  • Primera - Persistent Engine Fault 29 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Can anyone please help me with this intractable problem?: On morning start-up, my 1997 Primera (SLX 2.0i Automatic)stalls sharply when Drive or Reverse is engaged at the initial idling revs of 1400, and will not engage until the revs have decayed to under about 900, which takes about 5 minutes. Once engaged the revs tend to 'hunt' a little at first, and the engine judders under braking for the first mile or so.
  • Replacement Motorway Mile Muncher 28 Nov 2003 (Forum)
I pulled onto the hard shoulder as did the car I was pushed into but the white van drove off before I could note its number so it looks like I will have to claim on my insurance. Does the driver I was pushed into automatically claim on my insurance or is he also out of luck as the van that caused the accident got away? I would also welcome suggestions for a replacement vehicle. It has to be: - a very low insurance group as this is my second claim in two years
  • C5 'parking' wing mirrors 8 Sep 2003 (Forum)
After printing out the last reply I got on here it got my dealer thinking in the right direction and he actually did manage to improve the dodgy pickup and the rough downshift on my ?03 C5 auto. Unfortunately he left the settings of the automatic ?parking? wing mirrors in a state. They don?t now swing 90 deg. in to the body on remote locking, or if they do it?s hit and miss. Neither does the passenger side mirror swing down on reversing anymore.
  • renault clio dti erratic acceleration 6 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Any medium to heavy pressure on the accelerator results in increased revs and engine noise but doesn\'t translate into speed. Almost like a cranky old automatic - you know when your\'re waiting for the gear to engage and set off. Easing off the accelerator drops the engine noise several decibels. This most occurs accelerating in 4th abd 5th between 50 to 70 mph.
  • Low mileage bmw compact - advice 15 Apr 2003 (Forum)
I recently bought a 19,000 mile 5 year old 318ti automatic from a little old lady. It's now done 23k and is loosening up nicely! it was serviced by BMW before I bought it and due to it's age they changed the brake fluid, coolant, and plugs along with the oil.
  • Which Civic Auto? 16 Mar 2003 (Forum)
The car will be used mainly for school runs, and local driving with the occasional motorway trip and cover approx 8 - 10k miles a year. It must have 5 doors and be automatic and be Focus /Astra size. Is there anything else I should consider? SWMBO does not like the Astra, I consider the Golf overpriced, and have never liked Ford autoboxes - and I wouldn\'t touch anything French or Italian.
  • To Trevor P - HPC 19 Dec 2002 (Forum)
Hi Trevor, Did the full stage 3 with John yesterday including Millbrook - have you any suggestions on cleaning leather passenger seats? He took my X to 130 on the big circle (changed from 4 to 5 at 110 on my automatic box) and took hands off the wheel - I chickened out at around 115 when it was my turn. My track session was not impressive - I could not get the right hand apex correct at three feet past the third marker - having a very patient test driver lapping me did not help.
  • Shortlist opinions? 5 Dec 2002 (Forum)
I hope to change car in the next week or so, and have finally whittled the choice down to the following (in no particular order): Volvo S80 2.4 SE (170 BHP) Mercedes-Benz E240 Elegance Saab 9-5 2.0/2.3 SE B** 523i SE Requirements are: peaceful cruising down busy dual-carriageways, good safety, and automatic transmission. Fuel consumption, driving dynamics and 'image' are relatively unimportant. Having said that, I can't quite manage to spell out the 523's manufacturer; so some aspects of 'image' may well rule out a begrudgingly-good car!!
  • Road tax/insurance on cost of fuel ? 1 Nov 2002 (Forum)
It seems to me that doing so would preclude tax avoidance and ensure that any innocent parties involved in motoring related accidents would have automatic cover and not have to chase people with no assets. Although not all foreign drivers have to buy fuel when they visit the UK, any that do would also be contributing in some small way. Of course there would need to be some form of body to administer the insurance fund aspect but I don't see this as a major problem and perhaps those at the DVLA could spend their time ensuring the proper ownership registration of vehicles.

  • the world of 1984 comes closer 20 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Moving violations this includs the story about the chap who found a surprise "addon" to his car rental bill. " Last summer, a New Haven, Conn., resident had $450 automatically deducted from his bank account for speeding in a GPS-equipped rental car" As I recall the rental firm in question had in the fine print a section detailing charges for speeding and it used the gps nav system provided in its cars to calculate said charges...
  • Imported Golf V5 6 Mar 2002 (Forum)
They expect a four week wait for delivery and quote around a 3 grand saving on the UK list price. The specification quoted is as per the UK but doesn't have the automatic windscreen wipers (which I can live without), fitted CD / radio unit or alarm (but does have the immobiliser). They will upgrade the warranty to three years from the basic manufacturer warranty for 500 quid.

  • changing cars 5 Jan 2001 (Forum)
Hi For the last seven years I have been driving a Montego 2000 automatic. Yes I know, I've heard all the jokes, but it's got bags of room & does what I tell it. It's time to change though. I need something similar in size. I'm over 6ft. & have Parkinson's Disease, so it has to be a large, lazy & comfortable car.
  • Peugeot 206 lx 1.4 automatic 2001 - Diagnostics Fault? Gearbox problem? 3 Jan 2013 (Forum)
In september 2012, I bought a 2001 peugeuot 206 lx 1.4 automatic, from a private dealer with no warranty and after a couple of weeks I noticed that there was always a strong burning smell coming from the bonnet, although it never felt that it got too hot and i couldnt really tell where exactly it was coming from, also when i was driving for the first little while the car over revs, to about 40,000 but only sits on about 30mph (it would prob rev more but the noise worries me and i ease my foot off accelerator) then the car will make a clunk noise n jolt forward slightly, that will happen 3/4 times and then do it one time massively, the car will then make 3 beeps with no lights flashing and then drive normally.

  • Volkswagen Golf V estate (2007 - ) - 10,000 mile report 18 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Excellent front seats, with all the adjustments you could need - the steering wheel also adjusts both ways so if you can't get comfortable it's something you ate. Good precise gearchange: I miss an automatic less than I thought I would. I could have had DSG, but the Mercedes drone put me off 4-cylinder diesel automatics, possibly for life. Touching wood, nothing whatsoever has gone wrong or fallen off.
