Flushing oil 6 Aug 2007 (Forum)
From what I've read, 'flushing oils' have generally had a bad press - apparently causing more problems, like oil leaks from tired seals etc. The Volvo has 132,000 miles on the clock, BTW. I was toying with the idea of draining the tar (sorry, oil!) and re-filling with a mixture of 25% flushing oil to 75% 'supermarket oil', replacing the oil filter element and gently driving the car 100 miles or so before draining this oil, re-filling with quality oil and again replacing the filter element. -
Suggestions for 'sports' car? 10 May 2007 (Forum)
Mrs S6 has a plan - she swops her Yaris for a Golf/Focus size model, whilst I forgo the comfort of my S60 and enter the mid life crisis stage and get something 'a bit sporty'- her phrase. My budget would be between £9,000 and £11,000 (after selling the Volvo). At first I thought about a Honda S2000, but a quick look at Autotrader showed only a few imports from Japan and 2000 registered models (I'd prefer the new car to be 4 years old max.) Never been keen on BMW's, a Lotus Elise and MX-5 are too small, so I'm struggling really. -
Insurance help needed 26 Feb 2007 (Forum)
I just got a shock over the phone from my current insurance company. I've had a Toyota Starlet and just bought a Volvo S40, called my insurance to change the vehicle on the policy and they're asking me to pay additional £509 for the remaining 6 months. Whereas I've rung other companies, including MoreThan with whom I've got another car covered and they've quoted me £539 for the whole year. -
SAAB 9-5 Gearbox oil change 10 Nov 2006 (Forum)
My dealer is very reluctant to change the gearbox oil though. I thought it was a good idea, as the gear changing is a bit stiffer than my Volvo s80, and I imagined it would prolong the life of the box. The dealer first suggested it to be an impossible task without removing the box, but later merely said it was very diffcult, and not recommended unless the clutch was to be changed too. -
A Surplus of Hyundai Coupes 27 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Secondly, with the winter and the awful Christmas looming, how on earth are the poor salesmen going to unload a parcel of semi-sporting cars in this not particularly car-oriented town? (The Volvos I can well imagine going here, gawdelpus!). (I think I'd like a Susuki Swift Sport, but the dealer is about 40 miles away and would I get permission to trade in Sonia, an eminently satisfactory if sometimes boring machine?) -
This year's advisory is next year's fail 22 Sep 2006 (Forum)
I had an advisory last year on the Volvo's front discs, to the effect that they were getting thin. Now they have lasted 235K miles and I've only done about 2K since last year, the car having been SORN'd since May so the thin-ness should hardly have increased (or should that be decreased?) -
Most Reliable Cars 8 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Off-roaders 1st Honda CRV, 2nd Subaru Forester. MPVs 1st Toyota Verso, 2nd Citroen Xsara Picasso. Luxury Cars 1st Audi A6, 2nd Volvo V70. The MPVs and Luxury cars top scores were not as high as the other classes. One or two slight surprises in the results for me - particularly the French cars coming second in two classes. -
Pilot green Fuel Saver Any thoughts? 3 Aug 2006 (Forum)
This is the item in question.... (assuming links are allowed) if not ebay v4o fuel saving http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/volvo-s40-v40-s60-s70-s80-v70-v60-v90-940-fuel-saver_W0QQitemZ150017992176QQihZ005QQcategoryZ43120QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem They certainly have all the banter and sales patter onthem, but in the real world do they have an effect on your consumption and or smooth running of the car? -
Clutch slip: what are the risks? 2 May 2006 (Forum)
I've got a manual 91 Volvo 240SE. I think I've noticed occasional 1 or 2 moments delay in engaging higher gears, and rare momentary high revving disproportionate to road-speed. All in all, consistent with a slipping clutch. -
Daytime Notice Lights 31 Dec 2005 (Forum)
I have no idea why your government has not yet adopted this significant safety measure - it's certainly using "safety" as an excuse for all sorts of other auto controls, and I remember it being around in the mid 1970s when Volvo introduced it on their cars. Is it just a case of government by snails (like the conversion from Fahrenheit to Celsius) ? Nigel -
Scania lorry vents 17 Nov 2005 (Forum)
The vents seem to be slightly angles down on a Scania, but on DAF and MAN trucks they appear to be just scoops and less obvious. I did not see any on the Volvo truck on my limited survey this morning. http://www.scania.co.uk/Trucks/model_range/p_series/ If pushed to guess I would suggest that given their position they may channel air down the side of the truck at just above wheel level possibly helping to reduce spray.... -
VW Shuttle 2.5TDI version identification 9 Jul 2005 (Forum)
I guess even the lower powered model is hardly going to be gutless with 340Nm torque but having never driven one before I have nothing to compare with. I guess however that the differences may be software alone (like is the case with Volvo's current generation 2.4D and D5 motors fitted to P2 platform - S60/V70/S80 - cars in different markets) but ask the question in case not. -
Company Car Tax - 2006 Non-EuroIV 5 Jun 2005 (Forum)
I have read and heard recently about the fact there are to be some changes next year on company car tax for diesels but cannot seem to get a clear idea of what is to happen and how it will affect me. Can someone help please? I drive a 2005 Volvo S60 D5 S which is a Turbo Diesel, 2.4 litres with a CO2 of 166g. With the Diesel surcharge on company car tax of 3% because it's not Euro IV this makes it taxable at 23% of it's list price for the 2005/06 Tax year. -
£900 a year tax?!?! 2 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Pretty bad you might think but here's a taste of which cars are possibly going to qualify for this new tax; VW Sharan 2.0S Range Rover Sport 4.4 V8 (hardly the same as a VW is it?) Ford Galaxy 2.3LX Volvo V70 2.4SE Personally, I think it's pretty disgraceful. I thought we paid for lower consumption through tax on petrol? If this is about cutting greenhouse gases, then I'm the 3rd Tsar of Uzbekistan. -- Adam -
1998 Punto 60S shakes under braking 16 Mar 2005 (Forum)
My wife's 1998 75,000 mile Fiat Punto 60S has a distinct shake under heavy braking similar to having warped discs. It seems to be coming from the nearside... -
Common or Prestige? 4 Nov 2004 (Forum)
I'm looking to change my car and will have about £13-£14k to spend. Buying new won't get me much-I'm after a family/exec with auto and so far looked at Volvo S60, Mondeo, Vectra, Jag X-type, MG ZT, VW Passat, all nearly new. Lets take the Vectra-nice 2.2 petrol auto, leather, climate etc etc-loads of goodies but I'll buy it when it's 18 months old for £13k and in 3 years what will it be worth-£7k if I'm lucky. -

Heh!... 18 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Pied Piper Pc led drivers astray Motorists were lead on a mystery tour through Essex after a policeman accidentally switched on a sign telling the drivers behind to "Follow Me." Five motorists took the instruction to heart and tailed the police Volvo for a number of miles as the officer carried out his routine patrol. The officer - now dubbed the Pied Piper by colleagues - noticed the convoy near Maldon and pulled over. Essex Police said the unnamed inspector had apologised to the motorists. -
Mitsubishi carisma 5 Feb 2004 (Forum)
i understand that every car differs due to how its been driven and maintained, but in general - what mileage is left for such a car? also a mint volvo v40 saloon 2.0 x-plate with 90k on the clock went for £3,200 - shame its out of my current price range.
