Nissan Note - bazza1603
Hi,

I have been looking at one today quickly at the dealers and was really impressed with what I saw. Its a lot bigger both inside and out, and I was thinking about a 1.5 Diesel (Approx £12k) or 1.4 petrol SE model for approx £11k.

Has anyone got comments on the Note, and would it be £12k of your money? How quickly do you expect before prices are discounted?

I was looking at replacing my Peugeot 206 Sw 1.4 and have a budget of £11k and have been looking at Mazda 1.6, Focus, or Astra.

I have uploaded a camera photo pic

Thanks in advance Baz

The 1.5 diesel is the same engine as fitted to my Megane. It's a very refined engine returning 55mpg with ease. It loves to rev as well, making quite a sporty noise for a diesel and is very linear in its power delivery. However if you do a modest mileage then the petrol engine may be a better choice financially.

It looks like Modus and it's overpriced by at least £5,000. Wait few months - I bet it will sell slow, mainly because of it's fuglyfique renaultness (just like Modus Note will be a niche car - it already doesn't fit neither Primera nor Almera clientele). Mark my words - it will be heavily discounted soon enough.

Seemed to be a very popular car when I was in Japan last year - loads of them about, so the Japanese obviously like them. Had a try of it and I liked it a lot too.

Japanese Note has different engine, gearbox (1.5 litre 16V HR15DE engine and xtronic CVT), suspension and slightly lighter chasis. There is also very good looking version with Autech bodykit. European note is very stiff, with "knock fillings out of your teeth" hard rear suspension (even less forgiving than Almeras) plus additional chasis elements put in Euro version to make the body more rigid created extra 120kg (10%) weight to it. And that hopeless notchy Modus gearbox in diesel models...

Didn't try the Diesel, only the manual petrol. But no doubt you're right and the Japanese and Euro versions are a bit different.

How bad is the gearbox?. Our current car is a 206 which is notchy. I had a hire Micra 1.2 E the other day which wasnot silk smooth, but was still better than the Peugeot. Can it be compared easier to those?

Best regards

In my experience Renault gearboxes need about 10K to loosen up a bit.

Friend works on the production line at Sunderland were main production has been the Note. He tells me it is essentially a 'Modus in a different skin' and the most Renault Nissan they have built yet, if you understand what I mean. :)

This seems a bit odd to me because the Modus has not been a great seller for Renault, the sales have been below target. So I can't imagine why the Note would sell any better, it's obviously a format of car that no one particularly wants.

If you want a smooth gearbox, and as much room as a Note, try a Honda Jazz. It has a bigger boot than the Colt and the 1.4 SE is well under £11,000.

Jazz has the best gearbox i've used.

Hi,

I cannot sit in the Jazz due to the stupid shelves next to the pedals along side the steering column. Long Legs and big feet, and maybe a salesman that didnot know the Jazz meant I couldnot get in.

Was looking at a new Jazz last year, but opted for a nearly new 206 instead.

I am going to hang on until April or May and hopefully will get a decent discount by then. Otherwise will look at something else.

Regards
