Honest John's Motoring Agony Column 13-6-2015 13 Jun 2015 (News)
Does the modern petrol engine in my Lexus RX take time to adjust the ECU, does it happen instantly or does something else need to be done? PC, St Albans All modern engines are optimised for the best fuel in order to get the best results in the ECDC tests. On standard fuels they don't run as well. Limp excuses I have a 2008 Volvo C30, which has developed a fault that the garage seems unable to find. The car will suddenly flag up a warning saying "Reduced Engine Performance" and then it goes into Limp mode. If I pull over and switch off, and re-start it will normally clear and run normally. This can happen 4 - 5 times over the first 10 miles and then it seems to clear, although it will happen once or twice again on a long journey. The garage has changed the fuel filter and also the Mass Air Flow sensor, but still the problem is there. Any ideas as to what might be causing this? -

Auto biographic In January I filled up at our local Eastbourne Tesco filling station as usual but a few days later, I noticed the car was performing badly with a loss of power. My local Toyota dealer diagnosed contaminated fuel. The head mechanic who carried out the work advised me that the fuel filter was particularly bad and the fuel was the wrong colour and consistency. The repair bill was £438.29 and with cost of the fuel, I claimed £500 from Tesco. -

All new cars are optimised and calibrated for the ECDC economy and CO2 lab tests on the highest grade fuels available, which are usually Shell V-Power Nitro Plus petrol and diesel. Consequently, if you use an inferior fuel, the performance of the engine and its fuel economy and emissions will be inferior Slipping beauty My three and a half year old MINI One has what feels like a slipping clutch. -

Frequently asked questions about your premiums 4 Apr 2013 (News)
Frequently asked questions about your premiums Motor Insurance; without doubt one of the elements of driving that attracts a good feeling of resentment. Yes it’s a running cost, like fuel, tyres, etc etc, but unlike these thinks, most of us pay for 12 months of something invisible, which is where, I believe the psychological angst we have towards Insurance and Insurers stems from. We see the tyres we buy, we see the fuel gauge creep up, but with Insurance, all we get is that letter, a few days after shelling out a tidy sum of money. Perhaps if we were provided with a translucent inflatable bubble to wrap the car in we’d feel better… There are many feelings and misconceptions aimed towards Insurance; “I’ve paid £xxxx.xx amount of the years and never claimed”, “I’m paying more than the car’s worth”, “It should be cheaper, it’s a smaller engine than the one I’ve had previously”. -
Outrage at plans for £4500 a year ‘modern classic tax’ in the capital 18 Jun 2018 (News)
That would bring the price of owning a classic car in the capital up to almost £4500 a year before the cost of fuel, tax and insurance. While the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs (FBHVC) has campaigned hard to ensure owners of Vehicles of Historic Interest get dispensation under the new rules, any exemption will only apply to cars that are 40 years old or more - putting thousands of Eighties, Nineties and 21 st century classics at risk. -

Ten Ferraris in Historics Brooklands Auction on 18th May 12 May 2011 (News)
Borrowing traits from both the Daytona and the Dino, Ferrari’s first Boxer, the 365 GT4 BB – with the flat-12 engine mounted longitudinally rather than transversely – was replaced in 1976 by the 512BB which sported a larger 4,942cc engine, dual plate clutch and dry sump lubrication that highlighted its impressive performance. The Bosch K-Jetronic CIS fuel injected engine was introduced in 1981 to the last of the 512 series, and as such the 512BBi has become highly collectable. With chassis 46753 for sale at Historics auction next week being one of just 42 UK right-hand-drive cars produced, and widely considered as one of the lowest mileage cars of its kind available today – covering just 13,000 miles since new – the 1983 512BBi is likely to entice bids in excess of £85,000. -
