Generally reliable motor but look out for gearbox bearer issues!

Had a Corolla some years ago and was impressed so decided to get one again as a 2nd runaround this time. Immediately had issues with grinding noise from gearbox when engine under load which turned out to be bearings that were shot. Originally seemed typical of thrust bearing but was actually the bearings in the gearbox itself. Unfortunately cost me just over £500 to strip gearbox down and replace although did get new clutch for free out of it. Informed by gearbox specialist a common fault on Toyota Corolla, Honda Jazz etc. so thought I'd put it on here so anyone else with similar issues can possibly diagnose quicker!
