breakdown of my driving history to take to my new insurers?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Why the focus on VED?

Even at the top end, £500+ a year, it's peanuts compared with finance/depreciation on a newish car.

I agree with Bromptonaut: I suggest you give priority to (a) what your brother will be most easily able to get in and out of; and (b) a big enough boot without a lip (i.e. with the floor level with the bottom of the boot opening).

I would think a Citroen Berlingo or the equivalent Peugeot would be ideal - or the C3 Picasso or Skoda Roomster if the Berlingo is too basic. A VW Golf SV is more upmarket but a lot more expensive.

Good luck!

On the insurance claim record point, in absence of experience here, OP just needs to call Motability helpline.

Experienced drivers with no personal NCD are ten a penny albeit perhaps mostly women pushed into main driver role by death/illness. Insurers will provide 'starter' or other discounts for this market - OP just needs to shop about a bit.

Another thought, would Motability entertain an offer for the existing car?

Indeed - many insurers offer introductory "NCD" bonuses where drivers have been a named driver on someone else's policy - spouse, employer, Motability, etc
