1997 2.1TD Starting clatter. - cholin
On starting first thing the past few extra cold mornings my car makes the most appalling and fearful clatter which very soon passes off and doesn't appear again until the next cold start. I'm used to the usual horrible diesel starting up racket but I can't remember it ever being so obtrusive. Is this just a feature of the extra cold or is it trying to tell me something? Otherwise cars starts well and runs well.
Thanks in advance for any enlightenment. Cheers.

Are all the glowplugs working? These stay on for up to 3 minutes after starting to assist combustion.

The other option is to get the codes read to check if the timing advance solenoid and the engine temp sensor are working correctly.

Usually caused by the timing which is advanced when cold to aid starting;timing comes back to standard either by temperature signal or by increased fuel pressure depending on type of pump fitted.

Thank you both advice noted and being digested.
