    It's a small, two seater polythene-plastic bodied car 9ft 10 ins long (2,990mm) first seen at 1999 Frankfurt Motor Show. Reaches 30mph in 7 seconds and has a top speed of 56mph. Power is from 19 NiCd batteries and range is 53 miles. Fully recharging takes around 8 hours and costs 38p; 80% recharging 4 to 6 hours. Has a drivers airbag and aquitted itself well in US crash tests. Free parking in some London boroughs and free recharging at special sites in Westminster.

    Despite running on a new platform, the 1.8-litre hybrid system is carried over from the outgoing Prius, albeit revised to improve economy. The built in electric motor has been downsized and there is a new battery system, which helps maximise load capacity.   Toyota promises improvements to economy and lower emissions than ever before, but so far there are no solid figures.
