DIY service 2001 A4 TDi 130 22 Oct 2006 (Forum)
They both appear to be on the plastic shaft that goes down through the middle of the element filter. I did not replace them this time but will do it next time. There was a vacuum hose that runs up the left hand side of the head and around the back of a silvery cap thing that protrudes through the silver engine cover trim. It had been rubbing due to engine vibe on the silver cap and had worn trough. -
'07 Harley Heritage Softail 96 cube 4 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Potato-potato-potato-potato through the "shortie" pipes heralded his arrival past my home office window, photographs buzzing on the wall in sympathy and kids running agog to the kitchen window opposite. After plenty of photos and video had been taken we went out for a ride, he on the Softail and me on my Hornet 600; what a contrast! The Hornet, with a puny 599cc (three quarters of one cylinder in the Harley) left the slumbering giant for dead whenever the road opened up, let alone round the corners, and following the Harley on uneven roads I could see it bucking and weaving far more than the Hooner (a 32 deg steering angle doesn't help) but after a session on the Softail's pillion - I wasn't insured to ride, so didn't - it all made perfect sense. -
"Never again" jobs 23 Sep 2006 (Forum)
At this point I started shouting and swearing at the car believing it to be personal. That's when you know you've really had enough! ;-) Anyhow the car is now back together, running and all is well, but what an oddyssey! I have no urge to ever tackle this job again, which for someone who normally enjoys working on cars is quite unusual. That said, it did confirm a couple of things I suspected. -
4 years with a Scenic 14 Jun 2006 (Forum)
The fuel consumption was disapointing at first (28-30) but suddenly kicked up at about 10000 miles (34 round town, 40/42 on a motorway run). Its a bit noisy and boomy and underpowered, but cruises happily at 80/85 all day once wound up. Find it very comfortable and like the driving position despite the reports of people who think its like driving a bus. -
V70 2.4T software tuning: Results 15 Feb 2005 (Forum)
When I was tuning my 1275CC MG Metro from 72 to 90 something horsepower back in the mid Eighties, at great expense and with a lot of time and effort involved, I never would have believed that twenty years later I would plug in a small box, press a button, and two minutes later gain 52bhp and 125NM torque. Well, it really is that easy, now! I've just taken the car for a run, and WOW, what a difference! Always quick, there are now huge, huge, reserves of torque that just pick the car up and hurl it towards the horizon. Seriously prodigious acceleration in second gear gave a clue as to what was coming, even with electronically limited torque in this gear to prevent it being spun away. -
1999 Passat Electrics, niggles 17 Sep 2004 (Forum)
Cool air continues to come out of the vents (although now I think of it, I did wonder on hot days over the summer whether it shouldn't get cooler quicker). Didn't happen again the four times I've started the car since then. I always run the climate control summer and winter, very rarely have it on the "ECON" setting, usually set at 18 or 19 degrees C in summer, 20 or 21 in winter, and I often vary the fan speed. No idea what yesterday's occurrence might be a symptom of, but if anyone else has experienced it before I'd like to know if it led to anything. -
BMW overtakes Mercedes 8 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I present this article for comments from the back room, persoanlly i think BMW's growth is down to an expansion of the brand, 1 series, x3 etc , but i think in the long run they will dilute the quality of the brand my mving into ford focus teritory, also I will be interested to know how they expect to maintain quality control know that they are a volume manufacturer. -
The Speed Camera Thread - Volume 15 5 Dec 2003 (Forum)
At his last court appearance in Barnsley, North persuaded magistrates he was indeed a responsible driver. The court took the unusual step of imposing a driving ban to run concurrent with the ban another court had imposed just two weeks earlier. ?I know it sounds like an excuse,? says North, ?but I am just a hard-working professional who drives a lot of miles. Speed cameras Ho Hum - pasted in full for Ian (CT) and others. -
Diesel Gods, This one is for you 22 Sep 2003 (Forum)
I am sure this engine (the TGD) is not a turbo, and certainly not an electric turbo, and anyway if it was a turbo I would think it would increase power, not reduce it. 4) The car has absolutely nothing else (that I know off) which is connected to the engine drive chain, other than those which are running all the time (like water pump, oil pump). For example with my dad?s car, if you try to steer whilst idling, you can just feel the engine rev dropping because the hydraulic pump kicks in for the PAS, but this car does not have any such devices which can cut in to the engine power and are electronically controller. 5) Since this is certainly related to some electrical thing, because of the relay, the only thing that comes to my mind is that this relay turns on something which absolutely SUCKS all the current and the alternator needs to got overdrive and this causes engine to drop in revs. -
