    Underneath, Peugeot engineers have employed a new type of double wishbone strut type suspension at the front and very compact multi-arm inclined spring rear suspension supported by an aluminium crossmember.   • First Official Pix of New Astra 15 Jul 2003 (News)
    Standard Astra transmission will be a five-speed manual with optional Easytronic electric clutch manual or a full torque converter automatic. An option on the quicker models will be adaptive ‘Interactive Driving System’ with ‘Continuous Damping Control’ (IDS with CDC, if you can be bothered to remember). The system is connected by three Controller Area Network BUS (CANBUS) systems to the dampers react in real time to variations in the road service or driver inputs.

    Effective immediately and covering vehicles registered by 31 December, 2002, the savings affect every model in the All-Wheel-Drive Impreza range and are available through participating Subaru dealers. The initiative is to allow an orderly clearance of stock prior to the introduction of the much prettier facelifted Impreza which goes on sale in February 2003.
  • New Toyota Land Cruiser 1 Sep 2002 (News)
    The diesel gets to 60mph in 13 seconds, top speed 103mph and the petrol in 9.2 sconds, top speed 112mph, Both manual and automatic transmissions will be offered. The powertrain includes permanent four-wheel drive with a new Torsen limited slip centre differential, electronic Hill Start Control and electronic Downhill Assist Control. Suspension is Toyota’s TEMS electrically modulated semi-active system with optional rear air suspension.

    All have 5-speed manual gearboxes with the option of Mitsubishis’ INVECS-II 4-speed automatic with the 1.6 litre petrol engine. I can confirm that the new DI-D drives really well with plenty of punch from its Mitsubishi modified Renault engine and good handling for an MPV. The other advantages of the Space Star over other smaller MPVs remain its compact exterior dimensions of 13’ 3” long by 5’ 8 “ wide, light controls, a cargo capacity of 1,370 litres and the fact that the seats can be folded to make a double bed.

    Weight distribution is a perfect 50:50 front to rear. Belts are now full harness. And the seats offer more side support for spirited driving. No official performance figures are yet available, but expect a top speed of over 200mph, a 0-60 of less than ten seconds, fuel consumption of 10 – 15mph and correspondingly high CO2 emissions.

    The consumer motoring website analysed 100,000 Real MPG submissions from readers and found that fewer than two out of every 10 cars achieved advertised MPG and CO2 figures in everyday driving. The 10 million tonne spike in CO2 is the equivalent to an additional 5.4 million new cars on Britain’s roads - which is the same as the emissions from every new car registered in 2014 and 2015 combined.
