the identity conundrum 17 Aug 2010 (Forum)
He has a job, payslips, P60, student loan docs, security photo ID from his work, bank statements etc all of which are apparantly not acceptable to the jobsworths that seem to run our world. It is very frustrating trying to prove to some clerk, with the IQ of the ambient room temperture, that you are the very person stood before them. When the jobsworth was asked if he had any ID to prove who he was he could not produce any. -
Vauxhall Meriva - Radiator hose popped off 9 Aug 2010 (Forum)
Having topped it up the night before. Called breakdown recovery, he had a look and said, oh look, the hose at the back that runs from the radiator has popped off! I looked and saw the clip that holds it on, half way down the hose. It looked like it had never even been connected to the ( can't think of the name) when I looked at the hose it was was rusty where the clip had been, so i guess it had been like that quite some time. -
VW Passat 2.0 TDI - VW 2.0 TDI loss of power and EMS warning light 6 Aug 2010 (Forum)
Told them the story to which they said the diesel does not like "poddling around" and possibly the PDF had become blocked. As they were too busy to run a fault check until next week they said to give the car a good blast on a dual carriageway for at least 10 minutes and then bring it back for the fault check next week. Has anyone else had this type of problem and was "poddling around" the safari park in first gear likely to be the cause? -
VW polo - 1.4L CL - Jerky ride 4 Aug 2010 (Forum)
Is there anyway to cheaply sort out the problem, as personally I feel the car is at the end of its life. Hoping to move on to a new car, but I want this car running atleast for next 6 - 8 months. Thank you -
Sharan 2.0 2001 - Sharan Aircon problem 2 Aug 2010 (Forum)
Checked all the fuses which had an aircon sign against them and they were all ok. Tested the two gas filler points and gas hissed out. Have been running the car for the past 300 miles or so with the air con switched off. Ran the engine yesterday to warm it up to change the oil and got some burning smell from the left side of the engine (where the pumps/ drivebelt are. -
Toyota Previa 2.4i 16v 2001 - Toyota Previa No Spark from Coil 2 Aug 2010 (Forum)
Hi all I have a Toyota Previa II 2.4i 16v 1991 which was running very ragged after 15 mins (or when warmed up). I was advised to get hold of a new coil and No. 1 HT lead, which I duly did and also I added a new battery. I fitted the battery first and then found that I couldn't get the car to start at all. -
Discovery 3.9 1999.petrol. - Discovery 3.9 petrol engine boiling 1 Aug 2010 (Forum)
I was not convinced with the finish of the skim job but the company does it all the time for the local land rover agency so trusted them. could not see evidence of cracking of the heads anywhere, on replacement I replaced the streach bolts and torqued religously. There are bubbles through the header tank when topped up to the neck and the engine run, eventually it kicks the water out while idling, could the bubbles be residual air or is this a dead cert the head has gone again? 15 thou skin last time, i'm informed there is a ridge in the combustion chamber indicating limit for rework, but all I can see is a small flat area the size of an old sixpence but it seems too far to be the indicator in question, anyone know a dimensional limit? -
America - Pollution 28 Jul 2010 (Forum)
now I do sympathise with the spill & it should never of happened & if it did a contingency plan should of been in place BUT the American goverment approved the drilling in the first place & they still allow then to run around in 5-10 ltr 4x4's by the million. Fuel was still very cheap & whilst out there we used an SUV ( Chevey 4x4) and it was 40 dollars to fill up froma quarter!on average, so about £30.00 !! so cheap & they moan about cost of fuel! -
Land Rover Discovery - Rover 3.9 v8 engine 21 Jul 2010 (Forum)
What would e the absolute limit to face the head for the second time if required, or am I already there? has this been experienced before? 2. Would I expect after 5 minutes running and no overheat for the heads to be warped again as they were pulled down unevenly on the dowels in places and the block in others. 3. any good advice to go with the above gratefully received. -
Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 99 2.0 HDI engine warning light ,not revving 18 Jul 2010 (Forum)
The car ran for a week then suddenly the engine warning light came on whilst doing about 50mph and I couldnt rev the engine much above 2k but it kept running and I managed to get the car home. I left the car for a few days and when I started it again the light wasnt on and the car ran fine for about 20mins then the same again-wont rev over 2k. Ive had a look for loose/corroded connection but they look ok to me. -
Toyota Celica (2000 - 2007) - 03 1.8 Engine management light and VVT controller 19 Jun 2010 (Forum)
I usually notice it coming on when I'm driving at a steady speed, e.g. on the motorway or a long A road. The car runs fine. The only thing that might be affected is the fuel consumption which seems lower. I'm getting about 30mpg now. I've taken the car to two Toyota dealers who both retrieved a P code from the ECU that indicate a POSSIBLE problem with the VVT controller. -
Parus Major - the Great Tit 14 Jun 2010 (Forum)
It could have course have been bought in a shop in the 70`s and rounded off in one of those stone polishing machines. Remember the fad? Little motor driven tumbling machines, that you left running for days. I had one. Ever put malachite in with quartz and ended up with just quartz and a sort of green `soup`? You felt a Parus Major after doing that. -
Nissan X-Trail (2001 - 2007) - 03 2.5 Auto stalling problem 11 Jun 2010 (Forum)
It is a 2.5 SVE 2003 auto X-Trail. It has had a LPG gas conversion, but the problem happens whether running under petrol or gas. The car start OK in the morning OK but after 2-3 mins it cuts outs if you take your foot off the throttle. You loose the brakes and the steering is hard, so a bit risky. It can be a bit hard to restart. -
Swallows fly faster on the Cape UK route 3 Jun 2010 (Forum)
They seem feebler and slower when seen in the Philippines. Perhaps just hanging around locally with no need to go on the Cape run twice a year. How people must have longed for their freedom though. On the battlefields of history. Looking up and (with a nod to `Hillsides` in War And Peace) just longing to fly with them rather than a death as a pawn in a Generals chess set. -
Volkswagen Bora - Day 1 problems with a car. 1 Jun 2010 (Forum)
(this happened while driving) From this site i've learned it's called a limp home model(?) It's rather low on diesel at the moment and it had run out of diesel previously on a test drive. Could that be affecting it? I'm kind of stuck what to do and as I work evening shift didn't have a chance to report it to the garage today. -
Ford Focus - Foamy Dark Yellow Coolant 19 May 2010 (Forum)
I had a quick Google and am worried it might be the head gasket. The oil cap isn't emulsified on the underside, the oil is jet black. The car runs fine, the temperature gauge is dead centre, where it should be. About 2 months ago I topped up the coolant (all liquid at the time, no foam) with a different brand of coolant mixed with water. Has this problem happened to anyone out there - and if it is the head gasket, is it even worth considering getting it repaired - I'm guessing this is big bucks? -
peugeot 306 hdi 2.0l diesel 1999(v) - will not start 28 Apr 2010 (Forum)
Hi, After running so well my car just stopped and will now only turn over when switching the ignition. I have been to a dealer who did not want to know about repairing the vehicle and gave me a price more than I paid for the car to POSSIBLY get the vehicle going? -

Mazda 6 estate diesel 2006 - Mazda 6 not ticking over properly. 6 Apr 2010 (Forum)
I have recently bought a Mazda 6 and although I am overall pleased with the car and its performance, I am little concerned with a couple of slight problems. The main one being that when the engine has got up to running temperature and the car is ticking over it will 'miss a beat' and the revs will drop a fraction every 10 seconds or so, this stops when I press in the clutch. I have read on other posts that there is a common fault with the fuel pump on the Mazda, but I have eliminated this due to it stopping when I press in the clutch (I may be wrong as I am no expert!)
