  I have an S Reg BMW 318iSE which has done 78000 miles and twice in the space of a 1.5 years the car has broken down with cooling system problems. The first time the thermostat failed which caused the expansion tank to crack.

  I am at a loss to explain the oil useage or how to correct it economically.  I have experieced BMW main dealers with their "highly-trained technicians" and am not impressed. I suspect all that they would provide would be a large bill, with little satisfaction, so I am not  inclined to approach them.

  In the face of an increasingly huge bill to bring the BMW up to scratch (MOT plus a large bodywork bill to deal with rust) I decided not to bother and I've swapped her for a 52 reg MGTF 1.8 135. I know, I know that they're two entirely different cars, but the MG was the only thing that I could swap the BMW for that would offer a similar level of fun.

  The mis-firing was £100+ VAT - the coil must be the expensive bit as there was only 45 mins or so between start & finish of the work. In true BMW style the owner had arrived with dipped headlights + spot lights on at 8:30 {And in true BR style, within 24 hrs of the last mention of lighting abuse, it gets yet another one ;0) - DD} Anyone want to buy a 318, Silver, 3yrs old, 1 careless owner........................

  A colleague bought a BMW about a month ago and has arrived at work this morning with some problems. The car is a 330i SE 52 reg. and done 141,000. The car has been fine until he was on the way to work this morning when it started smoking.

  Hi I got rid of the old Laguna and got myself a shiny E46 BMW 318i SE. I am really pleased with it but it has one strange habit. It starts great, pulls when stone cold like a tug but when the temperature gauge hits the top of the blue mark the car acts like the accelerator pedal is disconnected.

  I have 1.6 liter '87 E30 BMW 316 with Pierburg 1B2 carburetor and LPG conversion. It has only 30000 miles on the clock, and was not in use for 7 years (but was started and let at idle for ~20 min every month). I started to use it now, and all worked perfect for 1000 miles, but now engine is shaking at idle.

  Well, SWMBO has had thoughts about changing her MINI. She fancied a BMW 120d so we booked a test drive. We had a couple of unsupervised hours with a 5k miler 118d manual. Somewhat disappointed I'm afraid. The engine was lively enough (bearing in mind she wants the even livelier 2.0litre)albeit with an irritating flat spot.

  i'm new here and have searched for info and read a few of the oil related threads before launching in and posting a question. I have just purchased a very abused BMW 325 TD 94 (L) 134,000 mls. the oil is very black and has that gritty feel when rubbed between finger and thumb. i have no history on the car and this was reflected in the price i paid for it.. .. cheap as chips i hope.. ..

  Went down to Harwich docks yesterday to pick up my imported BMW 320d. When I got to the collection pound, the place was mainly filled with Golf's Rav 4's a few Merc Sports Coupes and BMW's! As I pulled up, two transporter loads of Rav 4's and BMW's were leaving.
