Fuel price thread 25 Feb 2013 (Forum)
Apologies again: I am a reluctant censor, and it's only a very small minority of people (the same ones every time, sadly) who are causing the problem. If anyone wants to continue this thread by discussing fuel prices, please do, but keep it polite and keep it relevant. -
Albany Car Hire 8 Jul 2012 (Forum)
A couple of weeks later my son received a final demand from Albany (this was the first one we had received) demanding payment of the fuel surcharge. I explained to the female representative we had filled up the car as requested but she said we should have returned it empty. Is Albany trying to have 2 bites of the fuel cherry or should we just pay up and hope never to do business with them again? -
Peugeot 406 (1999 - 2004) - 02 2.1 Fuel filter change - Diesel 5 Oct 2010 (Forum)
Pug 406 HDi 2.1 Hi, I'm thinking of changing the fuel filter. After hearing about bits of metal getting into the fuel system, I was thinking maybe to change the whole filter housing including filter which I can get from my local Pug dealer. I'm trying to avoid problems with what is a very reliable car. -
Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - 06 1.9 Hydro hybrid fuel improvement for better mp 18 Dec 2009 (Forum)
Forget the Green bit in a way, I'm also after the Mean part of this product, i.e saving money on ever rising petrol & diesel costs at the pump. I'm very persuaded to get a Hydo unit from hydrotechnix (http://www.water-fuel-hybrid.moonfruit.com) but I'm still a little nervous. Does anyone have any experience of how well these work and if they last? For an investment of several hundred pounds (including the EECU to combat my ECU) I think I'm looking at a 2 year payback if I get 20% imporvement in fuel efficiency (25,000 miles and £1.05/l) Has anyone had any insurance issues? -
Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 96 1.9 Fuel Pump Solenoid? or Is It The Pump? 3 Aug 2009 (Forum)
The nice man from the RAC (Mick) was really good and thinks its either the solenoid or the rota arm in the fuel pump. The fuel is getting to the pump but does not come out top the injectors. 1. Can the solenoid be replaced easy? 2. Can the pump be replaced easy? 3. Can it be something else? 4. Can the solenoid be by passed to see if it is faulty? -

Audi A4 (1995 - 2000) - 1997 1.8 Fuel Management Problem. I Think! 7 Mar 2009 (Forum)
It eventually got worse and the car wouldn't idle at all and while revving the engine at mid range and holding it, it would cut out and then go back up again. I changed the fuel filter 2 months ago which helped a bit for a while but the problem has came back full force. There's also a loud hissing noise from the petrol cap which i'm unsure about. I was thinking it may be a clogged fuel pick up or the pump has seen better days. -
Volkswagen Golf V (2004 - 2008) - 05 2.0SDI Possible fuel pump problem. 12 Jan 2009 (Forum)
When the car is finally started it will run for about 2-3min then cuts out. (only runs if I dont push down on the accelerator) At a guess, could this be the fuel pump? Is this something that happens to Golfs? My SDI has only done 55k miles. I have also noticed that my fuel consumption has increased over the last 2 months from where i was getting approx 450 from the tank recently I only got 390 from the tank Any thoughts guys? -
Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 03 2.0 fuel consumption 18 Dec 2008 (Forum)

Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 1999 2.0 HDI Air in fuel line? 23 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Hi, I very stupidly let my car run out of diesel the other day, she started fine when I put fuel in her and I drove to work. I then drove home and it was still ok (although the engine diagnostics light was on) but when I tried to start her again it wouldnt kick in, I am assuming there is air in the fuel line? -
Peugeot 406 (1999 - 2004) - 02 2.0 diesel fuel filter 15 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Hi, Today was the day I dusted off the spanners and gave my Pug 406 a service. When I got the service items I wanted a fuel filter only to be told there were two types - Bosch and another which i think began with Tec??? As I was not in the Pug to check which one was fitted, I thought I could leave it until I'd done the rest of the service, identify the type and then change it at a later date. -
Has fuel consumption improved? 29 Jun 2008 (Forum)
I've just been looking at my 'What Car' magazine (August 2008) and there is a section about reducing fuel consumption. They've done some tests on cars to show how the speed in top gear effects the consumption, and the results for the Aygo are rather shocking IMHO. The Aygo gets 61mpg on the combined cycle, so I would expect 70+mpg at motorway speeds. -
higher fuel prices = opportunities for luxury cars 20 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Speaking personally, higher fuel prices mean that sooner, rather than later, I can finally afford that luxury car I have always wanted. I only drive 6k miles p.a.and working part time make full use of a cheap rail fare to work. Looking at recent auction reports, I may soon be able to purchase that Lexus LS430 once prices hit £10k. -
Audi A3 + S3 (1996 - 2001) - 1999 1.8 - Fuel Additives - Sluggish Acceleration 31 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Air mass meter was replaced about 18 months ago so I am sure it isn't that (thankfully!). My hope is that maybe there is some crud in the fuel tank which can be blasted out with some fuel cleaner/additive and premium unleaded on a fast stretch of motorway. Do you have any suggestions or successful additives you have used in the past? Thank you. -
A bigger engine = worse fuel economy? 15 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Hi, Been looking for a new mid-mpv, at my price range I can get a nearly new 1.6 or 1.8 Zafira or a bit older diesel, pretty much the same situation on the other cars I have looked at. I am keen to get as fuel efficient car as I can, my current Picasso gives around 35 mpg on longer trips but reading some reviews it seems that in some cases 1.8 or 2.0 cars can get better fuel efficiency and in some cases better than their equivalent 1.6. -
Vectra problems 29 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Now I find an oil leak , which my local garage tells me is coming from where the fuel pump goes into the engine block .They say 99% sure it's poor work and/or a faulty seal when the fuel system work was done. I expect they will dispute that and I may just blow my own gasket when they get it tomorrow! -
vw 110tdi power loss 5 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Turbo hose? Fuel filter? (I use Jet or Tesco fuel) By the way, if you haven't yet tried toothpaste to clean windscreens and wipers - do so now. -
1987 Golf GTi missing on right bends 9 Oct 2004 (Forum)
But no change, the car would misfire, in fact cutout but instantaneously come back to life meaning the car lurches for a few seconds then seems to recover. The fuel pump has been noisy for years but the misfire/cutouts seem to be related to when the noisy fuel pump whirr becomes an bit irregular. OK I thought, could be the fuel filter so changed that, then the fuel pump relay but still the same problem. -
Diesel filter priming - Mk4 Golf. 7 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Can anyone recommend how I should prime a new diesel filter for fittment to a MkIV Golf TDI engine. There is no manually operated pump to prime the fuel system - or if there is I cant locate it..... It also states in the handbook that if you run out of fuel, it may take the engine longer than normal to start - it specifies up to one minute - as the system must be freed of air. -
Low Fuel Consumption 29 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Is the fuel consumption normal? I was expecting at least 40 mpg out of it! What could I do to improve the consumption? I bought a car from an Independant VW/Audi garage, who mainly deal second hand motors. Also, brakes squeak while driving at low speeds and when turning corners.
