Good salesmen - Skoda and MINI 25 Jun 2006 (Forum)
SWMBO and I had a happy morning today firstly trying an Octavia vRS (a possibly replacement in a few months if the B-class still fails to inspire affection) - Roy at Jacksons (Basingstoke) was an excellent salesman and gave us a good test run, knew his product and had the sense to tell us that there was a vRS 170 bhp diesel coming in September which might be worth waiting for. If I do go for a Skoda, Jackson will have the business: they did a far better quote than others I tried when considering an Octavia a few months ago and ended up with the German taxi. -
advice on purchase 19 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Prices for mx5s seem to be all over the shop. We looked at a very tatty 1992 eunos that was up for £3500, with MOT about to run out, faded paint & requiring new front discs! All advice appreciated!! -- Dr Alex Mears MG BGT 1971 If you are in a hole stop digging...unless you are a miner. -
Legacy/Forester readers mpg 27 May 2006 (Forum)
Can anyone tell me accurately what mpg they have been getting - i.e. from brimming the tank, and logging mileage and volume of fuel filled with. a local mechanic said his 2.5auto struggled to get even 25mpg on a long run, and range with the fuel tank was rubbish as tank is really too small for these vehicles with their poor mpg. I would be looking at a forester 2.0 auto , or a legacy 2.2 or 2.5 auto. I need an estate or small mpv that will occaisionally tow a large 4 berth caravan, but still nice for the "man about town" to drive the rest of the year. -
Traffic woes - your advise please 21 May 2006 (Forum)
No one will let you merge in further on thinking you are pushing in. I do in fact go all the way round and have a free run right up to point C where all hell breaks out and I'm the cause of road rage for pushing in. What should I do? Both options are legal but It's becoming a real problem to face this junction each day. -
New Car for Aged Parents 19 May 2006 (Forum)
They also own a small Seat which is used for most of the short local journeys so the replacement would be mostly used for longer cross country trips (mostly A roads as my mum dislikes the speed of motorways and my dad dislikes being told he's going too fast at 65mph). Purchase price is not a major issue but running costs in terms of tax, fuel consumption and servicing are. Neither have any interest in gadgets such as sat nav, cruise control, etc although air conditioning is a must. I'm sure there will be more wants/needs over the next few months but from what they've come up with already, are there any suggestions where to start? -
how many MPG does your car really get? 14 May 2006 (Forum)
"And under these guidelines by the Environmental Protection Agency, carmakers are allowed to test miles per gallon by running the vehicle not on the road, but on what's essentially a treadmill for cars. During an EPA spot check, the car ran with no air conditioning, no inclines or hills, no wind resistance and at speeds no greater than 60 mph." -
Remember separate starting solenoids? 8 May 2006 (Forum)
To double check I repeated the whole process, again the starter would only turn when the headlamps were on. Now that the car has been run up and is out in the sunshine everything is working normally, but what happened originally? The starting circuit is ridiculously simple; an ignition controlled supply feeds the separate solenoid ( unfortunately not the type with a rubber push button ) via the push type starter button. -
Free car Pug 405 7 May 2006 (Forum)
MOT until 2nd June, no tax (put 6 months on only a couple of weeks ago but will need to claim back as have just bought a new car which needs to be taxed!). Can't afford to run 2 cars after buying new vehicle yesterday, and rather than scrap it I thought it might as well go to a good home. Mechanic thinks it should go through MOT ok the only thing he was doubtful of is the handbrake which may need cable adjustment. -
Sharan Sport TDii 20 Apr 2006 (Forum)
A few weeks later the same thing happened and reappeared every few weeks or so. As it was due a service I had the guys run a diagnostic check but they could find no problem. The problem now is more serious in that the judder seems to have been replaced by loss of power. This can happen on a motorway or anywhere and usually occurs climbing a hill, regardless of gear. -
Rover 214 Advice Please! 14 Feb 2006 (Forum)
But really, I dont want to buy the car and discover loads of unwanted problems, so if someone could just give me a straight answer as to whether getting a 214 is a wise move, then I'd be grateful. No car is perfect, but I dont want to be stuck with something that is a constant pain and run out of money to keep going lol. Cheers! -
