A basic 2 berth caravan seems to be about £10K new. Bearing in mind the technology one can buy for that money, or a lot less, plasma TVs, digital cameras, new cars with a/c and so on why are caravans so pricey? I haven't looked round one lately but they seem to be a two wheel welded chassis with brakes, suspension, and lights and a load of Ikea, MFI, Portacabin tat screwed on top. I am asking partly because my daughter bought a 7 berth static home the other day and the price rather flabbered my ghast, if you know what I mean!
Caravans - Why so expensive? - Pugugly {P}
I'd like to think that prices are fixed to deter people from buying them, thus reducing their impact on everyday motoring.

I would suggest the reality is that they are totally hand built with very specialist skills.

I see - it's all becoming quite clear now. So that's what you get up to as a form of debauchery when drunk!

I thought I was pretty evil, but visiting caravans in a drunken state is just despicable!

You have never been to Caravan factory have you? They are thrown together very quickly and from what I saw very little regard to the quality of finish was taken. But that was 10 years ago so of course things may well have changed!!!!!

I'm sure you're right ! I was in a firend's house yesterday and he (a motorcyclist) was planning to buy a Tobbas or something, some German made 'van of some quality.

Two-berth for £10K? Sounds like a bargain. Have you seen the price of an Airstream Classic with just a double bed in the back - £85 grand by the time it's here and [fairly] legal.

I was following one, last year, in rural Maine when it turned off into the drive of a house.
We stopped to take a few photos and the owners told us that it had just been bought and driven by them from Canada.
A super looking bit of kit.

My American friend, with a sense of humour sent me.......A string of Christmas lights in the form of....
Airstream caravans!!!

They are still available on US Ebay, in case anyone else has a similar sense of humour.

Before starting this thread I did check on some prices and £10k was possible and represented a £1500 discount off list. I still think that, for what they are, they are very expensive. Mind you, so is a can of pop at 60p, I guess the can costs more that the contents! A caravan is a simple chassis, some large fibre glass mouldings and insulation, some cheap carpets and furniture, a fridge and a cooker and toilet of some sort. Technology of the 1950s and the price of 2006 IMHO
Caravans - Why so expensive? - madf
Tried buying a new kitchen, a new bed, carpets , curtains and toilet for your house complete with all new electrical fittings, built in wardrbes and plumbing, cooker and fridge Plus wall to roof to ground insulation.

Do it in one room in a house and you'll have little change from £10k.

Soft furnishings plus wood cost a LOT of money.

( You do realise the cost of the seats , headlining, carpets and door trims in a car ? If it's a BMW little change from £2-£3k imo.. - not leather of course. There are no toilets in most cars... nor built in drinks cabinets or fridges)
madf
Caravans - Why so expensive? - Armitage Shanks {p}
madf - I hear what you are saying but you are talking top of the market for your one room! I am talking cheap fibreglass mouldings, fibreglass loft insuation, B & Q fittings, MFI flatpak stuff and bottom of the market plumbing fittings, gas cooker and fridge. A new kitchen for a house wouldn't even fit into a 2 berth caravan.! You are looking at 3 or 4 small chipboard cupboards for a caravan kitchen! The caravan isn't a BMW in perceived or actual quality - it is a shed on wheels with a fancy price!
Caravans - Why so expensive? - Robin Reliant
I live in a tourist area with no dual carriageways for miles. The schools broke up yesterday so I will have to suffer six weeks of being stuck behind the damn things. The motorhomes are even slower, if that's possible. The only consolation is that after crawling behind one for miles on end when an opportunity for an overtake does arrive I have accumulated a nice build up of diesel soot in the system, so a trip to the rev limiter does bring a certain amount of satisfaction.
Caravans - Why so expensive? - Manatee
I hold no brief for caravans but when there is a queue behind one, it is usually caused by following vehicles whose drivers can neither overtake nor leave space in between for anyone else to do so.

Normal A roads are almost a lost cause anyway, even out of holiday season, with HGVs limited to 40mph on single carriageways.
Caravans - Why so expensive? - bell boy

Take a trip to the Dusseldorf caravan show and pick up a 6 berth brand new German caravan for about £10-11k. German vans are better made and although the door is on the wrong side in the UK its on the right side when on the continent!

www.reisemobile-wohnwagen.de/ is the dealer I bought from top notch!

I managed to get 95mph towing my van on the autobahn, which was a bit stupid I suppose but I was driving my RR 4.6 which towed like a dream, I havn't towed it much since I bought it as its stored but I intend to pull over as much as required to avoid holding up traffic on a roads as I now have a Mondeo TD.
Caravans - Why so expensive? - Ruperts Trooper
To answer the original question - because the caravan "industry" is a collection of small scale outfits building by hand. I can't wait for the Koreans or Chinese to start building them!

To answer the question why caravanners cause tailbacks - because too many drivers are incapable of overtaking when they get a safe opportunity. I can see in my mirrors when there's a queue behind me but 99% of the time no-one bothers to come past even when I pull right over and indicate to suggest that it's clear.

Next time you're held up behind a caravan, remember it's probably the dozy driver in between that's the problem, not me.

The government could increase the speed limit for trailers, then there would be no-one to blame for hold-ups!
Caravans - Why so expensive? - malteser
Caravan sales are very seasonal, which means that the cost of stocking them, often met by the makers via their chosen Fonance House and typically on interest free credit to the dealer, is very high.
Think of it as a business in which profits are generated in 6 months of the year while expenses roll along for 12 months of the year.
Having played the Devil's advocate, may I say I agree that simply on a value for hardware basis, caravans are generally grossly overpriced.