Site Adverts and Pop-ups 26 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Everytime you click on an advert revenue, albeit very small, is generated. That revenue does not, at this time, cover the full costs of running this site. You have a free and, in my opinion, very worthwhile site. Adverts seem a very small price to pay. Conversely, we do appreciate that we are amazingly lucky in the \"quality\" of participant we have. -
Water V Coke 25 Feb 2003 (Forum)
To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains. 9. It will also clean road haze from your windshield. [1] For Your Info 1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. -
Santa's vehicular dilemma 13 Dec 2002 (Forum)
For purposes of comparison, the fastest man-made vehicle, the Ulysses space probe, moves at a poky 27.4 miles per second, and a conventional reindeer can run (at best) 15 miles per hour. III. The payload of the sleigh adds another interesting element. Assuming that each child gets nothing more than a medium sized Lego set (two pounds), the sleigh is carrying over 500 thousand tons, not counting Santa himself. -
Used Market Petrol v Diesel Study 12 Sep 2011 (Forum)
I will take the purchase price, yearly tax, insurance and projected fuel costs into account to examine what it will cost over three years to run these cars in those criterias. Numbers Obviously its impossible to tailor this to everybody but to give us an idea im going to use insurance quotes obtained for me, working on a basis of 10,000 miles a year. -
RIP Diesel Hatchback 20 Jun 2020 (Forum)
Such greats as the Nova 1.5 TD which was the first turbo diesel supermini. It went like a hot hatch from 30-70 yet it would run and run on a thimble of fuel. The 205 1.8D - Well known for doing huge mileages, capable of over 50mpg yet rode as well as a luxury saloon. Citroen AX Diesel - A hoot to drive yet rode really well and could do 70mpg no bother. -
Peugeot 207 1.6Hdi 110bhp Sport - 35,095miles - DPF Removal 16 Oct 2012 (Forum)
We take your DPF off & secure it in our Industrial Pillar Drill & bore it out professionally to the spec of your exhaust system". None of these guarantees were kept so much so that (i) the engine DID NOT run optimally after the DPF was removed & it DID have error faults; (ii) my vehicle DID smoke considerably & this was pointed out to one of his employees; and (iii) they DID hammer & chisel at my car's DPF! -
Citroen ZX - Citroen ZX Turbo Deisel - XUD Head Gasket Repair 1 May 2010 (Forum)
So I replaced that, too. The symptoms remained the same. The car didn’t overheat but did continue to run warmer than usual. The oil and coolant looked clean, but the car did gradually use more and more water. Then one day it blew the bottom radiator hose off. From cold, on tick over, with the radiator cap removed, there was no evidence of bubbles. -
HGV only - HGV shortage 31 Aug 2021 (Forum)
The problem was always funding, when I got mine, funding was available from either the european union, the gov or some companies if you stayed there long enough. Like all crafts, if you do not invest in new talent the well will run dry, so gov funding stopped, even before leaving brexit euro funding stopped, and most but not all companies that used to pay for training stopped doing so. Longer Hours ... Vosa, who are still active within DVSA, state that you are only driivng when the wheels are moving, and because of digital recording can accurately record minute by minute modes ( driving , other work and rest ), this is a big issue and one VOSA have been afraid to address, because their version of "driving" totally contradicts the dictionary definition, and that of the police. -
Three more test drives - Lexus, Peugeot and Skoda 27 Jul 2020 (Forum)
The battery was fully charged, and the electric motor was clearly contributing, but even selecting Electric mode it wouldn't run on electric power alone. I've no idea - nor had the unimpressive salesman - whether this was a feature of the model or faulty French electrics. But the whole point for me of having a PHEV is to do just that. -
Audi Q2 - first 1,000 miles 25 May 2018 (Forum)
It's S-line and 4WD, neither of which I would have insisted on, but they come with the 2-litre engine. So does the DSG (wet-clutch) which works very well. Even on the 30-mile run home from Salisbury Audi (very good handover) it was obvious that both ride and handling were streets ahead of the traded-in V60: a bonus, as one might have expected an improvement in one to be at the expense of the other. -
Hyundai i30 Fastback - Hyundai i30 Fastback 2018 Review 4 Feb 2018 (Forum)
It'll be interetsing to see how well it sells and what discounts can be had, especially as its going up against the ioniq as well in some ways (not the same in terms of performance and higher to buy, but similar in looks and cheaper to run). What do you think about this offering from Hyundai - a bit of a risk, given the Mazda has never sold that well despite its better looks than the hatch (10:1 if I recall correctly - my 12yo one is quite rare) and the relatively high price (£500 more than the hatch, no premium for the Mazda, really good deals on the Leon).
