Xantia Estate : Brake Squealing - Chad R
I have a 1.9TD Xantia Estate (1996/N) which has done 126K miles without any major problems.

I recently had a major service done where the front brake pads where renewed and the rear brake discs and pads where renewed. Since then there seems to be a very loud squealing noise every time I press the brakes. This doesn't matter whether the pedal pressure is light or heavy the noise only increases. Sometimes it's not unlike some buses that you often hear "grinding" to a halt at stops and it is that loud. It doesn't seem to affect the brakes themselves as they are as sharp and sure as ever.

Any ideas or cures ? as it's really starting to get on my nerves now.

P.S. The garage that did the work are Independent Citroen specialists I have never had a problem with them, they have said they will investigate and remedy this free of charge, I just haven't had a free day to take the Xantia back.

Chad,
'Squealing' and 'grinding' are quite different, and have different causes, which do you have?

The brakes are squealing not "grinding" - I was referring to the noise that some /Buses make when coming to a halt when I said grinding.

Hi, seem to remember a lot of chat on this subject, main cause seems to be using non standard pads as apposed to genuine Citroen ones. For some stange reason Citroen ones don't squeal. Have a look at the anti rattle/squeal shims to make sure they are fitted correctly. In addition put a thin coat smear of copper slip on the back of each pad. Also check that the brakes are are not sticking on and that the handbrake for the front wheels is correctly adjusted.Try the following sites for info:-
www.kolumbus.com that takes you to xantia world, check current chat, then check archives.Try also www.andyspares.com and join their forum, plenty of info, and lastly try the BX ctiroen home page. Good luck, Mike

Chad,

As Mike says there has been talk about squealing brakes on Xantias (others as well) after a pad change. Often it is blamed on non-Citroen pads. It is possible for a certain disc/pad combination to set up a squeal that is a pig to cure and sometimes another set of pads may be the answer. In fact a change to any other make, not just Citroen OE may prove effective.

However your PS says it all. No point in worrying until the garage have had a chance to recheck the fittment, perhaps double checking all the sliding surfaces are free and copa-slip coated plus a good dollop of copa-slip on the rear of the pads.

I had front brakes squealing. Putting that copper compound on the back of the discs and replacing the crumbling anti-vibration clips cured it.

I hope you mean you put copper compound on the pads, not the discs!
