Diesel - Remapping remappers 29 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Knowing that these engines are the Alfa/Fiat 1.9td 16v 150 BHP, and also used by Saab, but all have different ECU's. Are Vauxhalls the only models that have this remapping and with a push of a button choose your power boost and also not effecting your Warranty. Does anyone do this for the Alfa/Fiat and Saab models. ?? -
Dead 306 any ideas? 5 Jan 2007 (Forum)
I have just heard from the garage that my 306 is beyond economical repair as the ECU and coils have failed (aparently a common problem with the 1.4). I am resigned to the fact that a new car will be on the cards but am not sure how to dispose of the old one. The garage suggested that I call the local council (Hammersmith and Fulham) who will take it away for free, however the cheapskate in me feels I should be able to get something for it! -
Warranty Purchase 7 Dec 2006 (Forum)
If you have a car you expect bills - a few Hundred pounds is not unsual but where it really hurts is if on a 3/4/5 year old car the Engine goes bang, the auto box refuses to change up/down, the ABS Pump does not. The ECU decides it has had its day. If this was possible to get such cover the premiums might be a more manageable amount (£200 / £300 / yr rather than £700+) and have sufficient cover to cover a wider range of faults -
Clicking from elec cooling fan - Mondeo 21 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Not a major issue however I have noticed recently that when I switch the Mondeo off and both cooling fans are running, i.e when the climate is on, the fans run on for a few secs before the ECU turns them off (which is normal) however one fan clicks as it spools down. I have checked for leaves and twigs etc though there is nothing fouling the blades. There is no sign of clicking when it is running, no additional vibration through the cowling and the motor in question does not get any warmer than the other one, could it perhaps be a sign that the motor is getting worn, perhaps the brushes are getting to the end of their life? -

Golf MK4 engine knocking/whirring noise 10 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Hi I have just had the ecu replaced on my 99 golf along with CAT and O2 sensors. (engine emission problem). Since getting the car back i have noticed a knocking noise including some pedal movement when driving slowly in 1st or 2nd gear. -
306 1.4 petrol won't start when warm 19 Aug 2005 (Forum)
There is a petrol smell when turning over, while it refuses to start. First instinct is immobiliser, but would the ECU continue to pump fuel into the engine? Second thought therefore is a sticky ignition relay, but why would this be temperature related? Third thought is cold-start-valve/regulator-thingy, but why would it suddenly work when ignition turned back off and on? -
Sluggish Acceleration With Fiesta 14 Aug 2005 (Forum)
The car has quite suddenly developed a problem which causes sluggish acceleration both from a standing start and when moving up through the gear box. I know it could be a whole host of things from simply needing a new set of plugs to a faulty ECU and anything in between. I guess what I really asking people to do is give me some idea what the 'in between' stuff might be. (I've changed the plugs and leads all to no avail). It's a very open ended question and I appreciate that but if folks could give me some pointers I'd appreciate it - any comments would be appreciated, John -
Vauxhall Corsa 96 1.4i engine fault lamp 30 Mar 2005 (Forum)
New spark plugs, oil change, injector cleaner, the car improves, until this evening and the fault code 28 returns. Does anyone have any idea of what to look at next? Also, how does the ECU know if there is a problem with the contacts in the relay? Thanks... Damien. -
Volvo 940 '!' warning light , £4.95 chip 22 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Also seen a 'chip' for £4.95 that claims to boost power by 20BHP - a piggy back device ''externally alters one or more signals sent to the Volvo 940 ECU'' Can it be any good for a fiver ?????????? Many thanks Paul Paul {Forest of Bowland} -
Vauxhall Carlton starting problem HELP!! 17 Aug 2004 (Forum)
We have used the diagnostic connector shorting technique and the blink code read is indeed a crank sensor failure. I believe this code can be set by other issues that force the ECU to indict the Crank but I do not know which ones. Does anyone in the BR have any advice on what we can try next to solve the problem, (other that scrap the car, which is a serious option if we cannot fix it). -
Electromagnetic Battery Discharge 9 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Alarms and immobilisers are also affected. I can understand how poorly designed alarms/immobilisers/ECUs etc. are affected by EMI, but batteries? The only thing I can think of is that the EMI was causing lights or other circuits to be switched on but there was no indication that the alarm had been activated. -

Engine chirrup 27 Sep 2002 (Forum)
If l turn the boost down the problem seems less prevalent. I initially thought this could be the engine ECU boost pressure limiter kicking in, but l am also wondering if the fuel pump is unable to meet a sudden increase in fuel demand. Basically l don't know. Any info would be gratefully received. Dan -
K reg escort 1.4 CVH 10 Sep 2002 (Forum)
To date the following have been replaced: stepper motor (with a scrap yard item) map sensor temp sensor. Recent tests on a ford ecu computer showed no faults (s**s law played its part that day i'd suggest), but our questions lie mainly with the stepper motor given it's origins. Has anyone had any experience with these engines? -
1990 Rover 214SLI starting problem 14 Aug 2002 (Forum)
Drove it to Crown Rover in Soham (of abduction fame) for them to check out, suspecting it needed a new ECU. They could find no fault at all. Apparently, they have seen the identical fault on two other similar cars since the torrential rain last week. Just to let you know that it is pretty benign - just leave the car to dry out completely in a dry warm garage, and all should be well! -
jetta ignition problem 3 Nov 2001 (Forum)
The Crypton tester shows an intermittent (every 10 to 40 seconds) loss of spark, the Crypton signal "breaking down in the middle of the scale as if turning up a resistor in the ignition circuit". He has borrowed the following components from other vehicles: coil, ECU, amplifier, leads and has fitted a new distributor, all to no effect. He is now suggesting there may be a fault in the loom. Any suggestions would be very welcome! -
rangerover c/locking and idling 28 Sep 2001 (Forum)
Can I continue to live with this, or is it a sign of worse to come? I seem to remember that there is a separate ecu for central locking??? and, in damp weather (this could be a coincidence) when I start it up sometimes the revs just sink down to zero and it conks out. After a minute or so of running there isnt a problem, although (there's always an "although") the idling is a tiny bit uneven and there is a slight flat spot on first accelaration. -
Short Journeys 16 Feb 2001 (Forum)
Further to your recent comments about car use in the Daily Telegraph, that modern cars with ECUs should not be used on short trips: Short journeys are a fact of life in today's motoring. It is not up to the Motorist to change his lifestyle; rather it is for the car manufacturers to design their vehicles to cope with the demands of their customers.
