  • Variable Speed Limit Change 28 Apr 2015 (Forum)
Hi, first time poster although an avid reader for some time. Driving along the M42 near Shirley last Friday which is covered by Variable Speed Limit Camera's, traffic is light & as I approach one between J4 & 3a they change to 50 limit. Quick look in my mirror & a car close behind so choose not to brake (my speed about 70) but to lift off for a few seconds.
  • any - My town.....traffic 'calming' etc 4 Apr 2013 (Forum)
road humps which  lorries and buses etc roar over but wreck car suspensions, plenty of priority to oncoming vehicles in the middle of nowhere, police in the revenue camera vans lurking. One road has been narrowed to make a wide cycle path which I've never seen a bike on. The A30 which once was one of Britains major arteries has more  lanes whited out than open.
  • De Dion Bouton - Lot of talk about town centre's dying 15 Dec 2011 (Forum)
It's just their whole motorist hating ethos.  One way, traffic calming, officious wardens, spy camera cars, cctv fines etc.  Too much hassle.  Far easier and free to go to out of town shopping centres. Well from what I've been hearing finally councils are realising they've killed off the golden goose.

  • FIAT Punto II (1999 - 2006) - Logbook 24 Jun 2009 (Forum)
I'm not sure if anyone can help me but about 10 days ago I was taking my car to be part exchanged when I saw a camera van along the way. Now I dont think I was speeding but I'm waiting the 14 days just to be sure. I havent sent the logbook off yet as I dont want any NIP's to go to the new address. Can I be sure they will come to my address and not somone elses as long as I havent sent off my part of the logbook, as I dont want to have to worry about this for 6 months?
  • West Yorks Police Capture Car 30 Apr 2009 (Forum)
Basically they leave a vehicle in a vulnerable position with something of value on the seat and wait for someone to break into it. The miscreant is unaware that there is camera filming his antics. Anyway West Yorks police press office have just emailed around footage of this loser so incompetent he cant even break into a car that has been adapted specifically to allow him to do so.
  • Hats off to Yorkshire 29 Apr 2008 (Forum)
(Well I often wear a hat.) I've just been from Selby to near Whitby via the A19, A64 and A169; no speed cameras, plenty of hazards between Pickering and Whitby, and also near Kirkham on the A64, but it's almost all NSL. So the authorities there regard motorists as reasonably intelligent beings able to make their own decisions after some good advice via road signs.
  • Jailed for altering car appearance to avoid ticket 13 Apr 2008 (Forum)
I have heard that you can dispute speed camera photo evidence by taking pictures of your car to show it is different due to stickers ec, which could help if your car has been cloned. However, this one tried to avoid a genuine speeding ticket and ended up with something much more serious: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/hereford/worcs/7340281.stm I can see how he was caught though.
  • UK driving vs Candian Standards. 3 Oct 2007 (Forum)
Having just returned from Canada, it was such a joy to drive over there doing some 1500 miles. No Big Brother Cameras, Passing either side, Giving way to each other to merge, Just indicate to change lanes (No problem), Who cares about speed limits and Pedestrians having the right of way crossing a road on a green.
  • Sat Navs obscuring view 25 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Surely if a Police Officer (if you ever see one these days) spotted this they could be charged with driving without due care?? But then again, who needs a Police Officer, when a speed camera will catch them out !!!!!!!!!
  • Favourite/Disappointing cars you've had 16 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Not the greatest car in the world but I do miss my Citroen BX 16V.Quick for its day(and still, 0-60 7.5s 140 mph), great handling, economical , spacious , very different compared with all other hot hatches around, tons of extras , comfortable. Probably one of the last great Citroens.Owned in the days before blanket speed camera coverage! The Ford Puma I owned a few years back was a huge let down.Never felt quick , didn't like to be revved. Driving position too high , cramped cabin, local Ford dealer (chiselling g#t).Was glad to get rid.
  • Insurance claim History 20 Apr 2007 (Forum)
I informed my insurance company of the accident but didn't claim on my insurance, I didn't even make use of the claims assistance. (wonderful things - camera 'phones and witness statements!) When my insurance is up for renewal do I still need to "declare" the accident ? I don't really have a problem with declaring it as it's obvioulsy 100% no fault but if I don't have to I wont.
  • Caravans - Why so expensive? 25 Jul 2006 (Forum)
A basic 2 berth caravan seems to be about £10K new. Bearing in mind the technology one can buy for that money, or a lot less, plasma TVs, digital cameras, new cars with a/c and so on why are caravans so pricey? I haven't looked round one lately but they seem to be a two wheel welded chassis with brakes, suspension, and lights and a load of Ikea, MFI, Portacabin tat screwed on top.
  • Traffic Cops: on board ANPR 5 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Have I got it right, that Traffic cops can just drive round with their car automatically reading number plates and checking them for road-tax and insurance (and pretty soon M.O.T. certificate once they get a new elastic-band to fix the computer)? Also, are car-parks etc being fitted with ANPR cameras so that untaxed and (possibly) uninsured cars automatically get caught? If so, I welcome it. If I have to pay for my insurance, tax and MOT then so should everyone else. Especially if they're also looking for stolen / cloned cars.

I was looking at replacing my Peugeot 206 Sw 1.4 and have a budget of £11k and have been looking at Mazda 1.6, Focus, or Astra. I have uploaded a camera photo pic http://www.theairlineguide.co.uk/note.jpg Thanks in advance Baz
  • GPS Safey Alerts Systems 24 Apr 2005 (Forum)
I am interested to know more about GPS Systems that alert you to speed cameras, accident blackspots etc. I have read that the use of them can reduce accidents but it strikes me that if we drive within the speed limit there would be no need for these devices at all. I like gadgets and was wondering about getting a Road Angel or Snooper Evolution - but would it just be a waste of money and make me rely on the device being alert rather than me being alert and driving properly???
  • One-handed steering 4 Apr 2005 (Forum)
I was a trifle disconcerted to see that Jason Plato on Five's 'Fifth Gear' the other night was driving the BMW from Spain to Blighty with only one hand on the steering wheel. This may have been an easier way when talking to camera but I got the impression, from his general demeanour, that he might be a serial one-hander driver except, of course, when he is using his doubtless skills on the track. My parnter insists on driving her car with one hand on the steering wheel with the other varioulsy on the gear lever (horror of horrors - as was Jason!)
  • The Top Gear Thread - Vol 10 19 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Last Sunday, in the feature on getting to Manchester and back more cheaply than by train, they were driving along a motorway, one hand on the wheel, elbow on the door trim, checking out the cars' gizmos, yakking away and looking at the camera. Hardly attentive driving whilst mainatining a high level of control. And they used what used to be called walkie-talkies! Difference between them and mobile phones, please?
  • Flashed at in France 7 Feb 2004 (Forum)
I was recently driving south of Paris and had just passed through some dreadful jams (it is nice that there are signs telling you how long it will take to get to a particular junction) and needed to make up a little bit of time so I went a little bit over the posted speed limit. Unfortunately there was a bliding flash which I presume was a camera taking a pretty photo of my face. Am i likely to be fined etc etc. BTW for those of you who are off to France, the police are now stopping anyone doing more than 136 kmh on the 130 kmh stretch of the autoroute.
  • Clarkson gets Bentley stuck! 26 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Jezza was apparently not amused ("I told you that would happen"!) & stormed off. This was all captured on camera by a local journalist. I have to say Jezza's face was a picture! marky mark
