  • has your car done you proud? 26 Jun 2003 (Forum)
t fall to bits or rather blow to bits. One thing that I never forget is that last year I had a long running dispute with my opposite neighbour on parking issues and meanwhile I was doing some building work so I had things come and go. One day I had a skip (midi size- ones about the size of your normal car) and the driver could not steer the truck into my drive so left it of the left hand side of my drive gate.
  • Do we molly-coddle cars ? 12 Dec 2002 (Forum)
-this was or that wax -this bulb or that bulb -endless additives Well, not me. My cars get serviced when something doesn't work or they don't run right; they get an oil change if and when they get a service; virtually any noise can be ignored or covered by increased cd player volume and you get used to it in time anyway; the brake discs would need to be in pieces before they got renewed; the punctured tyre gets replaced on its own, the others can get used to it and who gives a stuff what angle the steering wheel is at as long as the thing goes in straight lines, except when you would prefer it turned corners; as long as the car is level and not making bangs, then the suspension is clearly ok; if it gets a wash, which frankly isn't that likely, it'll get the nearest, convenient automatic car wash and be grateful for it; it gets petrol from whichever pump I stopped next to from whichever gas station I happened to be near when the fuel light started flashing; and if I need to start it cold, move it 2 ft and switch it off again it can damn well get over itself and start again when I need it whether the cat likes it or not.
  • my 'what car'question 7 Oct 2002 (Forum)
I know that the fact that it’s diesel cuts some costs – at least I think so, am currently conducting a completely non-scientific experiment to see how much the fuel-cost difference is between my 1.1 petrol, and my 1.7 diesel – at the moment they seem to be vying neck-and-neck. All things like running costs, part costs, reliability, I need to consider really carefully. Oh and by the way, my alternative to keeping said Astra is borrowing (yes really)500 pounds and trying to find best car for that price that I can get.
  • X5 - what's it for? 8 Jun 2002 (Forum)
It couldn't be parked in a normal slot and have passengers exit easily on both sides. Leaving the passenger seat was uncomfortable and arkward and the running boards left wet muddy marks on the trousers. After our meeting, it was time to fill up and head north. The extravagant £67 worth of petrol equated to an outrageous 17.5 mpg. 12 hours after we set off, we returned to Scotch Corner and motoring sanity in the shape of the trusty Synergie.

Derek Turner, managing director of TfL Street Management, announced: "This scheme is vital to keep public transport running smoothly and we are pleased with the feedback we've received. "Initial problems have been resolved and it is evident that buses, coaches, taxis and cyclists have all experienced considerable benefits and will now continue to do so."
  • Have things gotten this bad in the UK courts yet? 12 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Kathleen Robertson of Austin, Texas, was awarded $780,000 by a jury of her peers after breaking her ankle tripping over a toddler who was running amok inside a furniture store. The owners of the store were understandably surprised at the verdict, considering the misbehaving little kid was Ms. Robertson's son. Nineteen-year-old Carl Truman of Los Angeles won $74,000 and medical expenses when his neighbor ran over his hand with a Honda Accord.
  • BMW 3-Series E90 (2005 - ) - 325d SE Day 1 - Collection 29 Mar 2008 (Forum)
It'll be a few thousand, I expect, before it begins to find its stride. The test drive car pulled like a locomotive. HJ's guide to running in a diesel recommends 3000rpm max for the first thousand miles. It's going to be quite easy to keep it down to that. In fact it will be difficult to open it up progressively to the recommended 4500 and beyond eventually.
  • 4 Months with the Corolla ST 29 Sep 2025 (Forum)
As for economy my spreadsheet says 62 mpg and the dash also says 62mpg, very happy with that. On the run up to Aviemore (430 miles) most of which is on motorways (M1, M62, M61, M6, M74) and dual carriageways (A9) we cruised at 72 mph on the speedo and averaged just about 60 mpg (dash and calculated). The Toyota Forum insists in that type of use a 2 litre will only average mid to high 40's whereas the 1.8 will average 60+, shows how much they know.
  • Mazda CX-30 - Anything better than CX-30 in the same price rang? 29 Jun 2024 (Forum)
Would like to keep the car as long as possible (like 10 years or so). Requirements in order: 1. comfort, 2. reliability, 3.running cost, 4. car price Have been already seen and test drive Pegout 2008,  Vauxhall Mokka, Mazda CX-30. The 2008 quiet comfy and agile, don't like the cockpit looks, just very odd for me.
  • Used Car Under £4k 5 Jun 2023 (Forum)
My situation now is that I'm not doing much mileage so MPG isn't a big deal but still happy to consider a diesel as it will have a decent run every now and again. Insurance costs aren't a concern. I'm at an age now where I could probably drive anything for a decent enough cost. Speaking of age, I'm at the point, for the first time in donkeys years, where the kids aren't bleeding us dry so if there was ever a time to treat myself with a car I could never have previously afforded then now is the time (I'm not prepared to get a car on finance though so my purchase budget is strict give or take a couple of hundred pounds).
