  • Vauxhall Omega (1994 - 2003) - 97 2.5V6 - new head gasket - now poor MPG 4 Mar 2008 (Forum)
What we do have is MPG prior to repair of 27ish, now lucky to get 21!! I have been using climate control & max heating/lights during the journey of 30miles, each way, daily, in darkness, so expect some increase in consumption. But on a run from filling up in Luton, resetting the computer readings & straight onto M1, to start of motorway, daytime, no delays, max 6omph & no heating used, it still only got 23mpg.
  • Punto emissions 5 Jun 2007 (Forum)

  • '2nd Car' insurance 21 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Hi backroomers, can anyone offer any suggestions? Until 2 1/2 years ago, we had always had 2 cars. At that time we had max NCD on both policies. We still have max NCD on our current car. We are now buying a 2nd car again. Our insurace company says that we will have to start with 0% NCD on this '2nd car'. As a reult, the quote was twice what I had expected.
  • Oil Consumption - Volvo V70 2.5 20v 13 Jan 2004 (Forum)
At first I thought the servicing garage had underfilled it, but the problem persists and I calculate that I am losing or using about 1 litre per 1000 miles (the dipstick goes from max to below min in 4-5000 miles and the max/min gap is 4 litres). Can anyone offer any advice before I send it into the garage and a possibly long and expensive search for the problem? The car exhibits no other problems that I can see.
  • New Mondeo as towcar - GrahamM 15 Feb 2003 (Forum)
I'm thinking of buying a used new model Mondeo LX 2.0 or 1.8 hatch or possibly estate to replace our 1994 1.8 petrol (I'd like a TDCi but it's beyond my budget and any way I'm a bit put off by the starting and other problems highlighted in this forum). We tow a small caravan, max permitted weight 1050kg, which is only 75% of the petrol models' kerbweight, but I'm a bit worried about the relatively (4500) high rpm at which max torque is developed in these engines, though I don't know what the actual torque curves look like.

  • Optimum diesel economy 20 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Given that a diesel engine gives max torque around 2000rpm, is it more economical to use 4th gear for cruising at 40-50 (e.g. on a speed limited road) than 5th, where the engine is only doing 1500-1600 ? Or will there be little difference?

  • Any - Stop / Start Systems 10 Dec 2017 (Forum)
This post came about as the result of a direct question elsewhere on the forum. I was asked specifically what I thought the effect of s/s was on engine life. But this set me off on something of a rant about how s/s had come into being as well as it's effects on the cars mechanical systems (and not-so-mechanical driver). After a bit of editing, I came up with this.
