quite a boring drive, which I knew form reviews, but poorly built, which was a surprise

I gave up on my four year old Auris yesterday, when the key broke in two. I also cancelled the appointment to test drive a new Corolla. I can't bear the thought of another troublesome Toyota, though friend's praise for their endlessly reliable cars brought me to the brand in the first place. On reflection they generally own older models. Maybe the niggles I experienced are in new cars. Or maybe just mine ? I have driven 120000 km in the Auris and had it serviced by a Toyota dealer religiously every 15,000 km. Nonetheless issues kept arising, which I have never had in other cars. Examples are tears in the driver seat fabric, the aforementioned broken key, the seat belt sensor failed twice, an issue with the accelerator. The general wear and tear issues such as brakes I discount as normal. But it has meant that between normal wear and tear, and visits for specific issues, I have spent a lot, in both time and money, in the garage. It seems to me that there are build issues. My Honda got to 300.000 km with the upholstery in perfect nick, for example. For me the auris has not been an enjoyable or relaxing car to own, though it is the first car I ever bought new, and get serviced exclusively in main dealers. Disappointing, because I thought a very reliable Toyota was the answer when I needed a car in which to drive my disabled mother. I went to two Toyota dealers over the four years and while the second one was pleasanter and helpful, both had a dismissive attitude to the idea that a Toyota could have flaws.
