  • Traffic Light 24 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Hi all, I was wondering exactly how the traffic light cameras work that we see on the roads. The other day, I was driving in an area completely unfamilier to me and being given directions by a friend of mine who failed to mention turn-offs until the last minute.
  • Driving on the Isle of Wight 22 Aug 2005 (Forum)
The roads certainly need a lot of rebuilding to correct settlement, rather than resurfacing. There are a number of speed cameras, some in the oddest places where I felt they were most likely to catch the unwary. I also saw one mobile speed camera as well, on the route to the East Cowes ferry - naughty in my opinion. The other big moan was the public toilets.
  • S-Max (Mk I) 2015 TDCi 163 - Speed index 13 Nov 2019 (Forum)
The particular tyre I would like only comes in a 'V' (149 mph) which is also way above not only my car's limit but also where on earth on our crowded / pot-holed / camera-infested highways would I be able to attain anything like this speed?  Unless I wanted to feature in a police video.  It seems crazy.   I would have thought an 'R' (106 mph) or 'S' (112 mph) would be OK.
  • Speed limit to reduce pollution? 22 Jul 2019 (Forum)
https://www.getsurrey.co.uk/news/surrey-news/a331-speed-limit-reduced-pollution-16201298 I didn't see any fixed or mobile speed cameras and the way that everybody was flashing past me at 70+ either they hadn't seen the new signs or were just ignoring them. I suppose the theory is that vehicles travelling more than 50mph produce more pollution, but on the other hand they are in a particular section of road for less time.
  • Any - Parking Eye Payment by Credit Card 12 May 2018 (Forum)
Yesterday I had the misfortune to use a car park managed by Parking Eye. I saw their cameras after I had entered the car park. I paid the fee online by credit card (mobile telephone internet), they added a 30p service charge, I thought such fees for payment by card are now banned?
  • any - Cars driving down motorway lanes with RED X 22 Dec 2015 (Forum)
The ignorance of drivers on motorways driving down closed motorway lanes is certainley on the increase. Its about time that if you drove past a RED X a camera should prosecute you for everyones saftey. I have seen it so many times but a few days ago was alarming, 5 cars all involved in a pile up were on the hard shoulder, the nearside lane had a red x and plenty of arrows warning drivers to move over lanes.
  • any - Buying Secondhand Cars. Easy !!! 20 Mar 2015 (Forum)
The no no's are you can't sorn it then drive it home, drive it home without taxing it, because the seller has to notify the DVLA incase the new owner gets caught on camera or has an accident or parking fine as these would come back on the old owner. Please comment if I have missed anything.
  • Any - Shocking roadworks 21 Oct 2014 (Forum)
It makes it impossible to work out which lane is which, doubly hard when merging in from one of the slip roads. According to the lane markings there's about 6 lanes! I notice they got the speed cameras up quick enough though, and even placed them on the slip roads that are well away from the main roadworks. And we're stuck with these for the next 2 years.Time to find another route!
  • Speedometer error 26 Aug 2013 (Forum)
My C5 speedometer shows 7 miles below real speed since I had the cambelt changed in October last year. 3 GPS systems agree with actual speed and radars that show your speed too. I recently made a long trip through France were before the sped cameras they had radars that advise your actual speed. I noticed that I was always over the speed limit, (even though it showed the right speed on the clock for the road) and that the difference between my speedometer and my 2 GPS was about 7 to 8 miles difference.
  • 9 points and another speeding ticket! 6 Feb 2013 (Forum)
Apparently when I was flashed I was doing 48 in a 30 zone but as the road is mainly 50 with stretches of 30 this is possible though I cannot honestly remeber seeing a sign or a speed camera. Has anyone out there been in this situation? How did it work out? Is there any approach that I should take to get the courts to go easy on me? I am in my sixties so hardly a boy racer and losing my job at this stage in life I don't fancy my chances of getting another.
  • Any - Polarised lenses 27 Aug 2012 (Forum)
Some of the windscreens are quite strongly tinted and it shows up as a bloom similar to what you sometimes see on camera lenses.  Others are just tinted, but quite darkly. I would be foolish to wear my sunglasses at night, though.  How about the strongly tinted windscreens that I see ?.

I use the car daily on a normal 20 mile commute, no back roads, go through a few towns and a bit of motorway. Get MPG up towards 40 most days as speed cameras etc restrict to 50 mph. I can't see how I should be liable for all costs for a car that was new March 08, has never been loaded towed a caravan etc. Anybody have similar issues with this or the 407 2.2HDi, which I think uses the same clutch?
  • When do Dealers register cars 8 Mar 2009 (Forum)
    If they are using it as a pool car or a staff car (unlikely that a Ford dealer woud use a Corsa as a courtesy car) should they not register it in their name? The camera is around 30 miles from the dealer so unlikely to be a test drive! Are there rules on when a Dealer has to register cars they are using?????? {typo in header corrected}
  • HJ news - threat to GPS in Europe 29 Jul 2008 (Forum)
In an (uncharacteristically coherent) article from today's HJ News section, we are told that Sat nav systems which warn of FIXED speed cameras are already banned in 8 European countries. Some countries merely insist the "Points of Interest" feature be switched off, meaning that you may drive past any number of towns with muesums, castles or Michelin starred restaurants but may not let your TomTom tell you their name or phone number as you do so.
  • Foreign plates 20 Dec 2007 (Forum)
many of the Eastern Bloc cars are badly maintained & driven . These plates already offer immunity from parking tickets / speed cameras & the congestion charge . If my 80's diesel US pick up ( UK plated ) gets slapped with a huge road tax liability , what's stopping me from registering it say in Poland - it's already a left - hooker ?
  • NIP 14 Day rule 25 Oct 2007 (Forum)
the only thing i can come up with is that this is a lease car and they would have had to get the details from the leasing company - although i wasn't driving as the missus was as the time. i've checked the camera to make sure it's calibrated and it is but is it worth taking the 3points/£60 or have i got something to go back to them with and stand a very good chance of winning? thanks
  • Silver on black number plates 8 Aug 2007 (Forum)
They have been a mixed bunch - a few yoofs in their Corsas and Saxos, but also older people in very young Mercs, BMWs et al. Also tended to be silver or black paint to match the plates. Do they think that cameras etc won't pick them up, I wonder?! I can understand why they fit them from an asthetic point of view, but you would think that they are making themselves stand out a tad too much. Oh, silly me, we don't have traffic police to have a quiet word, do we.
  • Modern Car Crash Safety 20 Jul 2007 (Forum)
There was a stark reminder of the weakness of old cars compared to the modern car NCAP crash test results we often see, in Roehampton last night. An old (proper) Mini had hit a lamp post, just 2 lamp posts after a speed camera in a 30 mph limit, during the afternoon rush - so its probably fairly safe to assume the driver wasn't speeding. The way the car folded up at (presumably 30) was shocking, and I fear the driver must have been injured.
  • Variable Speed Limts - M25 and M42 17 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Can anyone shed light on whether there are actually cameras on each gantry in the variable speed limit sections of the M25 and M42. And do they actually book people? Or are they on some of them only. Or perhaps none at all. The reason I ask is that I have cause to drive through the M42 stretch quite a lot, mostly later at night when the motorway is quite quiet and I always seem to be the only driver on there who worries about sticking to the limit.