"I can see in my mirrors when there's a queue behind me but 99% of the time no-one bothers to come past even when I pull right over and indicate to suggest that it's clear."

Have you thought that the driver behind would interpret your signal as your intention to pull over and let the traffic past (which you have said you can see)? You can't be critical of the driver behind for not knowing what you intend the signal to mean if it is intended to be something other than what the HC said it is, and even if he/she did, it's not your responsibility to make the call on when it is safe - it is the call of the guy/gal behind you.

If you see a long line of traffic as a result of your 'van, just pull over and let it pass. That takes all of the guesswork out and we all have a safer trip.

Not having a go btw, just expressing some common sense.

TT.

Hadn't seen that clip in ages. Funny but "tragic" for owners if true.

Sad as it sounds, Discovery Channel had a programme called something like "how it's made" on last week and they showed a caravan being built (might have been Friday). All hand built etc. but you realise you do not get much for your money. Sadly I swatched it whilst working from home.

Actually one watched because (a) seen how flimsy they are if they overturn and (b) little different to a fixed caravan and I know how much a big one in the lakes sells for.

Economies of scale, fortunately no one produces that many of them.
Caravans - Why so expensive? - Sofa Spud
Motor caravans often seem to be driven slower than trailer caravans.

Is that because a lot of them have been hired and the drivers are scared of damaging them, or perhaps because the caravanners want to admire the scenery.

Having said that, I've been toying with the idea of getting a caravan but prefer the idea of a motorcaravan (camper type, rather than mobile portakabin!) plus a luggage trailer.

Caravans - Why so expensive? - bell boy
you drive a motorcaravan slowly cos your on holiday.........thats my thinking anyway.
they cost a grand a week to hire up here ...............
Caravans - Why so expensive? - v8man
I agree about the reason for the cost. It is economy of scale. Also, there is no such thing as cheap fibreglass mouldings. They are all hand laid in wooden moulds and this takes a great deal of time and skill.
The interiors are not flat pack: quite the contrary, the furniture is structural.

I used to tow a caravan with a Rover SD1 Vitesse and I can tell you I held no one up! I even out dragged an XR3i from the lights on the A27 at Shoreham. I'm not proud, but it was funny!

The current caravan builders offer 4/5 models. each with 2/3 internal layouts + combinations of different woods, fabrics etc.

What is needed to reduce the costs is for 1 manufacturer to produce 1 product that answers the needs of 80% caravanners.
Very limited range of options at a keen price. The rest would ahve to follow

The equivalent of a the Ford Model T - except not in black.
Easyjet & Ryanair showed BA etc's high priced local, European Flights

Caravans - Why so expensive? - Lud
One of my wife's numerous cousins had a very big long old caravan outside his cottage in Sussex. I think he's sold it now.

Quite extraordinary thing, very very ornate in a flimsy sort of way inside, with a stove and a lot of cabinets fronted with elaborately engraved perspex, like a posh late 19th century pub or a prostitute's sitting room. Perhaps a traveller/Romany thing. Pretty naff when you're sober but quite jolly after sufficient booze and substances I would think.
Caravans - Why so expensive? - ukbeefy
Dell produces alot of different versions that are customisable.....I understand its really competitive advantage is in how it manages the production process to customise products using off the shelf items with very little stock. Part of the ease of their production process is the standardisation of the fundamental chassis and connectivity of parts - eg standard busses etc.

In theory assembling something like a caravan should be pretty standardised once you've designed and templated all the constituent bits plus the bought in equipment.

Maybe just the volumes are not high enough to allow economies of scale. This may stem from caravans being a notoriously nationalistic market...very few Brits buy German or French caravans and likewise so each manufacturer is within reason assembling for a local market a little like the UK car industry in the 1950s. Also to continue this comparison further there has been no obvious external change from US or Japanese market entry that has sharpened up the locals to show how things can be made more efficient.

I always wonder with caravans where is the sort of product that matches the sort of design flair you see in other product areas eg interior design, modern car design eg Audi TT, product design. Surely some people must feel short changed in buying a cream/white prefab box to attach to their clean silvery Germanic machine. Could someone at least have a caravan that is not painted white or cream...how about silver or blue.
Caravans - Why so expensive? - Armitage Shanks {p}
Lots of UK residents buy Foreign camping wagons though, and not just the chassis/engine combination. Look at the number of Hymer campers one see here, and on UK plates. There is a huge market for caravans, look at the numbers on the roads and parked up for the hols. I have read what people have said in reply to my query but I still think that the average caravan is over-priced tat!
Caravans - Why so expensive? - Lud

not painted white or cream...how about silver or blue.

Yeah, or bright red with painted flames streaming back from the front end, a stripe down the middle and a racing number on the door, low profile tyres on split-rim wheels, raccoon tail on the radio aerial and a big false exhaust pipe sticking out of the back, perhaps with a device enabling it to emit sheets of flame to deter impatient tailgaters...

A motor caravan is something I've really never understood. You wake up on a morning, fancy a newspaper and a pint of milk, so you have to lash everything down, unpitch (or whatever the technical term is) and off you go. 10 minutes later you come back and go through the whole palaver in reverse. Potty.
