  • Litres Per Hour / Gallons Per Hour 12 Sep 2008 (Forum)
On another thread [what constitutes a gas-guzzler - why not a petrol-pumper or fuel-folly] there's lots of discussion about mpg in town, out of town etc. Given mileages in town, especially London, bear no historic link to time spent travelling, why not refer to consumption as litres per hour, or for many here, gallons per hour?
  • Vauxhall Corsa B (1993 - 2000) - 1999 1.5 diesel. Difficulty starting when cold 14 Aug 2008 (Forum)

  • Old petrol disposal? 22 May 2008 (Forum)
Appreciate outboards are a long way off topic but wondering if it's worth starting/attempting to run engine with this fuel? Believe it can lead to alls sorts of running problems! As a compromise i could put another 6 litres of fresh petrol into tank and give it a good mix! Any guidance appreciated Thanks Mark
  • True costs of a loaded' car? 24 Mar 2008 (Forum)
With the current cost of petrol and the VED changes in the budget everybody is talking about fuel consumption and emissions. These days most cars come with all the extras (PAS, A/C, e/w, etc.) which add weight and increase fuel consumption. Has anyone ever worked out the cost of these on a per annum or lifetime basis?
  • Driving In Snow 4 Feb 2008 (Forum)
For those who have to drive long distances in this foul weather it is advisable to have the following in the car :- spare coat, blanket, fully charged mobile phone, a shovel, water, chocolate bars etc in case if you get stuck in the snow and can't get help immediate help. I have only listed few things. Also advice having a tank full of fuel in case you have to have the engine running for heat. If there are several stranded then it makes sense for all to get into one car and use the fuel of one car. I case anyone complains your health well being is more important than the environment when you are sitting there stuck with the engine running
  • Effect of speed on emissions 13 Jan 2008 (Forum)
A development of the "Effect of Speed on economy" thread, though a different point: This is a little simplistic and does not account for appropriate gears etc however an engine does not run at it's most efficient at very low revs, i.e low road speeds, therefore while increased drag and rolling resistance will generally cause it to consume more fuel at higher road speeds the engine is likely to be operating nearer peak efficiency at higher road speeds and therefore will be more effectively burning the fuel it is using and thus be emitting much less in the way of hydrocarbons albeit while producing a little more in the way of CO2.
  • Taxation of Veggie Oil. 10 Dec 2007 (Forum)
    >> Apparantly the law has been relaxed on the use of veg oil as a fuel. >> You can use upto 2500 litres without paying duty. That's a common misconception and not correct. Producers of "fiscal quality bio-diesel" are exempt from paying duty on production of less than 2500lts a year for their own use.

  • 306HDI intermittent starting 28 Dec 2006 (Forum)
my 306 has an intemittent starting problem, from cold it starts no probs it seems to be when the engine has warmed up and left for 5mins to sometimes a couple of hours, when trying to start it will not fire and takes anything up to 6 tries to start. a few months ago i had a new "universal " relay fitted as the car failed to start at all and the fault was traced to no power feed to the fuel pump.the fault has only recently come about, i took it to my local sparks and he found nothing, plugged into test, road tested, nothing. brought it home and left in drive for 5 mins, NO start!!. could it be the fuel filter?
  • Renault Megane: petrol in diesel engine 4 Dec 2006 (Forum)
The dealership recovered the car and it turned out they had filled it with petrol not diesel. They've drained the tank & fuel system etc and claim it will be okay: I'm not convinced. Any advice - I assume that it will have been running hot on a lower viscosity fuel. Piston rings and valve seats could be damaged. I've also heard petrol can degrade the seals used in diesel cars and diesel is often used to lubricate components due to its greater viscosity.

  • Yaris Diesel 28 Jun 2006 (Forum)
The fuel consumption on my wife's diesel yaris has always been disappointing giving about 52 mpg urban or about 58mpg at 75mph on the motorway , much less than Toyota's promises or other owners experiences.
  • How much is it worth? 5 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Right, well, I've finally been forced off the road due to fuel prices, road tax, and insurance so I'm planning to sell the car. This year's lowest insurance quote is still circa ~1500 pounds, plus 200 pounds tax and fuel. I reckon that if I'm going to spending nearly 2500 pounds a year it's easier to hire a car as and when I need it and use a removals company to get my stuff to and from uni.
  • Ford fiesta Bioethanol conversion 27 Apr 2006 (Forum)
Hi, I've been reading up about bioethanol and there seems to be some confusion about what is required to convert a standard fuel-injected petrol car to run on 85% bioethanol. As far as i can tell the main thing is to replace any natural rubber seals/pipes in the fuel system with synthetic rubber equivalents. It also seems that some modification to the injector pulse widths is necessary, but i'm unsure as to whether this would be dealt with automatically by the closed-loop control of the engine management?
