1999 2.0 HDI Air in fuel line? - seandalmeny
Hi, I very stupidly let my car run out of diesel the other day, she started fine when I put fuel in her and I drove to work. I then drove home and it was still ok (although the engine diagnostics light was on) but when I tried to start her again it wouldnt kick in, I am assuming there is air in the fuel line? Can anybody tell me where I can find this 'nipple or pear shaped' thing to let air out of the line?

When trying to find this illusive nipple I could hear a noise that was either air being expelled or taken in seemingly coming from the filter or the main head.

I'm sorry if this doesnt make any sense as I am a car novice but any info would be much appreciated!!

Thanks

Sean

Hi,

I doubt it's air in the fuel line. HDi's are self bleeding and priming. Also due to the extreme pressures involved, the high pressure side of the fuel system poses a serious risk of injury if you get it wrong when 'fixing' it.

If the tank ran dry then all the sludge and junk will have been sucked up that normally lies undisturbed, so try changing the fuel filter and housing. If this doesn't help it could be that the tank or injector pump have been damaged by the sludge.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for that, I think I might be a little bit out of my depth on this one! Somebody suggested towing the car for a few miles? I'm not sure how that would help?

The weird thing is that I started it and ran it twice after running out with no problems and then when I tried to start it a 3rd time, nothing. If I leave it for half an hour or so and then turn it over it seems as if it tries to start and then back to nothing again.

Really confused!! Prob going to have to book into the garage so they can take all of my hard earned money me thinks!!

Cheers

Sean