VX Vectra Rev counter input? 30 Jan 2006 (Forum)
When restarted the engine management light may stay on for a little bit before going out and engine runs fine. I am interested to see why the rev counter is acting the way it does which may help me isolate the fault. I plan to change the fuel filter as a first step as it probably needs doing anyways. -
Battery problem - 1999 Astra 14 Jan 2006 (Forum)
The first time I thought the battery was simply a bit flat after its time off the road. However each time I've driven it to work I've started it again in the car park to see if the run has helped it but the same problems occur. The accident was on the near-side front corner and I suppose it's possible the battery was damaged or somehow 'upset' during the accident but it seems like a long shot. -
Next Car Advice please 11 Dec 2005 (Forum)
new here so hello all :) 3 years ago i got fed up of driving new cars and bought a £1200 Volvo 850 2.5-20v. It didn't quite fit the image as I run my own business and the folks working for me all had cars 10x as much but it was an awesome car, eventually I gave in to the comments about it and bought a nearly new Skoda Superb....after 3 months I realise it's been a big mistake and I want to go back to the big old exec type of car. -
VW Polo 1.6 L 1995 21 Nov 2005 (Forum)
I've called a local company who claim to be able to replace keys for all types of vehicles, but have said they will need to run a full diagnostic check, and on top of a £100 call out fee the total bill is expected to be over £300, as the problem will not just be a faulty key. So, I called the local VW garage who advised that I could need just a new chip which will be approximately £18 or a new unit which will be approximately £70. -
Golf Mk3 Dead - Help!!!! 21 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Unfortunately this didn't cure the problem so they took it to a specialist who put it on two diagnosis machines both of which showed no power coming out of the ECU. After looking at several sites it appears that there is a long running problem with the ECU power supply relay. Ah Ha I thought replace that and Bob's your uncle! Nope - still dead. Does this mean I am looking at a new ECU? Or does somebody out there have any other ideas? -
The Rush Hour (and prevention thereof) 11 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Every day millions of people hit the roads at exactly the same time simply because convention dictates that we all work nine to five. Given that the school run is in full swing between 8 and 9 in the morning it seems crazy to try to get to work before then. Is it time we became a more flexible (even 24 hour) society? So, who here could or would do the following if their employer allowed it? -
Is my old Golf a write off?? 1 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Is there anything else that would cause it to miss on one cylinder while idling that might not require a load of work?? Maybe the oil breather or something? The thing is when I put my foot down a bit it runs lovely. What a attempt at swearing deleted . It's something I could never have known when I went to look at the car as it could have been the leads or something causing the probs, but now after getting the insurance and bits and pieces it doesn't look like it will be economical to put right. -
Fiat Ducato 1995-2002, any known issues? 30 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Now unfortunately I have had to develop an intimate knowledge of the innards of the Talbot and obviously the running mechanicals of the 'MK 2' Ducato are broadly similar but I have never owned a diesel vehicle and thus am likely to make an expensive mistake. The model I am after (Bessecarr E625) spans the changeover from the 2.5 TD engine to the early 2.8JTD version. -
USA tyre pressures same as UK? 21 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Many Thanks PS They have some really low octane fuel out here. 87 seems to considered a bit of a luxury-sebring is calibrated to run on this & has no sensors to retard for anything higher. & all the new car ads are shouting about cars that return over 30 mpg as something good. And they're all upset that fuel is now over $3 a gallon. -
The "French" fight back. 20 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Sierra 2 2 broken drive belts, 1 broken clutch cable, 1 broken brake vacuum pump. Sierra 3 1 faulty fuel gauge, causing me to run out of fuel. I only had this vehicle for about 2 months. I then moved to a different department, didn?t need a company car, and started buying my own(used) vehicles. I started with a BX16TRS, then a BX19GTI, then a BX19 16v.
