  • Can you drive an electric van above 3500kg with a normal licence? 21 Aug 2018 (News)
Basically, the new legislation applies to vans that are not powered by petrol or diesel and weigh between 3500 and 4250kg. The point is that the batteries that power electric vehicles are heavy, so it’s often difficult for manufacturers to fit them to LCVs and keep the weight beneath the traditional 3500kg level. They also need to factor in an acceptable amount of weight allowance for carrying cargo.

  • The MoT Files: Why the test is so important 6 May 2014 (News)
In modern times, the test continued to evolve as cars became more complex. So, in 2012, tougher ABS checks were added, as were inspections of secondary restraint systems, battery and wiring, stability control systems, speedometers and steering locks. The system is now fully computerised and online - so the stamped certificate is less important than it used to be, as MoT status can be checked instantly via a connected computer.  There's no question that roads are safer as a result of their introduction and, as well as that, air quality benefits from the annual appraisal of all eligible cars' emissions systems has also made a huge impact.

  • Honest John's Motoring Agony Column 16-5-2015 16 May 2015 (News)
Dim, son I have a 2003 Jaguar XJ8 with 70k miles and in mint condition. I love it and don't want to sell because it's got years left in it. My problem is that the battery keeps going flat. It's a new battery (December) and I've checked it's not defective. The alternator is OK. There must be a drain somewhere, but two auto electricians have failed to find it.  FA, via email Most likely to be the dimmer switch for the interior light.
  • Campervanning: Is winter the new summer? 17 Mar 2015 (News)
Alas, our site (which only opened to the public in June 2014) didn’t yet have its electric hookup (it’s coming early 2016), so we were forced to use the California on its interior battery, and bottled water. No big deal. Now, if you have children, you’ll know that being in a confined space with them can become quite ‘challenging’, to use the most pleasant available euphemism, within a matter of minutes.

  • BMW cuts model range as new WLTP test looms 20 Mar 2018 (News)
Plug-in hybrid and range extender vehicles have traditionally produced extremely high official fuel economy figures under the current NEDC test – often well in excess of 100mpg – and are known for failing to reproduce such figures when driven in a realistic environment, unless the batteries are charged very frequently. The WLTP test could therefore have a detrimental effect on the official fuel economy and emissions figures of such models. Though it has pledged to continue selling hybrid and plug-in hybrid cars, fellow premium German manufacturer Porsche axed all existing diesel models in February, blaming a lack of demand.
