  • Renault Megane 1.4 overheating 19 Mar 2007 (Forum)
I recently purchased a renault megane 1.4 Rt, with 65k (serviced and 12 months mot). It's been running fine, but today I went to pick a friend up from the airport, and the cars temperature was very high after getting home after about 2 1/2 hours. The temperature light came on, and I stopped the car, and gradually let it cool down to about half enough to get it home.
  • Interesting statement re Road pricing 20 Feb 2007 (Forum)
http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roads/roadpricing/feasibilitystudy/studyreport/annexjcosts Now, an interesting statement is posted below Of course, any scheme that involves using sophisticated technology to charge up to 30 million users is inevitably going to be expensive. While we anticipate that the costs of setting up and running a national road charging scheme will fall, they will remain substantial. J.43 However, the modelling work that we have done demonstrates that the benefits of road charging could be equally substantial, indeed, in many cases, that they could easily outweigh the admittedly large costs.
  • MPG Caps 16 Feb 2007 (Forum)
I am one of the most cynical people that you will ever find regarding such things, but a quick google around did find some people that have had very good results from using them (supposedly), but of course they could be completely bogus. I have 7 vehicles that run on diesel (including Arnie) and a saving on my fuel bills would be very acceptable - but usually when something souunds to good to be true, it usually is. He's offered me some tablets to try so that i can see for myself (sounds a bit drug dealerish doesn't it), but I'm not so keen to try something that may damage an engine.
  • Best Prices For New Tyres 12 Feb 2007 (Forum)

  • car damaged in own drive! 7 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Yesterday my neighbour crashed her car into mine while it was parked on my half of a a large shared drive. She accepts full responsability but the problem is that my car is an 18 year old Mercedes. Yes, I know its old but it is in,until now, pristine condition with no rust and runs better, smoother and quieter than most other modern cars I've been in and i've looked after it for the last ten years. The insurance company deems it unecconomical to repair, even without viewing it (its the rear light cluster and rear side wing that is damaged and I'm guessing £300 to repair) and wants to send an accessor to make a cash offer.
  • The dim pedestrians 5 Feb 2007 (Forum)
I'd just come back from the tip with the trailer on and there was a Scenic parked nearly opposite my gate, preventing me from doing my normal nifty reverse into the yard. There was a group of 2 adults and an infant approaching from the front and I would block the single-track road that runs past our house when I stopped. So I pulled in hard to the left leaving the nearside rear corner of the car just inside the gate with the left indicator on, unhitched the trailer and wheeled it across the yard, jumped back in the car and selected reverse.
  • Knackerd steering due to humps 26 Nov 2006 (Forum)
My Nissan in Thailand is an excellent car but lacks the dynamics of a SAAB or Audi, the Isuzu pickup has now reached 250,000 miles on original engine and gearbox, superb machine tough as old boots on or off road. My dads SAAB 900 V6 is 10 years old but superb, a minter, it will run for 20years. My brother swears by the Kia he does a very high mileage his only gripe is the suspension wear that I mentioned above. My mums Fiat is lively realiable and fun. Local Fiat dealers are cheap for service.except for replacement keys.Transponder keys for Fiat are very expensive if you can get them.
  • Toyota Estima Enima Turbo 17 Nov 2006 (Forum)
However, it appears to have a fault which no garage or petrol-head friend has been able to diagnose. The car always starts first time, runs great, and has never broken down. The car is a 2.2 diesel turbo: when the turbo is demanded a green light comes on in the dashboard to indicate normal turbo operation. From a cold start, the green light comes on & off as normal for about 20 minutes / 20 - 30 miles of driving.
  • Old large diesel estate 11 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Also the Citroen CX doesnt appear because I owned one of them and it was a nightmare. Id also be interested in any petrol options that can get near the diesel economy, but they must run on unleaded. Thanks!
  • Subaru, Seat or Skoda ? 24 Sep 2006 (Forum)
After the best part of a decade running Legacy estates, I sold my last one privately 18 months ago as my business, a retail store, meant that 6 days a week I ran my trusty VW Transporter and the Legacy spent most of the time sitting in my garage.
