  • Sloping windscreens 7 Mar 2008 (Forum)
I've noticed that a lot of new cars seem to have very slopey windscreens. I believe it's for pedestrian safety. Whenever I get in these cars it feels really horrible though, and visibility seems to be really bad. Judging the end of the bonnet seems to be guess work (for me at least) and the pillars can hide a lot!

  • Damage from road chipping 4 Mar 2004 (Forum)
My brother was driving his well cared for Audi A4 towards a roundabout. The road had been covered with the sharp chippings that are to prevent skidding. He heard a terrific noice underneath the car form the chippings. When he got home he noticed that the whole front of the car and the windscreen had been peppered with these chippings. The local highway departement claim that signs were put up and the contractors would sweep the road.He said the sign was not there on the day he was on the road The estimate to fix the paintwork excluding the windscreen is over £1000.

Does any car have heat relective glass fitted as an option, and is this the same thing I have seen on Renaults when they have a silver/purple tint to their front screen?

Merry Christmas all. Im trying desperatly to sort my windscreen. The car is only 3 years old with 20.000 miles. It had brand new bosch aero wipers on last month.  Before i put them on I cleaned the screen thoroughly but still get a really annoying smear on the down swipe right in front of the drivers view.

  • Any - Windscreen smeary/hazy inside? (not an advert HJ!) 5 Jul 2019 (Forum)
I watched a Youtube video from the US and the guy explained why your screen gets that haze on the inside -  the oils in the plastics near the screen are evaporated out by sunshine heat and deposited on the inside of the screen. Ok i've previously heard about the plasticizers in plastics causing the plume of haze on the screen from the demist outlets - but not the oils. He then went on to recommend using one of those eraser sponges to get rid of the oil residue before polishing the screen.

  • Windscreen repair 11 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Slightly tricky question to ask here, because of the house rules on naming companies negatively, but let's see how it goes. 100 yards from work this morning and a six inch crack appeared in the windscreen in front of me. My insurance will do the usual "get it repaired and you just pay the excess". Do I go with one of the large companies that advertise on tv or through my dealer, do we think? And if as I suspect the answer is the former then I'm reading horror stories about one of the most obvious ones, but don't know whether to take such internet white noise seriously or just ring up and hope it will all be ok.

  • Ford Focus Mk 2 Petrol - Could this be an electrical problem? 18 Aug 2013 (Forum)

Fuel consumption seemed fine until a friend asked about it... now think it is going down quicker but maybe just mind playing tricks.
  • Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 97 Water getting in 19 Jan 2010 (Forum)
My wife owns a R registered Ford Fiesta Ghia with only 50,000 miles on the clock. Excellent car and she does not want to scrap it out!! BUT ...... it keeps filling up with water!!! It seems that a design fault on this model means that water that goes down the gully in front of the windscreen cannot get out via the drain holes and when heavy rain is experienced overflows into the car soaking the front carpets.
  • Windscreen + Glass - Enhanced Driving Visibility 29 Jun 2011 (Forum)
Some wag once wrote in HJ section of Telegraph suggesting toothpaste to clean windscreens and I was dumb enough to try it (not with a toothbrush though). HJ's slot has over the years repeated tips for car body wash+wax and favoured (best?) brand, but little or on the most important bit - the windscreen.
  • Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - 2002 1.9TDI Temperature reading zero & no heating 29 May 2008 (Forum)
I have a 2002 VW Passat TDI (130bhp) I noticed on the drive home tonight that the temperature gauge was reading zero. I immediately checked whether the heating worked. It doesn't. The air is cool at best and on auto (climatronic) the front vents are pumping no air at all. I have checked the coolant level and that all seems fine. Any ideas please?
  • VW Golf 1.9 TDI 1999 - rear window leakage, no elec windows/central lock 19 Apr 2011 (Forum)
It has been like this for a week now and i got my mate to look at it and he did some tests. He checked the windscreen wash and noticed it was getting low so he topped it up and checked the front windscreen was wipers and they was fine however the rear wiper works but no fluid. i noticed a bit of the fluid on the floor from under the bonnet but i saw him spill some so just ignored it until today i tried it again and then the car now says no windscreen fluid, under the bonnet was heaps of the liquid.

CD / XS / SE? We currently run a Subaru Forester 2.0 AWD GLS with the All Weather pack (heated front seats, heated front screen e.t.c) which will have to go as it's a bit too thirsty but we still want to retain some of the luxuries that we've had for the past 3.5 years we've had the Forester.
