  My early Mini had a gearlever that dissapeared at about 45 degrees into the gearbox. Mini developed the knack of jumping out of third gear on the over-run. Solution - a plate with a hook attached to the heater housing that captured the gear lever when put into third. Pushbutton on the lever knob actuated a solenoid to release it. It worked very well.

  hi i nearly run out of deisel, went to the petrol station and put some in and on my way home a message came up anti polution fault the power went but came back really quickly and now i have a yellow light on dashboard i think its the engine light sorry dont know much about cars as i am a woman can you advise me before i take it to the garage

  I mentioned the problem at the last service but they couldn't find anything wrong. It is okay when it is run from cold but stalls after it has warmed up. Could anybody tell me what is the likey cause and what is the cheapest to try first?

  hi all,,,i am thinking of buying a saab probably a turbo one,,maybe a diesel if i am convinced they a bit better than petrol one,,,but to be honest its only a weekend car i am after,,,so a petrol i reckon be better,so was wondering if they any good,,,a nice looking car though,,and i wont consider a bm or a4 as the whole town full of them,need to be a wee bit different,,,oh and alfas out of running too,,,,,,,thanks james.

  Just bought P reg Almera 80000 miles.Mainly short 10 mile runs aroun Glasgow so quite mild winters.Is Chevron supreme 10-40 mineral oil OK?If not;alternatives? Secondly;Denso K16PR-U (3191) plugs OK?Took out NGKRBKR6E but Eurocarparts said should be 5E equivalent for GA14 engine.Comments?

  My son owns a 99 vreg Astra 1.7Td ( Vauxhall engine ) and it is really bad to start 10-15 secs on key,hot or cold,but once started it runs drives perfect.It has done only 75000mls with FSH.It has recently fitted glow plugs.Have noticed it blows alot of black smoke when it starts,but it clears after that.There is no engine management lit.Any ideas Guys ?

  My problem is that when the heater is on, the only vents that blow out hot air are the rear ones!! That obviously shows the heater matrix is working and that the car is arriving at the correct running temperature at some point. If using the demister or opening the front vents or actually the heater anywhere in the front, I turn into an ice cube very quickly! Any thoughts? Thanks Simon slt

  Before taking BiL's car down the dealer, any views on my theory. The car still runs on its original pair of keys (nearly seven years old now). Would the age of the key battery (both OE) potentially cause immobiliser failure to engage. The keys are designed to re-charge as the car is driven.

  I would envisage engines with: no turbos, no complex fuel injection systems (such as in CR diesels), no timing belts, which are happy to run on basic grades of fuel, which do not use much oil between services, which don't have any major reliability problems or faults, and which are easy for mechanics to work on. (And perhaps there are one or two other qualities that I have not thought of.)

  Unlikely I'm thinking, so how quickly can a battery charge? I realise an alternator has to be capable of running the lights, heated rear window, wipers and everything else plus charge the battery. How much charge can an alternator produce and how dependant is it on engine speed? Anyone know?

  Hope someone out there can help a couple of days ago my ribbed belt shredded and a bit got caught under the timing belt and made the belt jump a tooth or 2, i believe that the car car is now running advanced i have a new timing belt etc but i can't seem to see the marks so that i can reset the timing position does anyone have an idea how i beleive the 1.9 diesel is also used in the Renualt Kangoo, espace, laguana and megane

  The roofbox is obviously limited by the (usually) 75kgs roof mounting weight of most cars and the trailer can be used for runs to the tip etc... I would imagine the trailer would be better for fuel economy trailing in the wake of the car though obviously you are then limited by speed.

  have a 1999 Nissan Terrano 2 2.7 turbo diesel with an unusual problem - lately I have had trouble starting it when its hot, sometimes it wont start at all - leave it 20 mins or so and eventually it will fire up. starts normally from cold in a morning and once started it runs perfectly. just wondered if anyone had experienced anything similar or has any idea of what could be wrong.   I have elsawin 3.30 but i am having big problems using it. Almost every page get me an error "internet explorer scripts". I run it on windows 2000 ....updated...but i don't think system is the problem. I already tried to re-install it but always the same errors. For example: if i go to electrical data not a single page is working, always the same error.

  Hi I am looking at buying a bmw 325ise. Its a 1992 plate. There is a sqeal coming from the water pump. There temperature is running ok at the moment but i am sure it wont get any better. Is it a big job changing this. Dont know much about bmw. Cheers. If Someone is good with these engines can they tell me roughly what needs to be done to change this as I prefer DIY than steep garage bills.

  Secondly, all the road tests say the diesel Fusions tend to be rattly, as though the soundproofing isn't as good as it could be. Again, that's tiresome on long runs. Any feedback appreciated!

  How does a novice go about scoping the dwell on his coil packs? I need to calculate both the running and cranking dwell for my car to properly configure the ECU. My friend has a bosch diagnostics terminal (smallish hand held green box of tricks that plugs into most cars about the size of a closed newspaper), this has a scope function and has 2 leads that plug in for the 'multimeter' functions it does.