  • Computer Related Questions - Volume 102 24 Sep 2006 (Forum)
It's a PC running Windows ME (so you can probably guess how old it is). For the second time in the last six months I've lost sound. Last time I just downloaded some new drivers and that solved it. That doesn't seem to have worked this time - when I go into the sound properties there is no preferred device for playback, and nothing to choose from.
  • Out of harm's way 30 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Now it is quiet, the weather clement, people gathering in the street for today's 'children's parade', a quieter dry run for tomorrow's real thing. That will pass in a miasma of rum, weed and glorious clamour. People will come to the house. On Tuesday the streets will be physically dirty but spiritually clean, evil spirits having been thrust back for another year.
  • ABS fault - VW LT28 van 20 Aug 2006 (Forum)
    I've replaced the ABS unit, (with a known good one), bled the brakes, and adjusted the n/s/r sensor to ring clearance. The problem persists. The local VW dealer has been helpful, but - like me - have run out of suggestions and opinions. Can anyone help ? {vehicle details added to subject header - DD}
  • Insurance Quandary 15 Aug 2006 (Forum)
In the Telegraph motoring, in HJ's FAQs and I think in the Back Room, Primo plc have been mentioned as offering car insurances policies designed for drivers like me searching for reasonable quotes at renewal time. I have two policies running at the moment: - One has 8 years no claims discount with my sister as the main driver and me as the policy holder; - One has three years no claims discount and has me as both the main driver and policy holder.
  • Image - why is this country so obsessed? 6 Aug 2006 (Forum)
I've also travelled a lot in Germany and it always strikes me there how different they are too. True, BMWs and Mercs are still seen as a cut above but VWs are totally run of the mill. That's why they sell thousands upon thousands of them every month. The reason for my post was why are we so obsessed with image when other countries don't seem to be that fussed? Why do we seem to think that VW is upmarket when the rest of Europe see them as runabouts?
  • Citroen Dispatch HDi under fueling?? 23 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Citroen Dispatch Hdi (94bhp with intercooler), 128,000miles. It feels very down on power compared to 1.9TD models, after adding injector cleaner, or on a long run (often towing) it can get better (will hold 70mph uphill rather than slowing to 55 when towing 1300kg trailer/car combo). Virtually no visible smoke, starts first time every time. Sounds like a bag of nails sometimes until about 3000rpm.
  • Diesel variability 25 May 2006 (Forum)
Haven't had a chance to investigate any acceleration numbers, but it's a really quite surprisingly large difference, and won?t know mpg until I?ve run the tank dry, so can?t comment. I better not name the chain ?cos of naming and shaming. Is this a common thing? Do others find this? Or has my car just broken and I'm blaming it on the diesel? Or have I just gone mad?
  • Coolant - Visit Dealer? Astra-G, 1.4 28 Apr 2006 (Forum)
Thats what my manual recommends - but as I'm capable of putting oil in my car, I wondered whether there was anything special that needed doing to the coolant other than just the correct amount of antifreeze added - as until my problem is solved its gonna cost me a fortune to get garages to do this for me and I'd much prefer to do myself. It does mention that its pressurised while running - does this affect anything? Sorry for being a bit dense when it comes to mechanical things - just trying to keep my pennies for myself not for garages getting money for nothing.
  • Merc W124 300D engine spec for project 10 Apr 2006 (Forum)
In case you're wondering why, I'm researching the viability of using this engine for a project - a big three seater motortrike to run on biodiesel! Hence my preference for an engine that's not overly complicated. Any comments and recommendations are also welcome. -- andymc Vroom, vroom - mmm, doughnuts ...
  • Vauxhall 14XE engine - a lemon? 10 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Very intermittent and occurs under all conditions; high or low engine speed, during warm up and when at normal temp, on long or short runs and low or high ambient temperatures. I've been told that there is an ECU upgrade for this engine; anyone know anything about this? Thanx in advance.
