  • Moderation in all things 11 Aug 2007 (Forum)
On the basis that this is a very useful and informative site, run at no cost to us by HJ and moderated by well intentioned moderators, I think we can all cope with a few spelling and syntax corrections without getting steamed up about it. Anybody who doesn't like the site can go and post on www.chavsinsaxosandbasball hats.co.uk or any site that better suits their approach to life.
  • Cross-country Average Speed? 9 Aug 2007 (Forum)
The idea of managing a 60mph average (where non-motorway roads are involved) today seems optimistic, to say the least. What do other Backroomers think is a good average speed nowadays - for daytime non-motorway runs?
  • Toad immobiliser fitted to Porsche 924 8 Aug 2007 (Forum)
One key fob pendant stopped working some time ago. Having done some work on it with the battery off I couldn't start it, no fuel pump running. Having checked fuses and connections around the relays fuel pump kicked in, engine fired up. On trying to restart red l.e.d. on toad keeps flashing, no fuel pump and no cranking. Are these things easy to reset,I obviously can't drive to the Lucas centre that fitted it, or alternatively are they easy to remove?
  • Minnesota bridge. Roads soon sorted. 7 Aug 2007 (Forum)
The timing of traffic signals has also been changed, new turn lanes have been created and access roads have been closed, while more city buses are running and car pooling is being encouraged. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/6932882.stm I wonder how long this sort of action would take in Blighty ???
  • 1996 Honda Civic Won't Start 3 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Pulled in to the petrol station and filled up, when to start the car and it wouldn't fire up. It made all the right sounds apart from the fact that the engine would not start running. Has anyone had a similar problem or if anyone can shed some light in my problem I would be most greatful. Thank you in advance. Rich

  • Toyota carina oxygen sensor 22 Jul 2007 (Forum)
My dad's 1997 Carina E has just been diagnosed with a faulty oxygen sensor (second one within it's life) and has been quoted nearly £400 for the 30 minute job by the local Toyota dealer. It is currently running ok as it is. Does anybody know either of any reliable independent garage in the West Midlands that may be able to offer a better deal than that, is it a part that can be self fitted, or what the potential implications might be if he doesn't have the part changed.
  • 05 Mondeo - Rain ingress 30 Jun 2007 (Forum)
My 05 reg Mondeo suffers a leak after prolonged rain and after the car has stood for some time.I don't think its the screen although the water only drips off the passengers side sun visor securing screw.Could rain get into the channel which runs along the roof from front to back which is covered by a black strip presumably to make it watertight. How is this strip fastened to the roof and are there any holes into the roof space? Any advice would be welcome as the main dealers say seals are only covered by a one year warranty Many thanks.

Dear Forum, I have an Holden Astra 1998 1.8 GL, Auto, (1997 twin cam engine fitted). I have a couple of issues with cold running which I would like to solve. I wanted to start by obtaining the correct wiring diagrams for this model. As you can see its called a Holden, becaurse I'm in Australia, but don't think it's any different to the UK, or Euro models.
  • When is a fake not a fake? 20 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Seemingly accepted by the FIA and VSCC as being eligible for competition. We had a 1929 Bugatti Type 35 entered on our historic vehicle club run this year. It said Bugatti on the badges and the tax disc BUT a local expert was able to tell us, too late to refuse it, that it was built recently by an Argentine company ?Pursang?. I was able to lovingly recreate £50 notes I?
  • The best way to dispose of...... 15 Jun 2007 (Forum)
He was in the process of restoring it before jetting off for pastures new. I am lead to believe that it is in pieces rather then complete and running, although the engine and gearbox are runners and the panels are all done!!!! The FIL and I are going to have a look at it in a couple of weeks time, but I am really after ideas of how to dispose of it.

  • Smokey 1997 406 1.9td 14 Mar 2007 (Forum)
I have owned the car for two and a half years now, but in the last few months it has become quite smokey. The car uses no oil and runs fine so it cant be a worn out engine. (engine has covered 150k) and no lights have come up on the dash to say there is a problem with the injector pump. The cars MOT is due soon and it wont pass like it so if anyone has any idears as to why its doing it i would be most greatful.
  • Getting an MOT done early. 7 Feb 2007 (Forum)
hi i have a renault clio whose exhaust is making a lot of noise so i have booked it in for an early MOT on thursday. i have just realised that i am getting it done on the 8th February and it doesnt run out until 8th March. does this count as a month or is it one day over a month? i wanted to get the exhaust fixed but didnt want to pay out for it if the car wasnt worth the MOT but am now extremely confused about the dates of MOT's and dont want to lose a month on MOT for the sake of one day!!
  • idling to warm up in cold weather 24 Dec 2006 (Forum)
I have heard contradictory anecdotes - and I'm sure that I read that for a diesel engine in particular it is not good to leave idling for too long but better to run at 'normal' revs from start. I'm not talking about hours anyway, probably about 5 mins max. BTW as I understand it, it is not legal to do this if the car is left on a public highway but presumably you're ok on the drive.
  • some Qs about HID lights 1 Dec 2006 (Forum)
I am currently running a Renault fitted with HID type Xenon lights for dipped beam which I find great and cause no apparent annoyance to other road users. Some general questions about this sort of lighting of which I know little.
  • VW Polo 03 reg 1.2 13 Nov 2006 (Forum)
Car has done 14,500 miles and it up for offers around £3,500. The only query is it was registered on 1 March 03, but it's MOT runs until August 2007. The person selling is ill so I can only assume the MOT date was missed. Car has FSH (including brakes service), clean HPI and full AA inspection. Anything in particular to look for.

  • Parking meter warning 20 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Checking other meters in the town it seems most of them are set 5 minutes fast. Anyone aiming to return by the (wrong) expiry time on the ticket therefore runs the risk of an excess charge if they time their return by their own watch. Knowing how anti-car this Local Authority is, I suspect this is a deliberate policy. Has anyone else come across this issue?