  • Going electric? 29 Mar 2022 (Forum)
No worries about problems as they’d be brand new and covered by warranty for most of the ownership term. The only sensible way to run them or most pricey new cars at the moment is via a contract lease as the leasing firms get huge discounts on the cars from the manufacturers. It typically costs £60/£70 a month less than a PCP and ends in exactly the same way with you handing the car back at the end with no money left in it.
  • Compact SUV Possibly Hybrid - Please Clue Me Up 13 Aug 2021 (Forum)
Should add this is for two smallish sized adults approaching retirement age, no kids or dogs to accommodate or lots of luggage, although I do like a tip run every now and then I can't make my mind up whether to spend around the £10,000 on something as a bit of a stop gap and see how technology and tax bands go, or double that plus a bit and go for something like a Toyota C-HR 1.8 excel 2020 with low mileage, or a Hyundai Kona  1.6 hybrid 2021 around the same money.
  • Citroen C3 Picasso - Grounds to return a used car for a refund? 24 Mar 2020 (Forum)
I do not want to drive the car with a engine management light on and as a result have had to cancel my entire clinic tomorrow (I run my own business) as I cannot get to my remote location (on top of the 2 days off I have already had to take). Given my issues so far do you think it is reasonable for me to request a refund under the Consumer Care act or am I being unreasonable?
  • Octavia Estate - Stick with petrol/diesel or change to hybrid? 26 Oct 2018 (Forum)
I'm now seriously think hybrid, not just for the economy of running the vehicle but with the gradual phasing out of diesel/petrol cars I'd like to get on board before prices start to spiral. It's already noticeable that in France new petrol car prices have increased quite a bit, along with hybrid & electric, whilst diesels have decreased a little.
  • Honda CRV - Issues with used car from large dealer chain 29 Sep 2018 (Forum)
I've spoken to the dealer but they want me to process the check/repairs through the Inchcape warranty I purchased rather than any other method. I like the car, run out model spec, colour and 1 owner, low mileage but the receipt for BCA transport from Blackbushe makes me think this was something an Inchcape buyer picked up cheap and shipped up to the Midlands (the original owner was SW London).
  • Trouble with used car bought from dealer - help! 11 May 2018 (Forum)
I have never been contacted by the dealership at any point about when I will recieve the car back and would have been left in the dark for over a month had I not contacted them first. My patience has run out with this situation now, it’s already been over 5 weeks and will be 6 with no work having commenced on the car. I am using a borrowed car which needs returning and have no other way of commuting to my new job which I start in 2 weeks’ time.
  • Toyota Yaris - New car - first week review 7 Apr 2018 (Forum)
DAB radio Excellent mpg – early days, but so far it looks like 45 around town, 50 on motorway.  I have no reason to doubt it will get 60mpg on a decent cross country run.   Seats are very comfortable and rear legroom is very generous for a small car. Lots of boot space which is nice and deep.  A false floor is available but we won’t find one necessary.
  • Mercedes B class 180d AMG - Quick review. 17 Feb 2018 (Forum)
The 18 inch wheels and sports suspension handle potholes quite well, but road noise is noticeable. Typical diesel rattle when ticking over, but fine once running. Interior is all black, including headlining and its depressing. now the sandwich floor has gone it no longer has an MPV style higher seating position. Its an A class with a higher roof. In short a vast improvement in terms of interior finish, refinement, but poorly equipped for such an expensive car and far too complicated to operate systems whilst driving.
  • Honda Civic - Is this car a good buy / fair price? 15 Oct 2017 (Forum)
I don't mind stumping up and paying the amount, but am wondering whether I would be foolish in paying £750 over the trade price for a private purchase, where there is no comeback. Particularly given it's low running of 3000 - 4000 miles a year for the last 4 years. What are peoples thoughts on this? Is it worth going for this car, or should I wait a bit and see if I can get a better car for my money?
  • Mazda 6 saloon sport 165 ps petrol - Mazda 6 sport 2 ltr Petrol mpg trip report 3 Sep 2017 (Forum)
I get 43/44 mpg and that is brim to brim fuel measure, it can go down but not under 41, no commuting, avoid traveling around rush hour etc. I hope this post gives a reasonable account of running a modern 2 ltr petrol N/Aspirated large saloon, and I have stated measurements to be either 'indicated' or brim to brim,  however to recommend it for commuting I can't as I haven't. I should add that air conditioning was on, but it does not appear to make any difference to mpg, probably due to the Capacitor that provides the electric?
